View Full Version : Re-routing wire = Huge drop in temperature.

This weekend I decided to re-route the sata, IDE and some power cables in my PC. I have a 450w PSU (generic) and was thinking about doing the wire braiding mod however I decided to move the wires that use to sit in a big bundle of the case.

CPU Idle Before 29c After 15c
CPU Load Before 50c max After 40c region
HDD Before 30c After 22c-25c
Case Before 45c After 32c

That's quite a big drop by just re-routing! I think I can still improve it by moving the last of the power cables!! (molex & sata power)

What were your ambient temps?!

actually... I have my heating turned down today so its probably a few degrees lower than usual. Across the board a 7c drop was seen. You wouldn't believe the wiring mess I had to start with, the large clutter was the IDE and 20 pin power cable.

*I have 2 fans blowing in on the front and 2 on the rear for exit. Still noisy as hell though.

Is that a Winpower PSU?

I have a 450w one I picked up in a case. Very light weight and very low quality!

I would seriuosly recommend you invest in something better!

wonderlust, that's my next upgrade. I'm looking at the OCZ units or will get an aria

15c idle? how hot is your room because your cpu should be hotter than the temprature in your room

Hi there

Don't skimp on PSU, get OCZ. :)

Although a Corsair is better than OCZ, however you get what you pay for with PSU's.

yeah thats very true i have had a tagan for years now never had a problem but it did cost me over £100 so the more you spend the better quality it is also the better the 12V rails are as well gives the correct power all the time which is good for overclocking :)

its amazing what can happen when airflows across air cooled componants :)

ide cables are the biggest culprit for blocking airflow imo, the wide ribbon ones for sure.

Inspiration.

I think I might move my DVD drives. Put them i nthe two lower 5.25 bays instead of right at the top. That way I can bundle all the excess cables away in the empty space at the top and see if it brings my 40 C idle temp down.

get watercooling idles at 19C then :D and then its dont matter about cables

As long as your motherboard/power section/other components dont rely on airflow coming from the cpu cooler...

i really want the OCZ 400w or 500w but seeing the prices just makes me weep. My bog standard PSU has lasted a few years already but I want peace of mind. Any other brands other than OCZ thats good?

*I turned my heating back on and seeing temp about 3c higher than previously quoted (CPU idle 18c). It does make a hige differece moving the main power bundle and IDE cables.

None cheaper really, although you can google shopping the enermax eco 350W, i paid £34 shipped for mine.

Plenty cool, plenty quiet.

The OCZ for under £40 would be a good choice, i have a tagan at the moment its been very good but am thinking about a 600w ocz modxstream pro

Ive had two winpower psu's in about a fortnight, a 750 that died on sunday, then an 850 modular that never even powered up. Running a corsair tx650 now, so should be good for a few upgrades yet.

sneeker, I hope you don't curse me with that luck!! As long as my winpower last a few more weeks I'll upgrade and stick it into the 'emergency use' bin

i allways seem to find testing a PSU for the first time is a dodgy area as where i use to work i have seen so many blow up and even take the power out to the whole building, enermax are the worst for it along with Q-tec
