Torn between these to cards running Vista and have a 600 watts power supply....cant run in cross fire mode as its a sli board and after a year with nvida going back to Ati.

definaately 5770, they're about as fast as each other but the 5770 runs cooler, uses less power, overclocks better and has DX11

and after a year with nvida going back to Ati.

any may i ask why?

after a few days with ATI, i want to go back to nVidia for their features and quiet cooler. speed isn't about everything, ATI's software feature kind of lacks.

5770, more future proof and better quality.

Yeah the 5770, also if you have a Crossfire compatable motherboard, you have the option of adding a second for a boost in performance.

5770 crossfire is excellent value for money from the reviews I've read.

Crossfire is cool and all but there's no need to get a big head about it. :chuckle:

+1 5770 over a 4870.

I bought a 4890 instead though. Dx11 isn't high on my list. I'll have the raw power instead, even if it is less efficient. :)

I would have a 5770 over a 4870

i ran the scenarios on this when i had to buy a new card, generally speaking i'm not too fussed about efficiency... bleh!, but, the less heat produced for me is a plus point, and then there is the size, fair enough i was considering a 4890, and at the time was planning a P182 case although that went by the wayside and i opted for a P193, so have the space, DX11 is not high on my list of priorities. However having something new in terms of technology has got to a deciding factor, more frequent/productive driver updates, more likely to find tweaked drivers if your looking for something different.

I went for the 5770 in the end

I'll be going for the 5770 myself, even over the 4890 (which I love it's speed more), but 5770 wins with its DX11, less heat, less electricity usage...

I have heard that most brands of 5770 can be flashed to the Asus voltage tweak bios. Once you got that, the 5770 does insane overclock that can beat HD 4890.

Can anybody confirm this?

Would you need vapor chill or after market cooler for the insane overclock of 1.1ghz core I am hearing?

5770's will overclock to being able to beat the 4870/GTX260 using the stock fan comfortably.

You'll probably get a 5770 able to reach 1GHZ on the core, but any higher really does require a decent chip..
I'd still go for a 1GHZ 4890.

1 ghz 5770 will match or beat a 1ghz 4890 right?

No where near lol.
A 4890's way better than a 5770.

HD 4890 > GTX 260 > HD 5770 = HD 4870

The HD 4890 is the quickest but only supports DirectX 10.1.
The GTX 260 is more expensive than the HD 4890 and is only a few FPS quicker than the HD 4870.
The HD 4870 has identical performance to the HD 5770 but only supports DirectX 10.1.
The HD 5770 with Alien vs. Predator is the same price as the HD 4870 but has DirectX 11 and a free game.

i find that 4870s cost around £80 second hand whereas a 4850 can be had for £40-45, bargain imho!

whereas a 5770 is around £130-£135 ...

£50 difference between a 4870 vs 5770

saw a 4870 vapor went for £85 at fleabay few weeks ago - now the vapor ediition can clock close to 4890

very tempted to get that as it would be sufficient to play most current games- wait a year til the 4870 is no longer viable then get the 5850 which going by past price drop speed should be £150 ...

I was told by a technie that 5770's DX11 is a moot point as it does not have sufficient bus size raw power to use it without taking a big hit on frame rate (not sure how true that is)...

I don't need eyefinity and don't think crossfire is that good a long term solution.

From my own experience of 6600GT and 8800GT; by the time you find you need to xfire or sli, the market has produce another brillant value for money mid range card that works out cheaper to just sell your old card and buy the new card.
