View Full Version : PC Graphics equivalent of PS3?
Hi, after my purchase this week of a 5870, the price of which made me think a little of the cost of the card compared to a PS3 for example.
Which graphics card is on a par with the PS3?
I am replacing my 4870 with the 5870, any thoughts on this upgrade or is 2 x 4870's a better option (on my MSI GD80 P55 board)

It's difficult to compare. The PS3 uses a 7800GT IIRC, but games will always look smooth as. Why you ask? Every PS3 user has the same GPU so games can be optimized for the GPU. With PC they can't because everyone has different GPU's!
4870 to 4870 would be a really big boost, considerin the 5770 is on par with the 4870.

Although not the PS3, i believe the X19xx from ATi was on par and mostly better than whats in the Xbox 360 so considering how close the two consoles are i think that gives a pretty good picture.
The PS3 uses its own bespoke graphics chip called the Reality Synthesiser or something like that. However, it is developed by nVidia and as far as I know is based on the NV47 chip, which is the same as the 7800 range of nVidia GPUs. :)
Double post, I know.. But I just looked up the info as I wasn't 100% sure I was actually correct  Here's the link :)

I'm starting to think Aaron is a giggly girl with the constant use of ->
:D
Some games like killzone 2 and resistance are ran at 30fps. Same hardware and optimisations for said hardware as previously mentioned is what makes it work. + not having windows ;)

Killzone and Uncharted 2 look much better than anything my 7800GT ran. Main problem with PC gaming is how inefficiently our vastly superior hardware is always being used.

^^ what he said :)

I think the nail has been hit squarely on its head there!
I asked this as it may be more cost effective to buy a PS3 for gaming, but I am a serial pc tinkerer.
Cheers
Thing is with the ps3 while the gpu is poor (variant of a 7800gtx i think) a lot of the graphical work is levied onto the spu's. Also as a poster above said console games are optimised for the set gpu so they manage to get more 'juice' out of it
With that said, get a decent cpu, and something a bit better then a 7800gtx...say an 8800gt. Play a multiformat, eg devil may cry 3.. you'll be able to play it with full eye candy, AA, and and at 1080p..rather then having to make do with a 720p jag fest

The 8800GT is a great example of how PC Gaming has actually been fairly good value in recent years (if you can stop the upgraditis). You could have bought one over 2 years ago for less than half the then cost of a PS3. It still will play all the latest games at similar or better res to the PS3 and you saved near £200 towards the cost of the half decent dual core PC you need to plug it into :thumb:
I have a PS3 and an 8800GT... Now where's my soldering iron...
I agree though - the 8800GT was one of the best purchases I made. Bought it pretty much dead on 2 years ago and its still going strong, and I'm finding it hard to justify thinking about upgrading it!
Keep it for Physx if you can anyway.

doesn't the PS3 do 1080p?
doesn't the PS3 do 1080p?
It can, but for very few games. There's many things to blame, but the majority of games are 720p. Some games are even below 720p!

As mentioned very few games actually support 1080p, GT5P supports 1080p natively but drops its AA from x4 - x2 at this resolution compared too 720p. Whats annoying about the PS3 is that devs have to choose to enable upscaling of games also - seeing Killzone 2 stretched across a 42" screen isn't the best :(

ok, I was going to say the 8800Gt struggles a little at 1080p but if the PS3 does too than it hardly matters!
iirc the PS3 has a cut down version of the 7900gs, they gave it a new name so people didn't make direct comparisons to PCs since the console games are better coded for the hardware.
I have to say I hadn't played on a console for quite a while, and I have to be honest, they are pretty terrible, I'm not sure about PS3 but i have no idea why anyone would want to game on a 360:
terrible graphics (compared to PC),
awkward cotrols (just my opinion, no flame wars please :P)
can barely hear the game over the noise of the console,
in all not a very good experience
True I know the feeling, I play modern warfare 2 quite a lot on the pc, with everything turned up to the max - whenever i see someone playing the console version, it looks damn near awful

MW2 is native 1080p on consoles;)
A lot are less and then upscaled to 1080P. I don't want to really go into the whole Console VS PC argument but the only main difference is the lack of AA. But, for a £230 console that can play all the games I want smoothly at 1080p, it's a great choice!
it's not even smooth! i wouldn't mind so much if it were at least playable! This was on a 26" 'HD ready' TV so i'm guessing it was only 720p aswell!

Have you been smoking crack, its sub-HD on both. Unless ofc your being /sarc?
I disagree with a lot that's been said about the consoles because they are fine pieces of machinery most of the time they come off with the better version of multi-platform games and the exclusives they have are immense in addition to them not able to be subjected to cross comparison to know how much your missing out on.
Also, if your complaining about the sound of them [consoles] you can't be a real PC gamer anyway ;)

Bingo. PCs have more power and computing ability but you nailed it and it started with messy and sloppy programming in the early late 80's when we moved from 5.25" floppies to 3.5" floppies (then to CD's). It gave us more room to be messy with the code.
Don't even get me started about the 8.5" floppy disks I used to use and how amazing it was to own the first 720KB 3.5" floppy disc! (it was like a HDD)
Also, if your complaining about the sound of them [consoles] you can't be a real PC gamer anyway ;)
why is that? becuase I have a decent sized case with a TRUE I don't need Delta's to cool it :P

Exactly, but your fans should still be at 100% ^_^
they are.. but full is 800RPM :D
Most of the time you can't hear my PS3, PC or even 360 over the M&K/Onkyo surround sound in my house. When you can though, I find any high end PC graphics card with a standard issue cooler is as loud as either console when they are being pushed. PS3 is very quiet apart from the optical drive on occasion. 360 is quiet apart from optical drive (just install games to HDD). PC is fairly quiet until the reference Nvidia cooling on the GPU kicks in.
If you are a serious PC gamer, you'll have a quality headset or high-end surround speakers to help you game... and thus noise is a non-issue while in-game.
Either way, PC graphics are indeed miles ahead but considering the near-infinite permutations of hardware setups across the world, devs are forced into coding for compatibility as opposed to out-and-out performance. Besides, as was mentioned earlier, if you compare the output of the PC against either a PS3 or 360 in a title available on all 3 platforms, you'll always find details/quality of textures/antialiasing is far superior on the PC.
