View Full Version : Software underclocking
Does anybody know of any software that'll let me reduce the voltage and multiplier/FSB on a celeron 336 that I have in my file server, want it to run cool, silent and cheaply :)
any help/suggestions much appreciated
(btw it's a generic acer mobo so no bios options)

Would it work to follow the instructions that the rabid overclockers user but turn down the wick instead?
I have been looking at energy efficient CPUs. I reckon this is where we'll see a lot of progress in future. After all, speed isn't really an issue these days for most applications.
I was talking to the head of Cambridge University's IT department recently. His group is gung ho on sustainable computing.
votage, not really no but clockgen and setfsb can change the speed.
it's a generic acer board from an matx desktop thingy and isn't recognised by clockgen so won't let me change it, havn't tried setfsb though. Will lowering the FSB make much of a difference without a voltage decrease?
not really no:( voltage has the biggest effect on temps :o
might not bother then, might try picking up a cheap board so i can underclock it, ideally need a few more ports too, atm i have ports for 2X2IDE drives and 2 sata :P
anyone got an old LGA775 board? 945P type chipset would be ideal
I'm sure Asus had some software that underclocked your system.
I think so anyway, I don't know if you could try to find that and see if it would work on your rig?
I rather suspect that reducing the voltage will actually stop the processor from working at all. There is a minimum voltage at which the "transistors" will actually work.
It is not the voltage that is important, it is the current drawn that creates the heat.
Reducing the clock speed will reduce the current needed.
