Internet Providers

Hi,

Im going to go to another internet provider, im currently with Telewest (Virgin Media) and have 4mb connection. Now there are better deals out there with ADSL like the Sky offer. Is ADSL good as i have never tried it before as iv always been on cable. Also with ADSL when it says you can get upto say 10mb do you how much do you actually get and what slows the speed from getting the fastest speed if you know what i mean like if there are more homes on my street that have ADSL then the speed will be slower???

I prefer cable, because I've got a static Ip that I can always remember (For hosting games etc within friends etc)

We're currently with NTL's 10mb offer. £20 a month for the first 6 months (currently on the 2nd) then to £25 a month until we cancel or whatnot

I have recently gone on sky BB and at the moment i am on Sky connect, and so far their has not been no problems, oh apart from the e-mail which i have now sorted out,

Hi, my last post scrap it, don't go on sky connect as it's a load of pants, after a month my speed went down from 1MB to about 350Kbps, They are transffering me from the connect package to mid, so if that dosn't improve the speed il be changing ISP.

With ADSL mate you usually always get what you pay for. If an offer looks too good to be true, it usually is :)

Look to spend about £20 a month give or take and you'll get something alright. One factor is how much you download? Would you wanted unlimited downloads, or would you be happy with say a 20GB limit per month?

hi,
i only really download the usual Security updates, the odd music video and a couple of music albums, but i have another computer downstairs thats also connected, but they don't download as much as me.
So i think 20GB is plenty enough.
I think something like Virgin media would be ideal on a cable connection.

going to change to Vodafone at home. 8Mb (checked line over a week and it varies between 7 and 8) unlimited downloads, phone line rental and all UK local and national calls free. Just waiting for my mac from Pipex (\"sorry lots of computer problems so I cannot sort it out yet please phone back\") I do not think they want me to leave!!!!!!!!????? Calls to mobiles a bit cheaper so lets see.

I've never used ADSL, i was once on Dial-Up but since about 6 years ago we've been on NTL, NTL:Tellywest and now, Virgin Media, suffering their lows and vey few highs.

The customer support I have recieved recently was less than satisfactory (except one guy by the nme of Rajan who was VERY helpful) and their once-a-month-24-hour-shutdown really gets on my nerves.

HOWEVER - i once set up TalkTalk for a mother of a friend of a mother and the customer support i recieved to activate the connection was APPAULING! the member of staff i spoke to had a heavy Indian accent and spoke both normal, fast and muffled. at one point i couldn't understand what she had just said and asked her to repeat it, she was so rude!

AOL are pretty reasonable these days, if a little expensive, i pay 36 a month for 8Mb (phone lines round here max out at 6) but i dont get connection issues, have unlimited downloads and dont have my bandwidth capped when i use it a lot, which happened to a friend on tiscali and another on orange.

tech support on the other hand are useless

You should go to Virgin, im on 20meg for £18 due to some clever phone conversation making them charge very little, just upgraded from 10 meg in a free upgrade. The connection maxes at 9kbps, and i have got well over 1mb download speed.

The thing with Virgin Media though, is that whatever offer they do, it ends after 6-12 months.

We signed up a couple of years ago on the 3 for £30 deal. we have never cahnged our package and now pay around £55 +calls.

Ring them, and say you want to cancel.

You should be able to knock them down quite easily.

Exactly how i got 20meg for £18, no deals fixed monthly fee.

Here's a tip - check out Cableforum for discussion of NTL and other ISP stuff. I've been having massive problems with NTL (10mb connection is running like a 1.5mb connection). The problem is all over the network, but specifically Cardiff. The kicker is that NTL (ahem, VM) is still one of the best providers for what you get, so until there's some sort of parity between what they promise, what they delivery and what the consumer should get (compared to, say, Europe) we're stuck with the best of a bad bunch. IMHO.

I am on the 10Meg / 20Meg plan. I get my 10Meg, well 9.89Mbps on a speedtest, so im happy with VM, some sites seems stuck around 30-40KB/s must be some network trouble, but its gone for ages...and its not the sites...ive checked.

Hope they upgrade my area to 20Meg soon. 8)

Okay, just after posting i thought i might check on the modem for speed and it is now 20Meg :D

btw with ntl go to 192.168.100.1 to get modem cp up..

Yes, but the throughput only comes to about 9000kbits at best, must be a heavy usage area.
