Ok The Audi came with only 15" Alloys fitted and they look a little feeble tbh.

How easy is it to upgrade them to say 18" Alloys? Is it as straight forward as just taking the old ones off and fitting the new 18's or do I have to faff about with spacers and other stuff??

Cheers

HI there

Won't throwing on such a huge wheel upset the handling of the car?

Would maybe 17" not be a better choice with some decent tyres and then get the GEO on the car setup right to make sure tyre wear is even etc.

I just put 18's as an example as that thought did cross my mind. 17's would be fine also.

Audi have some very partial 16-17" alloys, was considering a set for the passat.

The replica's on the bay all seem nasty and spoil after a winter of salt, so try and find a second hand set of genuine ones.

Did contemplate a set of the TT's @ £350 for a set of 4 without tyres...

As long as you have the correct offset and PCD you should be fine. I found the best way to get all the info as to what will fit which is to join one of the forums dedicated to your own marque/model. I found a huge amount of info on the Celica forum http://www.celica-club.co.uk/ which enabled me to get a decent set of 17" alloys and tyres to replace the 15" ones fitted as standard.
Personally I wouldn't fit spacers, I believe they put a lot of extra strain on the transmission but ymmv.

ok thanks,.

So the consensus is that i can just put a set of 17's straight on without having to faff about with anything from a set of 15's??????

Cheers

Think Paul b mentioned it on previous page, you have to match the PCD. What is the bolt pattern?

tystar
10-03-10, 15:16
yeah but effectively i could just swap them over permitting I obviously get wheels meant for my A4..

yeah anything with an A4 bolt pattern which should be most VW/SEAT/AUDI alloys

these ones are RS8 alloys, what price is a set of RS8 genuines going for on the BAYE?

Some Celica alloys also fit, VW Golf alloys have the same PCD and offset as my Gen 6 Celica.

May sure the offset of the wheel you put on is ok for you car too.

is there an easy way to find out current offset? eg take the wheel off and look on inside etc?

It might be stamped on the mounting face of the wheel. Something like ET55 or something. I believe the vag cars run really small offsets like ET35.

Another thing to bear in mind is your brake caliper size. It probably wont affect you but some cars with the factory 'upgraded' brakes have a thicker caliper that might not clear the spokes. Impreza's are known for this with their Brembo front calipers.

Correct above. Pretty much all VAG cars are ET35 but you don't have to match this exactly.
The bolt pattern will always be 4x100 or 5x100.
A couple of things to remember. 17's will give a harder ride. And your speedo will be a few mph out as you increase the rolling radius of the wheels.

My car has non stock wheels installed wheels.

Stock tyres are 185/65 14"
Tyres on the alloys are 205/45 16" difference in rolling diamter size is 5 mm or 0.84%

So long as you match the original rolling diameter as close as possible then gearing performance and speedo should be the same, other than the losses in ecomony due to wider tyres and more drag possibly.

Useful link to work out sizes of tyres

I got 53MPG on an 800Mile trip to scotland this weekend, so I can live with the economy loss !

Just remember that if the tyre stands outside of the wheel arch (width wise) you can get done, it is an MOT failure.

Bigger wheels mean lower profile tyres which mean a rougher ride, unless you sort the dampers etc at the same time.

Lower profile tyres mean a lot more money and more risk from curb damage.

If you dont get the wheel/tyre size right it messes up your speedo and can also land you in hot water, ie under reading causing you to flash a GATSO.

ALSO remember to tell your insurance company, otherwise, if you try to make a claim, they will tell you to "sod off".
Obviously this will also increase your premium.

Aint life a bummer.

Wheels can actually poke out of the arches, its the tyre tread that cannot be visible from above. Hence the reason a lot of vw guys run wide wheels with narrow tyres, the sidewall stretches over the type keeping the tread part under the arches. Also you are allowed some sticking out, otherwise even standard minis would fail an mot. as they stick out a cm or so with no arches on.

He is thinking about standard Audi wheels here guys, Not some aftermarket 10" wide wheels with a massive stretch on it.

Stretched tyres are dangerous and i dont like people running them on UK roads becuase soon it will cause a fatal accident.

Ive got some RS888 if you fancy them, (Track wheels):chuckle:

Thanks Mat, Yes I was curious to see if i could easily swap the standard 15's to something larger sticking with Audi standards.

Make sure you look at private audi forms and not just **** etc. Plenty on those sites in good condition with owners that know what they are talking about.

The sun was out today, Will get mine on soon as soon as they sort a massive pothole on the way to work...
