View Full Version : Power Supply turning on...
I know this is a stupid question, but if I plug it in and turn it on should it turn on?
I'm asking this because I've bought some parts for a new build. At the moment don't have much though so just plugged the DVD drive into the power supply and turned it on.
Should this do anything? Or is it the sort of thing where it needs to receive a signal back from a motherboard to actually turn on and start the fan going?
It's an OCZ StealthXtreme 600W
No. Flicking the switch on the back will power your PC but shouldn't boot it up.
Doesn't your PC case have a front button/switch with a connector for the motherboard jumpers?
On the 24-pin connector, there's a green (pin 16) and black (pin 15 and 17 work) wire. It's when a connection is established between them that the PSU starts and the system boots.
Very handy to know which pins to short to boot when testing PSUs.

Don't have most of the components yet, just got a case/DVD drive/PSU. Wanted to test the PSU was working by literally plugging it into the mains, and then a DVD drive to the PSU. If I plugged just these two in and tried pressing the switch and pressing the tray open button would anything happen?
No mobo, no nothing else, just PSU and DVD-drive.
there's a thread on here pretty recently on PSU testers, I would advise looking at them, I wouldn't 'play' as you risk blowing up fuses in your new part :)
DT.

Okay, so short those two pins and it should power on? What do you recommend using to short them?
Will try and resisting playing about with it any further.
I use those cable twist tie things. Just take a bit of plastic off the end and they work a dream.
Yep, shorting the green pin and any other black pin will power on the PSU. Done it many times before myself.
I just use a generic cable that I cut off an old PSU, though any metal would work.
