View Full Version : WPA is no-go with Netgear DG834G
Hi folks :)
I have four machines at home in total. Three desktops and one laptop. All connect to my DG834G v3 router just fine with wires, wireless is a different story however.
If I choose to use no security, I get no connection. If I choose WPA or WPA-2, I get no connection. If I choose WEP 128, I get a connection!
Which is just fine except I want WPA or better yet, WPA2. My router and WG511 card both support this, not so sure about the Linksys WMP55AG card upstairs though, although the configuration utility that comes with it says yes.
Why is it being such a git? I've lost hours and hours tearing my hair out over this, there's seemingly no logic to it :(
Any ideas anyone?
That's the thing - when selecting the WPA radio button, the 64/128 bit setting is ghosted out as the software knows you don't get a choice with WPA. Using 64 or 128 bit WEP is fine though :(
My neighbour has WPA2 set up on his network, I may have to go round and punch him in the face for being a smug git. :)
Keep those suggestions coming, in the meantime I'm going to check the firewall. Still, not sure why it would allow WEP and not WPA.
[quote:6572629479=\"ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ\"]Kk just logged in to mine, make sure you have both of these turned on:
Enable Wireless Access Point
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)
Set region to europe
Channel to 11
Mode to g&b
If thats still a no go try messing about with this:
Wireless Station Access List
Good luck m8 [/quote:6572629479]
Mine is:
Wireless Network
Name (SSID): Rage
Region: Europe
Channel: 6
Mode: g&b
Wireless Access Point
Enable Wireless Access Point: Yes
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID): Yes
Wireless Isolation: No
Wireless Station Access List
Security Options
Disable
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
WPA-802.1x
WPA2-802.1x
WPA-802.1x+WPA2-802.1x
WPA-PSK Security Encryption
Network Key (8 ~ 63 characters)
For the password I simply typed 1 to 0 and back again on the keyboard until I used all 63 characters up. I have used simple 8 character passwords too to no avail.
The MAC filtering is on and the Router allows the laptop to connect under it's MAC address - but only in WEP.
To be honest there's nothing wrong with WEP. The chances of getting a master hacker sitting outside your house with your laptop and enough time to want to get onto your network are rather small :)
I just use 64bit WEP, which is more than enough to stop people piggy backing off my wireless network.
I'm right by the City Centre so there are at least four others I've seen in range of me, one's my neighbour, one has an unprotected Linksys (fnarr) and there's a Sky broadband one that appears from time to time :)
I'm not the least protected one of the bunch, but I'm second from bottom! :D
I have since discovered that you need to download WPA2 as an add-on from Microsoft, which I have now done. Still doesn't work though.

In my area there are 8 wireless networks within range!!! I live in a big apartment block :)

*If* you can crack my WEP :)
don't need yours cos you said there are 8 others in range lol
In my case it's not really people outside in cars that bother me, it's the others who are permanently nearby. You never know if one day one of them might get curious, and, seeing as the guy with the Linksys offers no challenge, might move on to me.
My immediate neighbour works for Syan, so he probably knows his stuff. I however am a few years away from getting my IT&C degree so there's loads I don't know yet.
All you need to crack someone's wireless network is Linux, a packet sniffer and some time :)
Exactly, hence my reason for wanting to make them spend the maximum amount of time possible :)
I'm still having no luck with this, both my Netgear WG511v2 and the Linksys WMP55AG won't have none of it in WPA or WPA2 modes.
Has anyone got WPA working fine, and if you have, what wireless card are you using please?
Long time no update.
Well six months have passed and I got nowhere, until today that is. And only in theory. :)
Since my last post I have also acquired a WG111T USB wifi stick, which (suprise) also dosen't do WPA. But wait, what's this....

Seems my latest firmware which I've had a good while now, V4.01.28, has a bug with WPA.
I did have V4.01.20 which apparently does work with WPA, but a while after I upgraded I must have deleted it off the drive. :(
Unfortunately Netgear have also strangely removed it from their servers so I can't downgrade to it. Does anyone have a spare copy of V4.01.20 for the DG834Gv3 laying about?
I need to check which version I have, but I do have a DG834Gv? I've only had it 5months, and now developed a problem. I thought I had WPA... but now you've put doubt in my mind. The problem I have is that I can wirelessly connect to it, but get no internet. It worked at 3pm on Sunday, but not at 5pm!!! I've tried two devices, both connect but no internet. I've even tried to hardwire connect, but the http://192.168.0.1 login fails - and doesn't even give a chance to log in to check/change settings!
I've turned off and on, all lights are correctly showing. I haven't tried a hard reset becuase I didn't want to lose the settings that obviously work (wirelessly at least). However I think I may have to...
Any other ideas? I've changed the asdl filter too.
wep can be cracked in 5mins
Who would actually care about cracking some wep key really?

About 70%
On a recent ethical hacker course - we tore down a WEP-128 network in about 7 mins. Then we found they were using MAC authentication. This took about another 30 seconds to get around. Short answer is if you really value your privacy / security then use WPA/WPA2 or don't use wireless at all.
Anyhoo, back to the other issue. So far as I know - the WG111T USB dingle dongle does support WPA. I've been using it and it works fine. You'll want to make sure your running windows XP service pack 2 as this has a lot of wireless fixes and will allow WPA/WPA2 in a lot of circumstances where previously it won't work.
I'm fully aware how easy it is to get WEP down, seen it done myself. However, getting bloody WPA to actually work seems to be extremely hard for no apparent reason.
Even my Wii won't talk to the router with WPA, but connects no problems with WEP.
you updated the Firmware on the router/access point?
you updated the Firmware on the router/access point?
Yes it was up to date at the time and still is. I rolled back to 4.01.20 where some people said they had similar problems which were fixed by reverting to that version, but it didn't help. So I went back to the newest.
The router just doesn't seem interested in doing WPA or above.
hmm well if other people are having the same problem i would have thought the router isnt advanced enough or can not handel WPA. what is it your using again?
oh wait nevermind it says in the title, stupid me.
ok had a search on google and yea people are having the same problem.

BUT
iv also just read you need to upgrade firmware to 1.03.00 ( http://www.netgear.com/support/products/DG834G.asp) to get WPA security
i'm using a DG834GT (not sure how much difference the 'T' makes) but that supports WPA fine (latest firmware from a few months ago). Can even connect with my N95 which is a miracle - that thing barely makes phone calls!
I've had WPA and MAC address filtering running fine on my DG834G for the last year or so. Currently running my PC, a Wii and iPod touch through the wireless without any problems... So I don't think it's an issue with the model of router.
The only issue I have is with too many neighbouring wireless networks, like Barley was saying. Living in a city centre apartment, I've got between 6 and 8 other wireless networks in range. I regularly have to switch to which-ever channels the clearest when new people / new wireless networks move in :(
Nothing like good bit of wardriving
Slightly off dicussion, but just to answer my own question (hidden amongst this thread... the router had completely lost my virgin.net user name, which is why it was connecting wirelessly but not getting out into the big wide world. WPA noproblem...

That firmware is the wrong one for my model, mine's a DG834Gv3. The V1 and V2's have different firmwares, just to make things more confusing for the layman.
