View Full Version : Green Machines
Just a thought, I'm one of those tree huggers who hates destroying the environment.
At the same time, I do like my techie toys. :?
But here's the thing - I have no idea which machines pollute least (use the least power).
Aria put wattages on some of their stuff but by no means all. Likewise, you have no idea how far it's been shipped (although the Pacific Rim is always a good bet).
How about being able to sort the components of your choice (e.g. TFTs) by 'greenness'? To make it easy, you could ignore components, distance travelled etc and just cover power consumption for now.
I'm pretty sure you'd be the only company offering this service and a few well aimed messages to government depts and the media could make this quite a profile raiser.
As I said, you already have a lot of the info on your systems, and components where the manufacturer doesn't supply a power consumption figure could simply be flung to the bottom of the list.
Thoughts?
My parts are RoSH compliant thats all i care about.
The rest is performance based, if i have a 1000w microwave then ill have a 1000w psu and not feel guilty.
i figure the time i spend sat in on my pc, if i didnt have a nice pc i would be out driving my 2ltr car which probably does a darn sight more damage.

Also, just because you have a 1000w PSU, it doesnt mean that your system will draw the full 1000w. It will only draw what it needs at the time. Obviously, if you are gaming/folding/doing anything else that requires 100% CPU/GPU time, then it will draw far more power than if it is just sitting there running a screensaver, or in power saving mode :)
Yes - don't get me wrong, I have a dual core death machine myself.
I guess I was thinking that the number of people who want to consider environmental impact is only going to grow, and if no computer supplier were catering to this section of society, then surely that's a missed opportunity.
I'd certainly consider environmental impact when choosing kit. I'd not buy some lame machine that runs on fermented cow manure, but once I've decided on the spec of equipment I want, I'd then consider which will be the cheapest to run...
I remember when people started to go green in the nineties and the birth of engery star compliant monitors and motherboards came about
then people got caught up in having the best again and went back to concentrating on power.
Id buy greener if it didnt effect my power and didnt cost more.
Best green thing i have seen was at a festival last year bottles of water made from natural products, completely biodegradable within 8 weeks of use. And all profits go towards helping the environment. And it was cheaper than a normal bottle of water.

I remember the time when some that had opinions about enviroment and how cars damage it..So I made a point and took him for a drive in the evo  and said what would you rather do save enviroment and drive a boring car and have fun with a big smile on face and drive a good car...lets just say he now drives an Impreza
and all this about global warming etc..don't ppl realize that it's just one big cycle...prehistoric times the volcanoes polluted the air more than what we are doing..then the ice age..did any of this destroy the planet..NO the planet heals itself, just like after forest fires the ground becomes more fertile and plants grow better
Yeah but it also does a good job at wiping species out each time its in a bad way and needs to change
ie jurasic age, ice age etc.
What with the increase in natural disasters in recent years its a minor worry that i dont worry about haha could do with the extra heat in this country.

Irrespective of whether global warming is happening (and I think it is), there is an increasing segment of the population which is willing to spend it's money on 'green' things.
It needn't just be carbon emissions - just look at the increase in sales of organic foods.
By simply using information which is already available to them, an innovative company could tap into this market by offering a 'greener' choice. It needn't be great, simply the best that's available.
Just a thought.

I know what you mean but also bear in mind that nearly all organic stuff (food wise) or stuff that is green is also dearer than the normal. I'm sure only about 5% of ppl would pay extra just o buy something that is bio-friendly (I don't want any friends lol)
If ppl want to stop this so called global warming then they should stop cutting down forests just so they can build more houses/offices/factories, so they get round it by planting saplings elsewhere to replace trees that have took decades to grow to the stage they were before getting cut down, yeah that makes sense not. As for ppl using cars, you got to ask why..it is because public transport just sucks and is over-priced, un-reliable and out-dated in places. If the goverment want to cut down carbon emissions then they need to sort out the infrastructure of public transport first then that may tempt ppl out of cars but until that happens cars will be mainly first choice..
Sorry for the long posts/waffle/rants it's early I'm on holiday and bored sat here waiting for a delivey

Agreed. In this case though there would need to be no price-hike - aria would simply use its existing info on e.g. power consumption and allow customers to sort the product list by that as well as e.g. price.
With no extra costs for this, if it was sensibly marketed, it would be sure to attract customers.

A little off-topic, but again I agree. I live in Bristol and would never consider using the diabolical public transport. At the same time, I work in Bath and would never consider trying to drive a car into Bath. I park on the outskirts and use the park and ride. It saves about 45 minutes and only costs £2.
most PSU's have their effeciency rating on their homepage.
Doesnt tell you £1 for £1 because that depends on your electricity supplier but you can tell how efficient it is.
Absolutely.
But what a hassle to grab power consumptions for each, make a note of them and then make a choice.
How much easier if you could simply rank otherwise equivalent gear by power efficiency.
