This is amazing, I barely use Photoshop, but with this even I might be able to do useful stuff !

Minimum specifications to run content aware:
2x Core i7 980X with a minimum of 8GHz.
256GB of DDR3 RAM.
200TB Solid State Drive.
If you have that system then it's a great system!

Sounds a rather unbelieveable recommended spec...
Hopefully it will run on a mere 4 core i7 instead..
This looks great, as a graphic designer and photo editor, this is something that I'd find really useful. Are those actually the recommended specs? :knock:
Umar
is this a hoax?
WOW just wow
Those specs suggest a hoax, but where did you get those specs from? It's a bit early for April Fools though...
the end result could be a simple undo to restore the picture.
If thats real, that is a truely amazing tool...!
i've looked around for a hoax story on it but can't find one, only forums thinking its a hoax!
I don't believe it, that can't be true ........ can it ?
Thinking about it, if someone showed me Google street view a few years ago I would have said it was a fake, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is real

The specs were a joke guys ;)
Is 256GB of RAM even possible right now, plus you cannot have 2x 980Xs anyway since only Xeons will do two on one board since they have TwinQPI I believe.
I actually read that as 256 MB of RAM, but I suppose in DDR3 that doesn't exist either!
The specs were just made up, the content aware fill is not a joke.
Saw this video yesterday.
the video could be made up!
My money's on an April fool.
It was believable until the desert and panorama images.

Not fake: http://cs5launch.adobe.com/?PID=3387991
It's on the official adobe CS5 launch site.
I remember when I was studying Interactive Media. When writing essays we were always told to never use Wikipedia for information, but that it is a very good way of finding information because everything is linked and referenced.
If you look up Creative Suite 5 on Wikipediaand click the reference number near the bit about content-aware fill, the reference is just a link to that Youtube video! So the video must be real because Wiki said so. :p
I just had a chance to play with Photoshop CS5, and the Content Aware fill really is very good.. In the video, they have definitely picked the right photo to use it on and in real life, it doesnt doesnt work quite as well in every single situation, but it still is something to be very impressed with!
i read the content aware filter is available in GIMP as resynthesisor for ages......

That looks equally impressive - I'd like to see a demo on a more complex image and see how it gets on! I've not really ever liked GIMP very much, but I havent used it for years and seeing how its come on makes me want to try it again!
I've been using PhotoShop since version 1.0, no really I have, and professionally too.
It's amazing how far PhotoShop has come, before you needed to be college trained to use it (well, you still do that hasn't changed) but the tools are amazing for photo retouching vs what we had in 2, 3 and on...
Now clients just get pickier... haha.
Just to show - this was literally 2 mins work. I tried to find a relatively complicated image for this sort of thing. Just drew over the areas, and this was the result. The picture is of a Sentry Box to an old WWII Airfield very near me (anyone who is into Band of Brothers may recognise the names of the area).

That's amazing. I could retouch that myself (My main career is as a graphic artist), but it would take me (and I'm quick) about 3 hours to do that for print.
The question is how is the quality of the retouch? Good enough for web or print?
I'd probably say that doing it as a 2 minute job, probably good enough for web only. You'd notice it in print I think. However, I reckon an extra 30mins work and you could have it up to print standards. The only thing that I think you would notice if it was printed is the odd slight join where a texture hasnt repeated quite naturally. It would just be a case of touching those up and you'd be good to go.
I'll post a couple of others later if I get a chance. I'll try and do a couple of cropped sections at full res so you can see what I mean. It'll definitely massively reduce the time that a job takes though.

post the same pic but remove the sentry box, and flag :knock::knock::knock:
post the same pic but remove the sentry box, and flag :knock::knock::knock:Well, its not brilliant, but it'd definitely give you a very good starting point to completely removing it.. I think it got a bit confused by the tree, but I guess that was quite a difficult bit as the flagpol actually completely covered most of the edge! Also, where the sentry box was has come out a bit darker, but that would be very easy to fix with other photoshop tools. This was purely using the Spot Healing Brush...

Ok, I did this one in blocks rather than just one massive splodge area.. It did better than I thought it would! I still wasnt precise or careful in the slightest though! I think it would actually do quite well if you spent some proper time learning how the tool works and where it looks for the content to fill with.. Combine that with the clone tool etc and you could get some good results!
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w19/adunne_2007/sentrybox5.jpg
Amazing really, I thought it was a joke when I saw the original video
Saw this last month.
HAVE TO GET THIS AT ARIA - SAVES ME A JOB AND A HALF! :D

that is spot on!!
i guess if you do a large area it replicates too much "usa flag syndrome" but in blocks, well that is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry impressive! :clap:clap
Yeah, I think the bigger the area you select, the further away it looks to try and match content.. IE - if I selected a 100px square, it may only look at the 50px surrounding it on all sides. However, if I selected a 400px square, it may look around it on all sides for 300px or something. If you are doing a large area and pick the point you start with carefully, it should give some good results for the whole thing. Also, creating a bit more area for it to look at using the clone tool seems to work magic with this tool as well.
With regards to the demo in the video they definitely cherry picked that image to give best results. If you look at how it is made up, in the large areas they choose to edit, it is all huge areas of plain colour with constant textures (grass) and/or very even gradients (sky). The 'complicated' bit, where they do something to the trees is a very small edit.
Having said all that - I'm impressed!
most impressive.

I thought I'd give this one a go with GIMP and Resynthesizer plugin, granted it takes slightly longer than CS5, but the result is pretty much the same:

That is really amazing stuff. Hopefully it won't put us Graphic Artists out of jobs (you know the ones that actually went to school to learn to use Photoshop).
is this an update to current photoshop as an addin? or do you have to buy the whole new suite?
I have a go at using the GIMP software last night and went through a few of my photos and removed one of my mates from them.
Worked quite well really for free software.
Jumpin! Adobe wants almost a 1000 pounts for CS5...ouch.
Yeah - its not cheap at all. When it comes to the point of me buying something, I'm going to give GIMP a serious look again..
dreamweaver is making it rly easy to make web sites guna put me out of a job!
You just have to learn how to do things that dreamweaver can't. And also, I dont think you should be too worried. There will still be lots of people who would rather fork out £1k for a ready built website, rather than spend £1k just on a program and then have to build the lot themselves :)

or PM Tystar
good point on the other point is i am really a coder not a designer two different things this package which i will be getting will help me vastly improve my own design abilities. Been both a good designer and coder would be luvly!
btw gz me just passed my ccna today :) ccnp next... in a few years.
or PM Tystar
Well, yes there is the 'underground' option too ;)

You would be surprised. I can tell you that people will do this instead. They will not fork out £1k to build a site nor will they buy £1k of software, they will make "do" with whatever they have, built it with that and save the £1k.
That is what has been happening in the graphics industry for 15 years now. Yes, there are amazing professional graphic designers out there, but people have gotten use to "bad and lazy design" made by non-graphic designers.
You can thank Photoshop for a part of that. (ie, Photoshop made it "easier" to "design" for the unskilled)
Heck, you don't even need to be a Systems Builder anymore to build your own PC like in the past.

I had a go with the Beta and on my i7 @ 4Ghz its damned impressive -
Photo with too many ducks
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg318/unreel2002/S5000759.jpg
and the edited version with a few less ducks
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg318/unreel2002/S5000759duckremovals.jpg (http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg318/unreel2002/S5000759.jpg)
The edit was simply a matter of lasooing the ducks and selecting delete with content aware each duck took about 1.5 seconds to delete so around 6 seconds edit time.. not bad for a beta !
Looks like one of the ducks sank
Impressive though, isnt it? Very very quick!

Another go -
Lots of lamposts on this shot
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg318/unreel2002/RIMG0321.jpg
and with lamposts and bollards removed - again each removal takes around 1-2 seconds this time using the Spot heal brush
(with content aware enabled)

Thats worked really well..

i can still see the camera pole left a dark mark there.
@unreel2002
Try doing the same thing but with the Content Aware tool?
so theres a content aware tool and a heal brush? what is supposed to be the difference in them?
Impressive work anyhow unreel LOL :knock:
"Content Aware" isnt really a 'tool' as such.. its the way photoshop gathers information to use the tool that you select. So on the Heal tool you have the following options
Texture create
Proximity Match
Content Aware
The 3 options (or variations of) appear within the options for different tools, not just the heal tool. There will be different results using each of them. I just used the Content aware option on the heal tool as that's what was being discussed here.

For small thin items it works ok though...

I can fix it manually, but it just shows that content aware isn't going to fix everything. :)
The area it's trying to fix is quite complicated though, if you look at the path, that is fixed fine, it just doesn't know what to do with the huts.
