View Full Version : Spec Me A Mobo & RAM
Very much after the i5 deal that is coming up on wednesday. Can someone spec me a motherboard and ram for it? Can you get a mobo with onboard graphics for it or if not a very cheap GPU that will play games, be it at lowish settings. Cheers

There's a large difference between onboard graphics and a very cheap GPU that will play games on low settings
Board wise...always best to go the cheapest :D all using the same chipset :)

Comes with intergrated graphics :)

That is about as cheap as you can go if your going to play any games ;)
Hi,
The H55 motherboards have onboard graphics and support the i5 Processors, I personally prefer the Gigabyte (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Intel+Socket+1156/Gigabyte+H55M-UD2H+Intel+H55+(Socket+1156)+PCI-Express+DDR3+Motherboard+?productId=39272) varieties (more of which will be added in the next day or two) some Corsair (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3/DDR3+1600+(PC3-12800)/Corsair+DDR3,+1600MHz+4G+2x240DIMM,+Unbuffered,+9-9-9-24,+XMS3+with+Classic+Heat+Spreader+?productId=375 70), G.Skill (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3/DDR3+1600+(PC3-12800)/G.Skill+RipJaw+4GB+(2x2GB)+DDR3+PC3-12800C8+1600MHz+Dual+Channel+Kit+?productId=37613) or Patriot (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3/DDR3+1600+(PC3-12800)/Patriot+Viper+II+%22Sector+5%22+4GB+(2x2GB)+DDR3+P C3-12800C7+1600MHz+Dual+Channel+Kit+?productId=39264) 1600MHz DDR3 would go nicely and allow you to show off the overclocking capability of the CPU and Motherboard

The i5 750 doesn't have an integrated GPU, so the outputs of the H55 motherboard won't work.
GigaByte H55M-UD2H (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Intel+Socket+1156/Gigabyte+H55M-UD2H+Intel+H55+%28Socket+1156%29+PCI-Express+DDR3+Motherboard+?productId=39272)
£84.59 inc Vat and has onboard graphics.
G.Skill RipJaw 4GB (http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/G.Skill+RipJaw+4GB+%282x2GB%29+DDR3+PC3-12800C8+1600MHz+Dual+Channel+Kit+?productId=37613)
On superspecial for £88 inc Vat. DDR3 1600Mhz with CL8 Timings.
There is a big difference between onboard and onboard and a cheap card, as Will said.
For the Graphics card, what resolution will you playing at, and what games? Also, how much do you consider cheap?
Again, what Will suggested it what I would have said. The 4650 is cheap, and will play games much better than onboard graphics.
But don't expect to be gaming at high resoultions with a decent FPS.

ah yes sorry that is a good point  and one that I keep forgetting (although I always remember that the i7 doesn't work) only i3 & i5 600 series (such a silly way to do it)
At the moment I cannot think of any 1156 boards which will provide onboard graphics with the i5 750
This is what comes of Intel confusing themselves over what they want their new chips and chipsets to do :p
I personally would never again go for onboard graphics, i recommend highly going for the cheap graphics card, it will free up your motherboard and greatly increase performance, or rather if you dont, you will have a hard time playing most games, like CS:S for example I tried to play with onboard graphics, it wasnt good.
The Gigabyte board that I linked earlier is a great board and cheap too. I personally got an i5 650 stable at 4.8GHz on air using this board.
Nice motherboard. Obviously a seperate GPU needed. Thanks
there is a slightly cheaper version without the onboard HDMI (obviously not needed here) which clocks a little better. It's one of the first on my list to add when I get my hands on the motherboard group tomorrow so it'll be in place in plenty of time for the i5 750 deal.

Which motherboard is that? Best ram to get too?
If youre not gonna overclock, dont bother with any ram above 1333mhz as thats the default speed of the i5.
If you are, get something other than G.skill, if my experience is anything to go by they are a waste of time, LOADS of users on the G.skill boards are having config problems with it so im not the only numpty about :)
Patriot Viper II "Sector 5" 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit - £82.24

I have always preferred Asus for motherboards, used them for as far back as I can remember and never had an issue, so I would lean towards this:
Asus P7P55D LE, Intel P55 Chipset, DDR3, 1156 Skt, ATX
It's cheaper elsewhere but I have informed Raz and he will possibly sort out a price... so keep a check on that one.
Buy a cheap gfx card but don't do onboard!
I run that board with patriot viper 4gb and an i5 at stock, its very good.
My only real niggles with it are the chassis2 fan header impedes the cmos reset jumper when you have fat fingers like me (needle nose pliers job) and it only has 6 standoff holes where it could really use 9 for stability when inserting ram, but thats no biggie if your careful.

:surprised: blasphemy! Get overclocking, you can probably get 3.5ghz at stock volts out of that. :)
