View Full Version : Folding? who does it?
Came across this
http://folding.stanford.edu
wondered if any of you guys do it?
i had a read throu and well dont really make much sence to me but i got it runnning anyway :) hope its helping as my computer is on 24/7 keeps it busy :)

I used to do it but had to stop as it really does take the toll on the electric bill. Might get it cracking on the PS3 though as I suspect its a lot more energy efficient than having the GTX260 stressed for hours at a time.
I used to do the SETI thing to analyse the radio signals received from space, same concept I think
Yeah, I started on SETI years ago, then did folding for a few years. Stopped folding properly a couple of years ago though, as the electricity bill was going through the roof... :(
Yeah same here used to, got bored of thrashing my gfx card all the time so stopped.
i do it off and on, i started on seti on then moved over to f@h
i dont do it atm tho as the new gpu core crashes on my gpu, it just freezes it and the cpu client keeps working so who knows :(
aria have a team if you want to fold for us, if you search im sure you will find the threads all about it :)
seti moved to the BOINC platform a while back now, making it very possible for lots of once unconsidered projects to use distributed computing. I've a number of credits on many BOINC projects and a fair amount of Folding@Home points.
The bit that get's me now a touch is how much effort my points were and it's now doable on a single GPU :D
Many major advances have been made, in both the platform and the projects.

I used to, had 6x gtx295s and managed 115k from my systems. Electricery bill was horrendous sold I sold the lot lol
Andy
I used to use original SETI, and carried on using it for a bit when it went to BOINC, but I'm pretty sure thats when I decided to move over to F@H. I wanted to get to over half a million points, and then decided to call it a day from then on, due to cost. But I think I've given it the odd little boost every now and then since then!
I do it, and also have it running on 30 or so workstations around Oxfordshire.
Does Aria have a folding team? If so, what's our number?

I queried about the Aria folding team.
There isn't one.
If I did fold I'd fold for team #7 - overclock.net
Me, Mr. Strawberry and RawZ are all members over there.
If I won an nVidia GPU with decent PPD then I'd fold but with an E5300 and HD 5770 there isn't much point.
We have a team which is 133107
I used to BOINC, but as others, its all electricity for something i'll never get see.
I also fold for aria :)
here (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=133107)
What..dt not making a tpr plug ;) that said can,t remember the team number myself now ..315 or 317 not going to look it up not done it for at least year and a half.
what? me?
I'd never ever consider pimping to this thread with a full guide on how to install ....
http://forums.teamphoenixrising.net/showthread.php?t=27209
and that would include the setting of the team id to 315 :D
DT.
I fold occasionally for CustomPC/Bit-Tech F@H - 35947. As everyone says, it is a massive toll on electricity, but it is going towards genuinely useful research. I'm a physicist and I think SETI is a waste of time, F@H is much more valuable.
I started folding here at Aria, but with no-one to compete with it was boring (For all who want to argue with me and tell me its not a competition, who cares, its to a good cause)
and the elec bill lol

I fold here, anywhere from 6-24hr/day depends on what im up to and if im gaming or not. Folding around 700-1200PPD and hope to get that up to about 2000-4000 once the GPU3 client is released. ]
I will take you Mr. Lime... i will take you, slowly and surely.

your a good 4000 points behind pullen, a good 13000 points behind me and a good 31000 behind simon
how is that not good competition? :L
i didnt see those when i started :O
Hahahahaha well get on it man lol
Folding = expensive = No money!

folding = fun!!!!!!!
Not much fun seeing the leccy bill

thats probs cause i dont pay the leccy bill :L
If anyone wants to contribute to my old team, then feel free... Team 11899 :) We used to be in the top 25, but everyone dropped out due to cost :( :(
Thats Team:

I fold, but for another team, I may join here.
Also, I personally see SETI pointless, I mean F@H has a realistic goal, SETI on the other-hand, does not.
I run this kind of thing on several computers. Have done for years. Why not?

Oh, look at that, Phoenix Rising top of the pile :D With some extra help, we could take total credit back from Planet3D, they have nearly 5times more 'crunchers' than PhoenixRising and yet we still puch them :D With a few new members ......

Don't do Folding..... I'm a Docker now... used to be an Alien Hunter.
Been with Team Phoenix Rising now for 7 years...... A small but devoted gang of enthusiasts. Suprised DT hasn't done a little more pimping... we could always use a few extra members in our crusade for global domination in Docking!!!!
At one point I had a farm of 15 crunchers..... now down to 3 (2 quads and a dual)
Is crunching a waste of electricity? Not if it helps in scientific or medical research.

hmmmmm so its along the same lines as folding?
when the weather cools down enough for me to consider starting up full time on my rig again, ill have a looksy lol
my room gets too hot with my cpu at 100% and my graphics card at a similar high percentage
yes BOINC runs on the same principles, known as Distributed Computing. Folding@Home is one project, with the BOINC platform you can run many projects, and because there is a framework for use, there are many many projects taking advantage of it.

So i have just started up ma folding again due to freezingness :)
so who still folds? :)
I would but GPU3 client was just for Fermi cards and not to improve ATI as promised. Once they bother with AMD then I shall start it again.

lol i tried having a look for gpu3 but couldnt find mention of it on the fah site

If you have a capable CPU running the SMP client gives you bonus points after you complete 10 SMP WU's.

computer heater FTW :D
i might start when it's really freezing, and when i get gtx580. i've got economic-7, so folding from 1am to 8am are pretty cheap, and should give more heat than the storage heater i've got.
stupid storage heaters stores the heat for daytime, when no one's home. and there's no way to tweak how it stores/releases heat.

i know but i could never get smp to work
it went slower than a normal cpu client on mine
I currently crunch on WCG.. with.. milkyway@home for my GPU..
So what's this docking@Home jobbie then??

So what do you get for folding apart from the satisfaction of helping others...?

It's more than likely it wasn't set up correctly, i was in the same position and it took around 5 different installs to get it working :D

several guides in fact

warmth to your room, and warmth to your heart.
CPU SMP client has got a LOT better, install the command line version and follow the instruction on where/how to install and it just keeps going. Team 315 (http://www.teamphoenixrising.net/forumdisplay.php?f=65) is where it's at :D

Folding@Home (http://www.teamphoenixrising.net/forumdisplay.php?f=66) is a similiar project in terms of research, well it's science about biology stuff, "Phoenix Rising" is the team for that one :chuckle:

Which can be spent on nout?
I know there are leaderboards and that, but from what I can tell it can stress out systems for no real benefit to the actual owner

Your under estimate the draw of e-peen.
On the other hand, i guess its a productive stability test :)
for me its all about the heat :L

If you consider lending CPU cycles to a global effort to find cures for diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers to be a waste of time, then yeah, no real benefit.
....
I'm surprised there's no ARIA group or team????

Come and join Team Hexus instead :D
ill be submitting some wus to team aria soon :)
Yup, used to but like many others have said, leccy bill and all that - so I gave up. Custom PC mag devote 2 pages to it every issue of people who have built dedicated rigs for it.
Not me, never heard of it before!

i used to for a little bit, then realised ati cards suck :D
i will be back when ati can match nvidia, or atleast have a fraction of the production.

I'm running the CUDA folding client on my nvidia GPU (Folding@Home GPU Core Version 1.31) 704 work units completed in total. http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Delta_Whiskey
Don't fold anymore as I switched over to using BOINC a few years ago.
Guys at the folding forum were so anal and using BOINC platform simpler and gives more project choice.
Currently 40th in the BOINC world :D....but need to scale back....running costs, ouch
Will hopefully reach the billion mark first though :)

Nope. I haven't seen anything in the news or folding community that indicates the millions (maybe billions?) of pounds of hardware and electricity has actually warranted it's cost.
What I have seen however is boat loads of epeening, number boasting and rank infatuation. To me the whole thing has been convoluted into just another competition run by hardware geeks.
Try researching some other projects then.
Oh and.....science...takes....time.
It's not for today or tomorrow, it's for generations to come.
Beats the hell out of game benching!!!
I fold a fair bit. About to increase performance as i noe have gtx460's which will shortly be sli'd and coupled with an i5 or i7.
Also fold through my ps3.
