Waiting for the 5850 to drop to a more reasonable price at the moment, although bearing in mind the weak competition from Nvidia, this might be a long wait :(

Just wondering from people's past experience, how fast does GFX tend to drop in price. A friend of mine told me GFX tends to halve in price in 12 months.

Any truth in this?

Seems to remember the initial launch price of 4850 was £200 and 4870 was £300 in July 2008. By July 2009, they were £120 and £170.

They won't drop..
Not for a while...

If this year followed last year, they'd be 150 pound for a 1GB 5870 by now.

I read that board partners for ATi are waiting to see how many Fermi cards are available before dropping the price.

Even then its only gonna be slightly.

The only real price drop will come to make way for the 5 series refresh as when the 4890 arrived last year.

Quite a while. Sales are good, supply is tight and Nvidia have little competition.

If you want something that is dropping in price look for 2nd hand 48xx series :)

I have to agree with the others, I don't see them dropping much at all in the next few months unless Nvidia get really competitive with prices... which I doubt they can afford to do.

if you're looking for really good value for money get 2/3 second hand 4850s, £40-50 each, bargain!

The other issue is the weak £, even when prices drop they might not costing less £'s, but less $.

The days of 2 USD per 1 £ are over for now.

I think we are lucky that things are not going up in price due to the Yen/£ exchange rates.

My GFX buying tip: Don't spend much more than £150 as its the £/performance ratio point. Anything over £150 is a really great card but it loses value quicker.

it depends how competative the market is, right now ati has the best price/performance so they dont need to touch their price untill nvidia drop theirs, which tbh i cant see happening till the end of the year now.

but when they are evenly matched in performance they do tend to drop in price much faster than they have of late.

there's a GTX460 coming up in the pipeline, that may cause 5850 to drop in price.

I think many of us are waiting for the price drop to happen... the problem is when it does we hear about the "next GFX" rumor...
