Thats a toughy...!
Lets put it this way...it deffo wont be Maxtor..
cant really grumble as this well known fact keeps me in endless employment.
Never had any probs with Western Digi's or Seagates
Not to sure on Hitachi's
and Fujitsu's are just plain garbage
a company who shall remain nameless, had to recall a huge batch of fujitsu's from most school/college networks Nationally, guess what they gave us in return, yep more Fujitu's...
Westies in my opinion seem to be solid overall
Mighty...

Hmmm...Good question though...lol
I keep gettin caught, lately...must be the natural born agony aunt in me...!
M...
lol - yeah, great question! A mod should edit the post to get rid of the spam element and leave the reply!
The only thing I dont like about WD is the warranty they offer. 5 year warranty, but if your drive goes wrong, they send a replacement which is a refurb model, and give you a 90day refurb warranty on that drive regardless of how long you had left on the original.
Seagate are a great make all round I've found.
*I* make the best hard drives!!!
just wondering.. are any of the mods gonna get rid of the dodgy links out of the first post?
It's a shame that hyperlinks are the same colour and style as normal text on this forum, makes them much harder to spot.

The hyperlinks are dark grey, the text is blac (i think)..
ie Text www.url
subtle, but there. Thats what made me notice it was spam, cos the text colour was off, to hide the url links in the post.
I noticed it was spam because it was talking ********. When read out the context isn't quite right, it's more like a statement than anything, which is odd for a first time poster to do.
On my Dell 19\" CRT the grey and blacks are as close as need be to cause confusion. If they were underlined this would remove the problem of spotting links altogether.

Nothing like a good bit of carpet-bombing in a post ;)
Maxtors are crap, Fujitsu are crap. Stay away.
Seagate & Western Digital are good, but im starting to see a few more of these die recently.
Hitachi are the future, used to be awful! Now they rock!
Meh
If you've been in support for a while you will have seen all of the manufacturers go through bad patches with poor batches of drives. What is really important is how the HDD manufacturers support their drives. For a useful report on drive lifes, look at google's recent experience, based on a study of 100,000 disk drives over 5 years. Download the report here. http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf

Ive had nothing but trouble with every Seagate drive ive had... all of them have died on me (talking 3 or 4 drives over several years)... the last Seagate drive that gave up on me, caused me to lose absolutely everything as i hadn't backed up in years.
I even sent it off to a data retrieval firm, but they couldn't retrieve anything from it... when i asked them what hard drive they'd recommend, they said Seagate... but for the above reasons... i never bought another Seagate... im on a Maxtor currently, and im backing up what little data there is to backup this time...
