View Full Version : Opinions on a "silent" case at a good price? Nexus?

Hey guys,

Being a heavy audio user, and my pc being the engine room of my project studio I thought this time round on my newest build it was time to invest in some quiet casing.

The Nexus "version one" case appears to be a really good deal at £66, whereas the edge seems to be a little overkill hitting £120. I wouldnt mind investing the extra cash if it really was DAMN quiet, but as we all know true silence requires a fairly large investment in components, and im not actually sure a case alone is going to be able to achieve huge things. I have heard of a ludicrously priced zalman however LOL

Your opinions please gents!

No such thing as a silent case IMO, it's all about your internals but something with thicker panels like the Lian li lined with the sound dead foam will help :)

I would invest in a decent CPU cooler and a fan controller tbh.

The Cosmos is very quiet. Thats the Cosmos, not the Cosmos S, the Cosmos S sounds like a jetplane if you have lots of fans on full whack

Fractal Design Define R2? Built in sound padding and thick walls. Brilliant case :D

Just make sure you have the sound deading foam that will help but i would get some good quiet fans in the case. I personally use noctua fans as they are very good quality and have limitors to use with them so you make them quieter aswell, will all help you.

I'd also go with the Antec P182. I personally use one as a media centre, and after replacing the stock fans for some Scythe Gentle Typhoons, and using 30GB OCZ Core V2 SSD, its barely audible.

Thanks for all your input chaps. It's looking increasingly likely i'll get that fractal design case- hadnt heard about it and it has amazing reviews. :thumb:

I was going to get a Fractal, but then someone pointed out that it looks like a mini fridge, now that's all I see when I look at them.

As everyone has said, it's not really the case that makes the noise, it's the componets.

You could get passive cooling for all your componets, but that is at the expense of higher temps.

For a quiet case, one with not many fans, thick walls, and sound dampening things like rubber mounts etc. Foam padded cases are SUPPOSED to reduce noise, but I've never had experience with them myself, and it's usually only a few Db.

Quiet fans are a must. Noctuas are supposed to be excellent quiet fans but then again, never used any myself.

I'll vouch for Noctua, got 4 of the 120mm - vastly better than the stock Antec that came with the P180 I had a while back.

I'll let you guys know how I get on with it when it arrives.

Let us know how you get on TMM.

It's a possible purchase for me, but I'll probably have a go at modding my Antec 900 first :D

the thing with fans is you get what you pay for, cheaper fans tend to have more motor whine than the more expensive ones which is what drives me nuts more than the woosh of the air they push.

I would also get a decent PSU....the only thing that makes noise on my computer is the PSU.

Thermaltake power supplies have recently taken my fancy! Not sure where you can buy them from though.

Does this open to reveal the optical drives? or are optical drives too 80's for this case and going the way of the floppy :D
