Nikon; only the old D20, but a SUPERB camera; I'd kill for a D90 and a set on lenses!!

Canon are an awesome make. Technically superb, solid and an awesome brand name.

I would love to get a Canon DSLR.

I thought that, then used one, then used a Nikon. Both are brilliantly built. Canon just felt wrong in my hands though so went Nikon. :)

Yeah a lot of people recommend getting yourself to a friendly shop and actually getting your hands on a few different makes / models. But you wont go far wrong with a Canon / Nikon or Sony.
A mate of mine had a canon, 450d iirc at the time, and we have a canon 350d at work so i was pretty certain the 1000d would be ok, and sure enough it was.

the canon 1000d is a bare entry level cam tbh and its a refreshed version of the eos400d still a good cam none the less

You can get the lower end of the Nikon "D" series for peanuts these days; even the D20 is a fantastic camera compared to a good "point `n shoot" compact. It will take me until I am 100 years old to figure out all the options, but the "Auto" mode is so good I rarely need to over-ride it.
Just remember. mega-pixels are not everything, prior to the D20 I had a Kodak 8MP camera and IT WAS $HIT, blurry, blotchy photos full of artefacts, the only good feature was the movie mode.
The D20, with a supposedly lower spec blows it away; in two years I have only had one shot that didnt come out right.
If you are a big guy like me, and hate teeny tiny cameras with teeny tiny buttons, get a Nikon "D" series!!

Absolutely agree about it being an entry level camera, i did say it was a starter dslr im my first post in this thread, but its a big step up in quality from a compact or "crossover slr".

You only need check out some of my Kenya holiday pictures to see it takes a decent shot, even if i do say so myself :D.

And one of my "pet" Robin not sure if i have uploaded this one before but couldn't find it. Its a big pic btw

Shortly after getting my D40 I was shooting on full manual, auto is utter rubbish in comparison. ;)

My friend is a buyer for a massive chain of shops in Sweden & a complete camera buff & he'd kill me if I said anything other than Nikon.

Although he does rate highly Panasonic for their point & shoot digital cameras

mines a canon eos 1000d :)

though I also have an old cheap kodak dx3600 which only cost a few quid and an old olympus camera which seems to be allergic to rechargeables not that I ever use either they are just not worth enough to be sold, yet too worthy to be binned
