View Full Version : OMG I hate Dial-Up!!!
I forgot just how totally horrible and disgusting dial-up internet access is!
I've ordered Freedom2Surf internet, am hoping I can get it here, initial website check seemed to think I could get 5mbps.
So until then I'm using a 56k modem to dial-up. no massive picture please guys :)
Ouchy i remember them days, not nice. :(
yeah, me too.. I finally got my broadband connected last week.
Eclipse was the quickest setup/activation Ive ever had on a broadband order!! Ordered at 4:30pm on the thursday, It was confirmed/accepted on the friday and it was set up and connected at the full 8mb at 9:25am monday morning!
1 working day! Which I thought was amazing. I havent really had a chance to use it enough to really tell you what the different packages are like yet, but it seems pretty good so far..

blimey...
Yep being on dial up is not good. I have been on it since my first PC back in the windows 98 days, and only recently i have been connected on BB. And i tell you all now i would not go back to the slow bus lanes of dial up, lol
Cheers
I remember I used to use Bulletin Boards years and years ago.. it was slow and not very fun. And the service I was with, if you actually managed to find one with someone else on it, it made the terminal window crash and boot you off!!
That was before I moved to Compuserve dialup for about 2 or 3 years.. cant remember what happened after that!
Well it's still killing me. even Outlook won't download my e-mail for some reason, probably refuses to on such a crap internet connection!!
With a bit of luck I *should* have ADSL again on Friday.
Got an e-mail from F2S to say I'm scheduled for a Friday connection. Funny how they can only take up to 10 working days to get my connection going, and this Friday is the 10th day. not off to a good start. Their service had better improve...
Mmmmmm 8mbps connection (well probably 5mbps), can't wait :D
Guys cross your fingers for me! F2S say that my ADSL is complete, I'll let you know when I get home :)

Again, hold your disgust :P The speed of my connection keeps going up and down, apparently it's common in the first 10 days :?
the other day I was getting 4.5mbps, today I'm getting between 1.5 and 2mbps :?
Obviously first thing in the morning is the best time for connection speeds :)

I only get round about 3 to 3.5meg  though my line is supposed to be able to do 4 to 4.5
Well mines still fluctuating a lot because it's the first 2 weeks, but i'm hoping to god it stays at the higher rate :?
This evening for example I'm struggling to even hit 1.5mbps!!
I think mine is low cos interleaving is switched on :(

Ppffftt numbers i can but dream of, we were lucky to get 1mb where i live, this rural lark isn't all its cracked up to be
Well I just tested again this morning and I'm getting 6.8mbps!!!
It'd going to be interesting to see what my line settles at.
I get 4mb, and could go upto 8 if i convinced my dad.

Mine always does whats in my Sig. No drop on peak time which pleases me. Luton is my exchange can you believe.
this is what i got just now.

Heres mine. Im not convinced about the distance tho - I'm actually closer to 200miles from London!
http://www.speedtest.net/result/88964250.png
Im on Eclipse Evolution Broadband - on the cheapest package. So its £13.99/month for unlimited upload/download but our traffic gets the lowest priority. But still, nearly 4mb isnt that bad. I guess living 15miles from their data centre doesnt hurt!
It does get a bit slower at peak times, but it only really matters when downloading big files!
I just got this

mine seems about average then, im on bulldog(theyre ok so long as nothing goes wrong, ever!)
http://www.speedtest.net/result/89128391.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
its midday aswell, so would probably get better ping earlier in the morning:)
I used to be with bulldog in coventry.. They were pretty good as far as speed went, but woe betide anyone if something went wrong! although I did have a secret number that they called me from once that bypassed the queue completely - I saved the number somewhere and it was really useful. I'll try and find it again..
would be great if you can find it again Aaron.
thinking about moving to BT. we make a few calls home to South Africa each month, and even with bulldog's 'cheap' option, it still takes our breath away when we get the bill. BT have an option where it only costs 3p a min to S.A., which would be 3% of what we're paying to make a call home.
Well don't forget that new laws came into play the other day so ISP's can't charge you for getting your MAC to change ISP's. They also have to do it much more quickly than they used to.

My work connection is terrible!!

I think that speedtest only shows the maximum speed you achieved though, not the average. My average was much closer to 256kbps.

Like i said rural doesn't always have its bonuses.
How 'rural' are you guys when you say rural?
[Removed at the request of the author]
Hahahaa nice :)
Well I'm right next to Manchester and Salford, so am downloading at 500k/s at the moment :P
I think my connection just got close to its max! It syncs at the full 8mb, but as I said, I'm on the 'low priority' package, so alot of it depends on what else is going on at the ISP... but here we go anyway!

Well i live about 2 - 3 miles or so outside of a reasonable size town but i have fields out the front and rear of the house 1 bus comes along once a week or something stupid hence semi rural, more importantly where adsl is concerned i live about 3.5 - 4 miles from the exchange, as the cables are routed, so 1mb is a bonus and it gave us no end of hassle till they came and rewired the extensions some cowboy had put in before we moved in. They also gave us a funky micro filter so only that socket has both broadband and phone all other extensions are wired of the phone socket of the master so they don't need microfilters :D

Well it's been a week my my connection seems to have settled down quite a bit now.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/90631502.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
when they say that it has a 10 day stablizing period what they forget to tell you is that it is really never ending yes it may settle down after 10 days but that is just to find your sync rate and MSR setting for fault calculation..so if you have a slightly bad connection for a few mins or have to reboot your router a couple of times i quick succession that will make the system think there is a problem and lower your sync rate and raise your snr margin to compensate also it may switch on interleaving which will lower speed a little and increase pings, once the system sees that your connection has been fine for about 4 days it *should* raise the speed/sync again..but BT being BT then it may not always happen like that
Well it's been 12 days or so now, and I'm quite pleased at the average speed I'm getting from my line :)

Very nice speed Barley, the one in my sig was what I got while downloading a 100mb file at 700kb/s heh
