Hi all, ive grown sick of this ****ty bt homehub that my mum and dad have been given when they signed up for btbroadband and ive finally decided to switch it for my old Netgear DG834G

Main reasons for wanting to swap it is because the BT homehub 2.0 is a pile of ****
Opening ports on a BT homehub is useless, therefore not allowing me to host a game on COD 4 for example
Transferring files on this homehub is terrible, things like streaming films from one pc to another is rubbish, but i used to do it on my netgear without a problem

Among other things i really want to swap it

Now, as some of you may know i used to work for BT and i already know that you only need to enter "whatever@btbroadband.com" as the username and leave the password field blank.

But this doesnt seem to be working, the netgear has a DSL connection but isnt authenticating.

Any ideas what other stuff i need to check, is its PPoE or PPoA that Bt use? Things like that

Much appreciated people, and thanks in advance

BT use PPoA as far as I'm aware.

Multiplexing = vc Based
VPI = 0
VCI = 38 <- that's the one that on default Netgear routers is different

wizard is correct, PPoA (PPP over ATM)

I also sold my BT HomeHub2.0 for similiar reasons :(

I'd love to get rid of the Homehub in my house, but its my housemate's, who also has the internet in his name, so I'd feel a bit bad about chucking it out! :lol: It really is a dire piece of kit tho!

Who would have guessed the Netgear DG834G was so good as it's the one Sky gives you.

I am guessing that, since you left BT, having the password became a requirement; or possibly always was for people not using the HomeHub (agreed, it is $hite!!)

PPOA = ADSL
PPOE = Ethernet/Cable

Cheers for the help guys. Not tried swapping it again since starting this thread :P

The worst thing about the homehub2 is it just randomly loses settings all the time. For no reason it will just drop any random settings. (Mainly port settings)

And another thing is, you can only open ports for one device at a time! What the **** is wrong with that??? :P On the netgear, you just open the ports, not just for one device. Stupid router... :)

:surprised:

EDIT: I would click the thankyou button but it doesnt seem to appear on this topic

The thanks button only stays open for a few days, after that it's gone... don't think there are any restrictions on rep though.

Oh and nice sig BTW... Bill Hicks.. probably the greatest comedian ever, and gone way before his time.

I used to do stand up comedy myself... and Bill Hicks was one of the comedians who inspired me.. and it's a very, very short list.

Yep, Sky picked a winner in the Netgear compared to some of the other shonky donkeys the rest of them pedal. That said Sky kit is usually pretty reliable, never had much trouble other than the occasional reset with the Digiboxes, even ones made by Amstrad

Iv never heard of not using a password!!! that's the only thing i could say was the problem as everything else should run at default and yes it should be PPoA
Although netgear are good there has only ever been one router iv never had any issues with regarding ports setting and the dreaded drop outs and that surprisingly enough is the Thomson SpeedTouch 585
yes its an old one and quite ugly and cheap looking but its one of the very few that actually run flawlessly
