Virgin Media said it will also be starting trials of its 200 megabits per second broadband network in Coventry.Dammit, why did I move....

I'd switch over to Virgin from BT in an instant if I could!

they still need to get their pricing in gear though..

25-02-10, 15:03
Don't you have to have a TV package though, before they will let you have broadband?

tystar
25-02-10, 15:06
Nope, although the difference in price is about £5 for there basic tv pack.
they prefer customers to take a landline more than the tv pack and as such incentivise more to take a landline with broadband package.

I3R0K3N7FEET
25-02-10, 15:10
yeh its almost impossible to get any package with virgin without getting a 'landline' too imo landlines are an ancient infrastructure that need to be destryed.. theyre only pushed by companies PURELY to keep BT in business ...

25-02-10, 15:12
The TV package didn't used to be as good as Sky, has that improved, think sky stopped selling them the sports channels but don't know that is still the case. If not then could be good value, as the broadband speed is not great where I live and think we can get virgin, at least they stick enough notices through the door to that effect!

Likewise... I actually sync to the exchange at 6.5mb. However, I only get downloads of around 100k and I can't even stream iPlayer at the lowest quality setting because BT now throttle video streaming on their network so it doesnt spoil the experience for other users. I actually think that the network has pretty much reached capacity and they can't do anything about it until all of their scheduled line upgrades are completed, which won't be up and running stably for a couple of years..

it depends.. if you want sky HD it will be better with SKY as theyre giving away HD boxes.. with virgin it will cost you a one of fee of £75 + £5 extra per month on whatever tv package you want.. still again i am sick with virgin's advertising of

20millonuberfastbits download super speed fastest in the whorld!! only £15pm for the first 3 months then £20 there after

*when you take out a virgin landline for £110,000 per month extra

It was only a matter of time. I'm on their 20Mbit package and bar the throttling its great. I feel sorry for those would can't get fibre tbh.

Shame about the upload speeds as already mentioned.

As for the landline, as far as I'm aware it has very little to do with BT at least at the customers end. We were the first in our town to have it installed once the fibre had been laid, mainly as our BT line was being damaged by neighbours tree lol.

Indeed, upload speed is noticably abscent from the article, but for many people its the restricting factor in connecting to the internet.

my virgin broadband has been flaky ever since some workmen dug up the path at the end of my drive for some electrice cables and decided to cut through my broadband cable,
i only knew about it because i saw them with a cable that was broke exactly the same time my internet and tv turned off.
they denied they even damaged it then paved over the pavement again and had to wait for them to finish doing the work later in the week so a engineer could come out and replace it.

Will be interesting to see how much this costs.
If 50MB is £30 (i think) or £36....

I know for that price in Sweden u can get like 100Mb/s or something lol

Speed
24-04-10, 20:08
Indeed, I doubt it will be cheap.

Atm, 50Mb is:

Free for 2 months then £28 a month plus a Virgin Phone line for £11.99 a month. = £39.99/month

Or without a Virgin Phone line £33 a month for 3 months, £38 after that

£20 Activation Fee
£35.00 Installation

So for the first year thats £37.91/month with phone or £41.75/month without.

I can see 100Mb being £60-80/month easy when it first comes out, unless of course they phase out the slower speeds and upgrade everyone, but that doesn't happen very often.

Ice Tea
25-04-10, 00:05
100Mb isn't that like 45GB an hour ?

Oli356
25-04-10, 06:59
100Mb isn't that like 45GB an hour ?
correct - If you can download at max speed.

I know my Swedish mate has 100Mb/s and can download at 40GB an hour - several downloads at once

Ice Tea
25-04-10, 09:14
Thats a serious amount of Linux DVDs per hour :p

Toonshorty
25-04-10, 09:23
100Mb = 12.5MB per second.

(12.5 x 60) x 60 = 45000MB (45GB)

Compare that to my ADSL connection:

7Mb = 0.875MB per second.

(0.875 x 60) x 60 = 3GB

Dare say they will ruin it by having a slow upload speed.

Dare say they will ruin it by having a slow upload speed.

They always do, don't they? Almost all of the cheap broadband deals seem to have one glaring factor bringing them down. I think it's probably because upload speed isn't a big deal to most customers. They spend their time downloading, not uploading so much, so only a few power users are bothered by the upload speed limits.

It's nice to see things getting shaken up a little bit though. Obviously we're all sick of BT connections and slow service -- hopefully this will result in some change.

I've gotten 2.1 from Sky over copper phone lines at times... although my average is more like 1.8... and I bet I pay a lot less. :)

can't believe they are trying to roll this out, while 50% of their customers are suffering bad speeds and stability (i'm on my wifi right now, so it's hard to tell, but when i get back on my wired connection we'll see, but before i was ok)

As for upload speeds, again, complete amazement that they are so f**king p*ss poor slow.

I have 2 phone lines with them, but flat blankly refuse to have the tv package... why should I ? ... i can download TV shows in the time it takes to make a cup of coffee, i know where to search for them, and i can watch them months before the broadcasting companies here are even allowed to air them, because my viewing is now based around the US schedules :P

That said, first chance i get, i'm upgrading :D

I wish they (they being the telecom companies) would stop p!ssing about trying to out do each other with getting ubermegahighspeed connections to 0.1% of the population and get half decent connection speeds to 99% of the population. Some of us have to "make do" with 1meg (or slower) connections because we live more than 3 miles from the nearest exchange. Not everyone can live next door ffs, and some of us have no choice but to use BT's archaic overhead cables as cable just isn't installed locally.

I was at a friend of mine's yesterday... Their village is probably 1000-2000 people, so its not tiny.. It has its own Airport!!

Their exchange is the same one I use. I am lucky as I am on the same road as it (when my isp swaps over) so I get a sync speed of 8mb and a download speed of between 7 and 8mb.. The place I was at yesterday is 8 or 9 miles out of town, and their fastest connected house has less than a 1mb connection..

Cable based Broadband is always more consistant than copper, maybe you do pay less but I'd always recommend Virgin BB to anyone who is a medium to heavy user who can get it.

HecklerUK
10-05-10, 16:58
Well, copper is being replaced by fibre optic cable... so that argument is becoming less relevant as more and more exchanges are converted.

My speeds are consistent, I don't get capped or throttled (unless I do it myself) and the only outages I get are because of my wireless to one PC and the occasional overnight disconnection between 1-2am when they're working in the exchange or rebooting equipment... but even that hasn't been happening recently, so I assume the upgrade work has been completed... I think my exchange has been converted to fibre optic now.

You don't have to follow through with your threat, don't be guilted into doing anything you the customer don't want to do.

You can also play them off Sky for a better deal.
