ok so my gf gave me a 700 pound limit for my bady and i decided a new pc is in order, i only have a macbook pro so something for some gaming, college work and random other stuff would be nice.
from aria and ****, i have come up with the following system, can anyone make recomendations on it, if they would change anything.
Here goes
intel core 2 quad q9650 3.0 ghz
asus p5kl lga 775
4gs ddr2 dual channel 1066mhz
corsair h50 water cooler
samsung lightscribe dvd drive
1tb hatachi 7200rpm hard drive
4890 1gb at graphics card
600w ocz stealth xtreame.
coolermaster haf case
all for 700. What would u change in my budget. Id like the most performance i can get, but i dont see much that can be sacraficed for that.
thanks.
ps sorry for the bad spelling did this before work, thanks
Well the HAF can be binned for a start, depending on the one you want its either 100 or 130 quid which is a big chunk of your budget.
how about a 4850 crossfire setup ? one idea

well i liked the haf, and i will be getting a lightscribe drive, my one i have broke, and i used it alot.
plus what would be the performance differance from the 4890 to 2x 4850s
The HAF is a great case, no doubts there, but its more for mega air cooling or installation of a lot of kit, with the H50 you're not gonna need massive airflow or a massive case, the HAF is huuuuge.
Then again, its also a case for life or at least a good few years, can and will accomodate pretty much anything you want i guess, within reason.
Its just a large part of your budget thats all, you say you want performance, well thats gonna be mostly from your CPU so the i5 is a good bet there now prices are starting to wander in the right direction.
As for the 2x 4850, that was just a stab in the dark, others will extol the virtues of other GPU setups, it mostly depends on what budget you leave yourself for it, hence my idea for a case change. You could always keep an eye out here and there for used GPU's, plenty of people upgrade every two minutes and sell their kit off cheap :)
I really wouldn't buy DDR2 memory and 775 as its now looking old.
I5 cpu or AM3 cpu with DDR3 memory all the way.
Zaz's cpu and memory choice are cracking combinations!

I've always held the opinion that if you've enough money to buy two of the best cards available then go SLI/Crossfire otherwise put all your budget into one card.
If we are advising against LG775 why aren't we advocating dx11 cards? I'd rather have a single HD5xxx.

i know lga 775 is getting old, but isnt it powerful ?
and id prefer the 4000 series ati cards to the 5000 ones, basicly for my budget, id get better performance out of a 4890 than a 5770, and there about the same price , right ?
plus how big is the haf, im gettin it for 70 quid, so i wasnt really botherd about the size, i just seen it as im getting it for like a good deal so its now in the bidget

What did you pay for the Q9650?
The i5 750 outperforms it for a LOT less cash (from the prices I can find on google) and you get the extra performance of DDR3 and better upgradability in the future.
check out some of the toms hardware charts

havent bought it yet, but it was gonna cost me £215
and the comparison is pretty close

How can the comparison be close when the i5 750 is EIGHTY pound cheaper!!!! :p :p :p
Gives you newer architecture,
Performs better in most of Toms hardware tests
DDR3 memory
Far superior upgrade paths
I'd be looking at a i7 920 really if your going to blow £215 on a 775 chip
Now theres a like for like price comparison, and the i7 920 whips the Q9650 with the ownage stick :spank:spank:spank

I nearly died when I seen the OP initial post.
For £700 you should be looking at an i5 build - the i5 750 blasts all the C2Q's as well as all of AMD's range in addition to being partial too a nice overclock.
Everything that seems to of been suggested looks to be spot on, admittedly I wouldn't touch anything other than an aluminium case - especially for £70(ish)
The PSU seems overkill to me again, personally, but this will depend on what card you get. I would suggest exploring the option of getting a 5770 (can be found for around £115) and piling the money into a better motherboard which allows Crossfire allowing you to crack another 5770 in there later down the line.
By using the 5770 you will also be able to scale the PSU back I would think into the 450-550W range saving you a few more pennies.
DDR2 is just so 80's LOL :crash::nana:

Think ill get me the core i5 661 thens. Seems like a good one to pic

Then youre going dualcore?!
Whats wrong with the I7 920 or i7 860 if you were planning to spend £215 on a 775 cpu?

I was born in the 80's so its DDR2 for me then lol

ok i have decided on the following, all from aria bar the case.
Intel Core i5 661 3.33GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) Processor - Retail
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard
G.Skill RipJaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit
Corsair CWCH50-1 Corsair Water-Cooling™ High performance CPU Cooler
OCZ StealthXStream 600W Silent SLI/Crossfire Ready ATX2.2 Power Supply
Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1TB 3.5" SATA II Hard Drive - OEM
LG 22x DVDRW Lightscribe Bare Black + nero - SATA
52 in 1 Card Reader Black with USB
HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
all for £633, and 70 for my case £703
sound like a good system now ?
i was quite surprised, im so far behind with computers, for the same money i built a system that could rip it appart easily.
thanks guys, any opinions on my final choice before i order, and the mobo does support crossfire, as well as the psu
i have been listening, just set in my ways i guess, i do apreciate all the help, and thanks for helping me get a better system.
its should be a sweet one, hope it lasts me a few years, ill get another 5770 down the line and crossfire them
HAF for 70 notes ?? is that the 932 ? PM a link please !!!

whaaaa ???
im confused now, isnt a core i5 a quad core
the haf is from a friend, he bought it, and it sat there, he never built the pc.
ok some help would be good i thought a core i5 was a quad, is there a core i7 that is suitable for a socket 1156
The i5 750 is on superspecial today, as is an Asus 5770. I wouldnt use G.skill for a doorstop personally, but thats just due to a bad experience twice with my i5 :D
I understand what Terbinator is saying about a lower wattage PSU but id still use what money you save elsewhere for something a bit more, well, vavavoom :) corsair, antec etc
edit:
look through the i5 listings and you will see some are dual core, some are quad. Dont know why, just the way it is
Or rather, they're all dual core except the amazing 750, which is quad :D

i5 1156 have quads and duals, in the same way 775 does!
Basically the i5 750 is quad and will save you £80 on your orginal choice. Thats what i'd go for!

The Patriot memory Zaz had on 1st page is a cracking kit.
The F3 drives are regarded as best in class too.

well in that case ill keep the same stuff and go for the i5 750. quad is better than dual core, sorry for all the confusion today.
revised selection.
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) Processor - Retail
OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit
Corsair TX Series 650W ATX2.2 SLI/Crossfire Compliant Power Supply
HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
LG 22x DVDRW Lightscribe Bare Black + nero - SATA
Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1TB 3.5" SATA II Hard Drive - OEM
Corsair CWCH50-1 Corsair Water-Cooling™ High performance CPU Cooler
all for £644 + haf = £714, not bad if i do say so.
ok , so say i dont buy the haff, it has a nice tool less design and has lots of room, what cases are my option that will deliver the same performance, for cooling and looks
If you can get the HAF for 70, get it, i only suggested otherwise cos of teh cost, but youre getting it half price nearly.
wait a sec, got a new list for you :D

With teh HAF, 700 on the nose. Better ram, better HDD, tidy GPU and, on offer today, a more wattage ocz modular PSU for teh same price as the 600 'was' :D
Most of that is on special today too, you're saving loads :)

anyone recomend a different case, the haf dosent have air filters, kind put me off a bit
and the fact its a 922
oh i ordered everything else tho
Wotcha wanna spend on it ?
The cooler master 690 2 advanced is a gorgeous case for 90 notes or maybe less if you shop about. The previous version, cm 690 pure black with window can be had for around 70. The cooler master scout is very popular too, with filters, 76 quid. Notice a theme here ? :D
Eitehr way, if you bought from Aria, pretty sure a quick call to sales would add it to your order for not much more delivery.

i have about 90 left to spend

I think he means the H55 board has onboard vga which you wont need as you're buying a graphics card. But I could be wrong.
