There was a topic on here the other day about USB ports losing power or something. I've lost it now. Anyway, that's not what actually made me think of this topic. What made me think of this topic was the fact that I just cleaned out my fan filters and did a spot of tidying up my cables to make way for my new CPU cooler (CM Hyper 212 Plus).
I never gave it a thought at the time and don't really know what I did, but my two USB ports on the top of my case which have never worked ever since building the computer have suddenly started working, but I've gotten so used to not using them that they're still not being used. I just found out that they were working when I tested everything after plugging all my cables back in.
So that made me think:
I can remember back in 2004-ish, back when botherboards mostly came with 2 or 4 USB ports on the back panel, and how cases only had two USBs on the front. Cases nowadays still only seem to have 2 USBs on the front most of the time, but a motherboard's back panel seems to now be covered in nothing but USBs, except for the network and audio ports. Some motherboards have 8 or perhaps 10 USBs on the back. Are there any boards with 10 USBs on the back? But they also seem to include far more USB headers than the case can cope with, some allowing up to 6 USBs by headers.
So how many USBs do you have? Do you use them all? Are you constantly having to swap things over because you haven't got enough? Are you using all the USB headers available mid-board? What devices have you got that use USB? Are you the sort to leave everything plugged in to it's own dedicated USB port?
Me: I have 6 USBs on the back panel and now 2 working USBs on my case's top panel. 2 USB headers are currently not in use mid-board because my case doesn't have any more USB ports.
I tend to leave everything plugged in to its own USB port and never really unplug anything, but I'm still not using all my USBs and after getting those two working on my top panel, I'm not using them. In fact, I'm only using 4 of the 6 on the back panel. I think I've gotten used to being too conscious of running out of USBs after my first build that I'm now too cautious with them and end up not using the ones I have. Both my mouse and keyboard are USB, but I have them both connected to PS/2 adaptors so I can use those ports instead, so as to not waste USBs.
I have an all-in-one printer which is constantly connected via USB, as well as a USB extension cable and a mini-USB extension cable for connecting various devices. And saying that has just made me wonder what the other thing is connected to the fourth USB port. Will have to look into that tomorrow when I'm more awake. It's probably just another USB extension cable on its own!
