[quote:47e792593c=\"ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ\"]Raptor drives FTLoose,
Why bother?
36GB....Thats, well....pathetic.
And for what lol, and extra 2800rpm, not worth it unless your maybe setting up a home server to stream media....even then....with 36GB you aint streaming a whole lot!
Save money and get a WD 350GB Sata2.
If you were actually getting it that is :)[/quote:47e792593c]
Haha no I could never afford it, but I already have over 300GB of storage, that Raptor would just be for a nice fast Windows drive :)
My media server has 5x 300GB HDDs in it, three in RAID5 and two in RAID0. 8)
As for the above I believe we offer credit?
id like to put 2 x 150gb raptors on raid for my O/s
Just for the extra performance :D
putting the disks on a stripped volume would double the performance.
£300 for 150gb of data might as well think about scsi instead.
stipped raid? half the data on one drive half on the other, assuming your using 2 drives, least thats how i understand it.
Yeah thats right. Striped raid = normally 2 drives working as one. Windows sees is as one single drive, but it uses 2 drives. Therefore, 2x the capacity with generally increased performance all round.
However, Striped Raid0 isnt great unless you REALLY need the performance, or you have a backup solution as well as the Raid array. I use 2x160gb in one of my boxes but thats cos I use it for video editing. And it all gets backed up.
And imo, raptors are overpriced for what they are. Coupla seconds quicker into windows and games, but thats about it. If you really want to spend money for performance and have some old DDR1 sticks laying around, start looking at iRam stuff instead.

Spose it's usefull if your running a big server at a company.....no use to me in my little bedroom looking at porn though 8)[/quote:75da4aaa5e]
Quite the opposite actually. Stripped RAID puts half the data on each drive, which theoretically makes for better performance, but it also doubles the risk of losing ALL your data if just one of the drives breaks.
Companies are more incluned to use mirrored RAID, where a copy of all your data is put onto each drive :)
or both :P
Am i right in thinking vista you can plug in memory sticks as extra ram?
I think so..but I don't think I will need more than the 4gig I got in now

Bill Gates, 1981 - \"Nobody will ever need more than 640k RAM\"
Bill Gates, 1996 - \"Windows 95 needs at least 8 MB RAM.\"
;)
I've never bothered with mirrored RAID, I keep most of my stuff backed up onto DVD-RW's, so doesn't matter if one of my drives dies to be honest :)

[quote:d56e5b9254=\"PrivatePyle@Work\"]Yeah we use RAID 1 in all our servers, mirrors everything across so if one dies everything is safely spread on the others. And it's all about 3ware RAID cards too, they're the only decent ones out there![/quote:d56e5b9254]
At my old office they used to have a recovery site, so all files were backed up every 15 minutes via a satellite connection to the other building :)
I know having half your systems hard drive free increases system performance and stability, so never let your HDD flll up.
However striped raid really worth it, really make that extra little bit of speed to a game? I would have said no.
The benefit of only half your data being lost is little comfort or use for some file types, only being able to watch every odd numbered scene in a film for example. (Yes I know it isn't that exact.) and any actual software is either installed on one drive anyway or requires reinstalling so you are better off just backing up. Get a freecom 250 USB external.
Also increased read / write lessens the life span and increases noise as both drive are always in use.
Servers for company's yes. Playing games / Watching DVD's (or pr0n) at home I can't see that getting much of an improvement. Not one you would see. At least none that couldn't be accounted for by the improvement in HDD read for being SATA2 and a better chip, RAM etc.
But 36GB is pants. I have three or four games that after install would fill your 36GB. :)
