Hey guys.

Can someone please recommend me an absolutely terrific router that would work great with a fast broadband connection. I would like a really high performance one so any good recommendations would suffice. Thanks in advance!

Anyone answering is on a hiding to nothing. But here goes.

I use a Netgear DGN2000.

I picked that one because I have had several Netgear modem/routers and they work fine. Reasonable price. Adequate support.

But that isn't the point. You need to say more about your system.

What do you mean "a fast broadband connection"?

This is outside the router's control.

What ISP? Some may be better than others with different modems.

One thing to beware is b*ll*cks advice from your ISP.

I have had problems with Pipex gpoing back over years. One tech "support" person said that Netgear had known problems with Pipex. Something to do with ADSL 2 negotiation.

I had never come across this. There was no external support for this view. And a later conversation with another person on the Pipex (Tall Talk/Tiscali/who's as the end of the line know?) support line said this was rubbish.

I'd say that most modem/routers will be the same.

The performance you see will be down to the ISP.

Look for the ease of use and for how the thing meets your other needs.

I have three PCs on a home network, with a laptop connected from time to time. I also have wifi in the house. Then there is the gigabyte switch attached to the router to get decent local transfer speeds. (Somehow, the modem/router makers have yet to make an affordable gigabyte box.)

So, to sum up, too little information. I'm no expert. Others can probably offer better answers if you tell them more about what you want.

I've had good luck with both draytek and netgear

Draytek! Best ever, but expensive - worth it, though.

I've currently got a Netgear DG834PN, which works pretty well with ADSL2+, but will be replacing it with the Netgear DGN3500 pretty soon (once it turns up :) ).

I'm using a Netgear DG834G. I've personally never had any trouble and would say it's very good, but because I'm the one who purchased it, then my brother has to find some excuse for WoW's performance being crap...

My "robot" told me that there has just been a firmware upgrade for some flavours of this modem.

You might want to check.

If you can get a decent one, the BT Business Hub (2-Wire 2700HGV) has amongst the best ADSL2+ performance you'll get anywhere - designed and supplied for business use, very stable. The wireless is only 'g' but security, firewall etc. are all top notch.
V6 are not 'locked' so are easy to use (google for set-up though).

I am using a Draytek router, can you not get a free one from your provider.

I have to agree. Different class of hardware.

I'm currently using a NETGEAR DGN2000, it's great and not a stupid price either.

I've never used Draytek before but I've heard good things about them, if your after a well priced, well performing router than the DGN2000 should be your number one choice.

Would be nice to have a link to an in-depth wireless ADSL router round up. I quite like the new features manufacturers have started to add (USB disk support, print server).

I'm stuck with this question now.

My Netgear DG834GT keeps losing LAN connection at least once a day. Wireless is fine but when I lose my LAN I have to power cycle the router.

Started off maybe once a month, then once a week & now every day :(

So I'm also interested in a good Wireless/LAN modem for a reasonable price.

Wireless Connections:

1 x laptop
1 x iPhone

Wired Connections:

1 x PS3
1 x WDTV Live Media Player
1 x Main PC (Gaming & media file server)

I've been looking at the Netgear items, such as:

D-Link DSL-2740 Wireless-N ADSL 2+ Router (300Mbps)
Not on Aria, but with another retailer & gets good reviews for about the same price as the Netgear DGN2000

Whilst the DGN3500 has nice features, the cost really puts me off tbh, so at the moment I'm really tossing up between the DGN2000 & the D-Link DSL-2740.

Any thoughts appreciated as I'd like to order one or the other today :D

There is also the DGND3300 which is dual band and is quite handy if you have g and n wireless equipment.

Only got g at the moment but might in the future but I'd rather have the gigabit ports that the dual band but the cost is too high for me really.

That's why I'm looking at either the Netgear DN2000 or the D-Link as above. The reviews on the D-link look good from what I've read, but I've been a Netgear user for about 8 years.

The DGN2000 doesn't have gigabit ethernet, only 100Mb/s.

If you want a good router with 1Gb ethernet then your best bet is to gather your pennies and get the DGN3500.

Fortunately, my current motherboards have dual LAN connections. So I can add a GB box to my router/modem.

This may apply to other people.

I can't understand why Netgear hasn't made all router/modem boxes gigabit.

They have sold GB switches for years.

I know the 2000 only has 100Mbit ports but I was comparing the cost of the dual band router and said I'd rather have 1gb ports than dual band as they are near enough the same price.

Plumped for the 2000 myself but bought it from a competitor as it's cheaper even though Aria had it on Super Special

I set my DGN3500 i got a week ago. Is soo easy to work with. Had it up and running within 5 minutes. :)

Quite impressed with it soo far. Seems to sync slightly higher than my DG834PN did, it has 4 different SSID's for different networks, and has a USB port to set some network storage. It even allows you to get up an ftp with the usb port, and gives you the address to connect to it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Has anyone had a try with this router by any chance? I'm tempted to buy it:

http://www.netgear.co.uk/home_wndr3700.php

Apparently it can give LAG-FREE gaming and HD streaming without any hiccups.

Toonshorty

It cannot give lag-free gaming. It's just marketing.

There are many things that create lag:

1) Actual broadband connection (some cable lines have 6ms ping while ADSL has about 26 to 70ms+)
2) Game host/dedicated server connection
3) How you connect to the router (WiFi, Ethernet or Powerline)

If your on a 50Mb cable connection I'm sure you'll get lag-free gaming.

Even with a 50mb connection you are going to get latency, the packets still have to reach the server in question and then get a response back again.

I never said it didn't have latency?

I said that the 50Mb connection can have around 6ms latency whereas ADSL has around 26 to 70+ ms.

I guess my wording wasn't too great though.

Another vote for the Netgear DGN2000 here.

The o2 Pro router is pretty gaff - wireless is so unreliable and signal quality constantly dropping repeatedly. Also got loads of retrains with the router resetting itself randomly. Upgraded to the DGN2000 a month later and not noticed a single dropped connection. Now and then I may see wireless signal drop to about 2 bars which makes browsing even Google a bit of a chore, but quick channel change always sorts it... My room sometimes plays havoc with wireless signals but again, I rarely have issues and when I do it's never the routers fault.

Really cannot say any bad things about it other than it doesnt have any 'holes' on the underneath in order to wall-mount it like you can with many others.

lag free to me means latency free ;)

personally use a netgear N, hardwired to my ps3 i rarely have a drop in performance on around a 2-3mb connection, also never drops out compared to my old D-Link  loadsss better, and hardly see any issues with them at my work :)

My vote would be a Thomson 585 v7 holds the line very well even on a poor line

Glad it's working well for you... But it honestly is a very rubbish router! o2 and sky (i believe) use them and if you google it you'll see there are lots of people with big problems with it. I used to use one and got several disconnections a day. Switched to my netgear and I've never seen it disconnect. You are one of the few who can truly say they are happy with that Thomson. Besides it's unrealiability, it lacks many options/settings/configurations people deem crucial to a wireless router.
