I am trying to figure out what combination of drives I am going to be using in my new build.

For fast booting and gaming I'm thinking an SSD is a big improvement over 10,000RPM drive? Also, it will be quiet!

That means I'd be looking at around 80-100GB for 'run' drive.

Then a few TB for data storage.

There's so many different thoughts going around about SSDs I don't know which type or size will meet my needs!

If you have a SSD running in this sort of config how are you finding it?

Running Windows 7 64 Bit and I use a 40GB Intel SSD for the OS and a VRaptor 300GB for games. Works great, highly recommended.

You will see a massive improvement to the OS with a SSD. More so than anything else you could do to your PC. Assuming it's fairly up to date

120gb OCZ Vertex SSD - O/S and main Progs
Samsung 1TB - Storage
Maxtor 300GB - Storage
WD 300GB - Storage

Flies along. :)

Best setup would be:

Intel X25-V/M/E for boot
OCZ Vertex / Patriot TorqX for games & apps
Samsung F3 as storage.

Whats your budget ? Personally i eould recommend going for the Intel 80GB G2 for OS and a F3 for programs, games etc.

No real concrete budget. I'm weighing up a complete new build. Will be looking at best bang for buck! I'm not sure whether to go for a 5960, 5870, 5850... If I got for the 5850 and overclock it will open up cash for other components.

Once you try SSD, I think you will never go back for HD.. But budget will be a issue~

i think if you are only using it to run op, then a 32gb will be sufficient, as the price of ssd is deep at the mo. using normal sata hdd for extra storage is a very sebsible combination, in my experience, as it is cheap and reliable.

Personally I would spend the minimum possible on SSD at the moment and ensure I had a SATA 6GBs controller on my new motherboard. 80GB Intel seems to be far and away the most recommended without going silly. It is also large enough to take your main apps and a couple of current games as well as the OS. For me it is an ideal size for a laptop / netbook so would be put to good use if upgraded.

i wouldnt get anything to pricey probs around 30 - 60 gb will do and just use a former hd for storage.

been looking into SSD myself for a while now. i must say the OCZ spec-wise looks nice. think i will wait until prices drop though. i'm not enough of a speed demon to be paying £2/GB ;)
