View Full Version : Advice needed for new card!
Hey all, my old GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB has packed up and I cant get a replacement, so I'm looking to get a new card.
Basically I'm looking for the best that can run optimally under my aging mobo, processor and power supply. I'm prepared to spend a fair amount, but nothing too extravagant or top of line, considering the aforementioned and I'm also a student. :D Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appriciated, also even if it's just about my system in general, not just the topic in hand.
My system:
Motherboard: Asus P5B Deluxe Wifi
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.4 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 4MB Cache
Memory: 6GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHZ & Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 800MHz
HDD: 2x 500 Gb Seagate ST3500630AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ & 1TB Samsung HD103UJ SpinPoint F1 SATA-II
Soundcard: Clabs XFi Xtream Fatality Pro
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
PSU: 450W FSP PSU 9PX4502000 (This is all the info I could really find - dunno if it actually tells you enough)
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer - (The case draws power for 4 internal fans) and...
Mobo Fan: Zalman CNPS9500 LED PCU Cooler
DVD+RW: Pioneer DVR 112 BK 18x
Thanks in advance!
Thanks, seems pretty much spot on what I was looking for. I'm mainly concerned about power requirements though. Although I read that it's meant to consume much less power than equivalents, I have to consider my 450W PSU and everything else it's supporting. I've edited my first post to include absolutely everything in my case thats drawing power, plus a mistake (I have 3 HDDs instead of 2).
Also, considering I only have a 2.4GHZ Core 2 Duo, will I really get my money's worth out of the card with that holding it back?
Does it say what the 12V Amps are on your PSU, as i suspect it might struggle.
YOu could always get a HD5770 and get a decent PSU as well.
It does not. Well, I can't find any additional info on the unit itself considering I dont have that particular original documentation and that's all my order history tells me. Plus there's no written info on the PSU itself.
I'd rather not get a new PSU as well, considering my long term goal is to build a whole new PC in about 2 years when I've saved up some decent cash. So until then I'd rather just get something slightly lower end that'll be stable. Although as I'm actually going to be paying for a new one here, I definitely want somewhat of a step up from my old card.
with the status of student, halve the budget and you'll still get to play the games, however, the imortant part you miss off is the monitor and what res it runs at. That's got to be the clincher as you'll want a card to run latest games at max res.

LG 19" TFT 1280x1024. Although I've been wanting to get a bigger monitor for ages now as well, so my res requirements are likely to increase very soon too.
Starting to have second thoughts about a new PSU as well now, but still undecided....
with £200, some special deals and a fair wind, there's a new GFX card and a nice Aria monitor in that budget.

Then sell the monitor to even things up a little :D

Oh.... don't tempt me. :p Very very tempting monitor... but it won't have a VGA input on that card if I'm correct? Anyway I think I'm going to go for that 5750, and a new PSU.....
Another question - will a PCI-E 2.0 x16 card work in my motherboard?

Nice combo. Would it also be worth the OP looking for a decent 4890 deal?
I've made my decision. I'm getting a 5770 and a new 850W PSU after all. Hopefully I'll be able to carry the PSU over to my new PC build in a few years.
I'm not gonna get a new monitor at the moment despite how much I'd like one. There's nothing wrong with my current, and hopefully I'll get lucky for my bday in that area. :)
Thanks to everyone for your advice.

Corsair HX 850 modular are 128 on special here atm, top notch psu with 7 year warranty. The HX750 are 109 aswell, plenty of PSU there for 99% of people and you would have 90 quid left to get a 2nd hand card, maybe a 4890 somewhere, would do you fine for a few years.

Just watch out the HX750 and 850 are long PSUs make sure they will fit where you plan on using it!

Same setup I'll be grabbing myself next month.
