Just got back from my cousins house, their PC was playing up so as the family PC repair man I went round...

It's painfully slow tbh, for some reason it wouldn't boot up from the win xp disc so I was forced to put win 7 32 bit on there. Installed fine, but it could do with a ram boost, it's currently...

Dell Dimension 5150
P4 2.8Ghz
512MB Ram
80GB HDD

...and win 7 crawls on 512mb ram, I am sure 1gb would make a huge difference.

How easy is it to replace the ram on these dimensions and which ram will I be looking at? Thanks. :)

I have had win 7 ona Celeron 400 with 512Mb and yes it crawled too

The good thing about Dell is that they put all their system details online.

That baby is upgradable to 4GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM. It also should be pretty easy to upgrade.

That is super :D thanks.

Tbh with you, win 7 ran ok, I managed to get all the main things installed and it was chugging along just fine but it was struggling at times when it really didn't need to be...

I won't go all out for the 4GB but I will try and get a nice 2gb set as that should compliment the system well.

I hope ddr2 prices aren't through the roof right now? :p

Good point!

to be 100% sure use the Dell tag number and it will confirm that for your actual PC

Nope it's DDR3 that's expensive because lots of people are upgrading. DDR2 therefore should be a steal!

Best get it soon though before it starts becoming obselete and retailers stop selling it.

I dug out a specification from the net if you wanna check out anything else:

Looks fine to me but I'll leave it to the RAM experts to confirm :D

Btw I meant DIMM slots when I said PCI slots. That's why I edited my post xD Just so you don't try and jam a RAM stick into a PCI slot! :P

I have done some silly things but thankfully I've never done that... :D

Ram experts, please confirm the ram I linked too is ok for the dimension 5150!

Gibbo are you gonna do me a deal on the ram, plus a PSU, fan controller and antec fans?

it should be fine HOWEVER. Go to www.crucial.com and use their memory scanning tool. It should confim this for you with no errors from any possible false info online.

I was going to say Crucial but decided not to put a competitor in. I guess he can check what he needs then order from ARIA :D

Guys, I have just found:

Kingston Technology 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM

for £6.65 a stick. This should work right?

Or even...

Fujitsu - Memory - 1 GB - DDR2 - 667 MHz / PC2-5300 ???

For a similar price!

I just upgraded the memory in a similar spec dell

runs fine now on windows 7

I picked up 1 stick of 2GB ram from someone on another forum. I am gonna test it out tomorrow but if it doesn't work, the guy I got it off said to contact him and send it back and he will send me out another 2GB set to try out. :thumb:

Hopefully this should work though. :)

Sorted.

A 2GB stick of crucial ram picked up for £18 did the job. It made a MASSIVE difference on Win 7. :thumb:
