Hitchai quicker yet cheaper maybe? Great price for a 2TB :)

You quoted the price on a Superspecial there, the price for those Hitachi drives is £108.09.

Even so, I wonder what the major differences are between them (ie. Why are Hitachi cheaper).

Given the choice, I'd get the Samsung. They're known to be great drives. Hitachi on the other hand, from personal experience, not-so-good.

I'd go with the quicker Hitachi personally.

I use a 1TB Spinpoint and love it. Great drive.

Can't say much about Hitachi tbh

the hatachi is quicker because of the spindle spead, from past xp tho hitachi drives tend to make more noise than samsung ones.

I'll never buy another Hitatchi again, ive had 3 deskstars fail on me and 3 of the previous IBM deskstars fail on me too, usually only after 18-24 months, which is a poor return for the investment.

That said, ive also adopted the strategy of renewing my OS drives every 18 months anyway, pushing the old one on as a secondary backup so its not an integral part of my system.

Sooner or later all drives fail and regardless of what you use them for, it stresses the need for a good backup system.

I would choose 2 1TB over 1 2TB on that basis alone, half the chances of critical failure affecting your work, and i would choose the Samsung over the Hitatchi even if it was twice the price.

I'd go for the Samsung too...

Never had a Samsung drive fail on me yet (currently have 3 and have had at least another 3 in recent years. Hitachi on the other hand have failed 3 times in 7 drives, I currently have an 80gb and a 160gb sat on my desk that are both hitachi and both have failed.

I've also had a WD and a Seagate fail on me... I'm sure a Samsung will at some point, but the Hitachi seem to have a higher failure rate in my own experience.

I prefer samsung drives now, in fact I just took delivery of 2x 1.5TB eco drives for my HTPC.

A while ago, not knowing anything about hard drive manufacturers, I bought a Samsung 400GB 2.5" for my laptop, as it was by far the cheapest option. Turned out to be a fantastic drive! Hitachi on the other hand :S...

I always had a downer on Hitachi since they were a sponsor of Liverpool FC in the 80's - remember "Hitachi Case" (Case being an LFC footballer)?

I'll wait for sub £100 Samsung 2TB drives. RPM doesn't bother me.

I think this thread may have affected hitachi sales :D

I think Hitachi problems are in the past but i still prefer Samsung and would easily pay the extra even for a slower spindle.

The 2TB samsung are 4x500GB platter so they are quick anyway and i heard they are dead silent. I need to order one I think!

IBM-HITACHI might spin faster but it can't compensate the inferior area denity since it runs with 5 platters instead of 4... Go for the Samsung all the way!

the problem for me is that that the drive is 5400rpm, does anyone know of any benchmarks? Apparently, the 2tb WD which is 5400rpm (intellipower) can hold its own with 7200rpm drives

Power consumption and noice vs performance. (5400 v 7200). At one time in the past, 5400 was the faster drive... (a long time ago)

One of the 4 Samsungs in my NAS has started to go clicky, every 40 seconds or so it clicks at me but problem is I have no way of knowing which one it is! I have done some digging and it does seem I am not the only one who has experienced this. Now all the SMART data looks fine for all 4 drives but I know it wasn't doing it for the first 2 weeks of ownership, it just started one day and is REALLY annoying me at the moment!

I've bought about 6 Hitachi, 3 Seagate, 4 Western Digital and 5 Samsung drives over the last 10yrs. Going back to 30, 40, 80GB Seagates (none of them failed on me), then the Western digital where a mix of 80, 120, 160GB and 2 of them failed (one of them after 11 months and one after about 5yrs). Of the 6 Hitachi drives, I have had 3 failures, 2 were within 6 months and 1 within 15 months. The other three have either been sold on or are still in use by me today... as OS drives Two I've had 18 months and the other 3yrs (this one was originally used as a storage in an external caddy and then reused as an OS on my HTPC).

Of the 5 samsungs I have bought... none have ever failed. a 160GB I bought about 5-6yrs ago was in use as an OS drive until that PC died 18 months ago, and it was then added to the new build as a storage drive. and was recently sold to a friend and is still going fine. The others are large capacity 750GB, 1TB and 2x 1,5TB.

I find the Samsungs (low power eco ones) to be perfect for storage drives, and their 7200rpm normal ones are perfect for main drives. They are the quietest drives I've ever owned and so far the most reliable.

Hitachi have been the most unreliable for me so far. The Hitachi drives currently being used as OS drives are a constant concern and are far noisier than other 7200rpm dives I have owned.

However... the majority of the Hitachi drives were IDE, with ony 20% of them being SATA. 4 of the Samsung drives have been SATA only the 160GB was IDE.. the WD and Seagate ones would have all been IDE also.

Based on that experience, I'd buy samsung most of the time... but sometimes price plays a bigger factor and I'd certainly consider a Hitachi if the price is right as I would hope that their failure rates have been improved by now on the new models.

hitachi should be banned from selling hard drives
