it needs to be good to grab me away from bf2
i dont think even crysis will do that
Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are the ONLY games that i have ever gone back to, playing again and again. They are THAT GOOD!!!
Well obviously, that is just my tuppence worth ;)
However, in the words of Tom Hanks:
\"Er, Aria, we have a problem\"
If you are running Windows XP 64 bit edition, do not allow the Steam engine to update itself. This will cause HL2 to stop working. Dead, kapput, ducked. AFAIK, this applies to the 64bit XP, the 32 bit standard XP is absolutely fine. Whether this also applies to Vista 64bit, i have no idea.
Mind how you go now!
Edited by me: FYI, if you have already experienced this issue and cannot resolve it, just add \"-32bit\" minus the quotes, to the games launch option. Right click the Steam icon on the taskbar, select \"Games\", then right click HL2 and select \"Properties\". On the General tab, click Set launch options and enter -32bit into the box.

Ive gone back to HL2 a few times now.. I really enjoyed that game!!
I will have to install HL2 again and try it on the 64bit version of ultimate

Good plan, it will be very useful to know the outcome of that so i can decide as to whether i upgrade now or later when Steam get their finger out and fix this problem!
Cheers Biodoid!
I'll do it tomorrow lol too tired now plus I can't remember where my HL2 disc is
and here is a screen

ok installed fine and runs fine..runs smoother than last time I played but that could be down to my cpu as I only had a P4 2.8 last time
even the beta driver for my audigy 2 zs works fine
and it's dx10 8)

That's just excellent news Biodoid, cheers for that!
Mind you, there could be a jealous streak appearing any minute now, so i better log off pretty damn quick! :D
even better next week or soon after when newer drivers get released to coincide with the general release of vista..at the minute I'm just playing with it on a spare hard drive and having dual boot with xp to be on safe side
Actually, thinking back to HL2, has Steam updated itself to 64bit HL2 version?
This problem with the game suddenly not working only happened one day after i tried to play HL2. Steam kicked in and downloaded it's update to make HL2 into the 64bit version. When it had finished updating, the game proceeded to load correctly, but all subsequent attempts to play the game failed to start!
Is that a 8800 u got in there too? I heard that nVidia would not release a driver for Vista until the actual launch date. Seemed a silly idea to me.
I'm poor lol I've only got a Galaxy 6600GT (though it does have ddr3 on it)
I'm not sure about other thing..I know steam updated etc but don't know what it done lol I know it plays and works on 64bit vista
update..it worked after install and update but seems all the updates weren't installed because when I went to play again before it updated some more now it won't start but that could be either the update or *cough* my version of game
but it did work fine when I first installed
Yes, i think that is what happened to mine. It updated but then played fine. Went back to it next day and after another update it didn't work. Whatever it does at that time stops HL2 64bit from working. Use the solution posted above ( -32bit ) and it should work as before, no matter which version you have *cough*damn*cough* :)
Strange CS:Source works :?
