Having just had my Hiper 530w Type R expire my 580w is starting to worry me, more so when the new OCZ has 480w on the 2 12v rails compared to my Hiper 580w's 360w!?!? http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cases/Hiper_TypeR_580W_2.html
So I am looking for a suitable PSU to run my system,
Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz (at the moment)
4Gb PC6400 @ 4.4.4.12 @ 2.2v (2x2Gb)
3 7200RPM Sata drives
2 Sata Burners
upto 7 120mm fans (currently using 5)
BFG GTX260 216OCX
http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll177/teddyformandy/gpu-z.png
I would like it to be a modualr PSU but I do have a few wants/needs that are possibly out of the ordinary.
1. I need at least one of the Molex lines to be 650mm
2. I need the P4 12v line (or 8 pin) to be at least 600mm
3. All cables to be braided
4. if possible twin PCI-E 6 pin leads (although I have a molex to 6 pin adaptor if need be
5. the 20/24 pin cable to be about 500mm long.
Anyone know of a quality mid priced PSU that matches that spec?
I can't answer your 5 questions but you can't go wrong with a Corsair PUS. This (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/500w+%2B/Corsair+TX+Series+650W+ATX2.2+SLI%2FCrossfire+Comp liant+Power+Supply+?productId=29099) should fit your specs.

Budget 500/600w OCZ stealthstream.
1, OCZ stealthstreams have rather long molex cables..
2, The *pin will be a problem as most are about 45cm. An extension is probably in order here.
3, OCZ stealthstreams all braided!
4, Again OCZ stealthstream.
5, An extension is going to be needed here too...
Pricey Corsair TX650 (in comparison)
1, Cables are pretty long, this long? I honestly dont know.
2, Agian with the above.
3, Not all braided but the wiring is all black and very sleek + tidy as a result.
4, Not a problem here.
5, Long cables, this long? Again I dont know.
Andy
Corsair 750, everything you want but not modular.
Cable tidying is easy enough anyhow.
Get the manual here - verrrrry long cables (one of the molex is over 1000mm!)
http://www.corsair.com/_productmanuals/P49-00002%20TX%20Manual%20Read%20layout.pdf
get it here

If you MUST have modular get the PRO version , but can you warrant an extra £20 just for not having to do some cable tidying?

£60-70ish really
I have no plans on upgrading anything in the near future so 750w is a little overkill surely?

Not really overkill, i always go for the highest quality/power i can afford in the hope it will last a few more upgrades :)
For that budget my choice would be the OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w

I'd second the OCZ Modxstream 700w. These modxstreams are modular and all braided ect.
Fine units;)

Yes it is. PSU's are not always *efficient* unless running at a certain % load, i.e if you have an 850W PSU and your max load is burning just 250watts it's losing efficiency. For the OP's spec the 650 is more than enough.

I must say the OCZ units are rather good.
I have a 400w unit here to keep a media centr going. It was fine for a dual core overclocked to 3.7ghz, 2 HDDs, a blu-ray drive and an OC'd gtx260. Brilliant unit!

well I just got a 500w kindly from Aria and that is running my server, nice to have peace and quiet again ;)

That is the case for older/cheaper psu's but it doesn't really matter on newer/better units.

Edit: here is the 500w model, efficiency looks good to me even at 150w http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/power_supply/ocz_modxstream_pro_500w/4

Very nice unit lol! As I have said, got a 400w unit here and it does the job perfectly.

The 500w stealthstream is almost fine as a replacement in my 3D Aurora, as it has a top mounted PSU.
I say almost as the Sata power lead is a little short, but having said that I have been spoilt with the Hipers 650mm Molex lead!
So the build isn't quite as tidy as I would normally like, but thats just me being a bit OCD
But in the CM690 with the borttom mounted PSU I would have to use an extension on the P4 12V or run it over the top of the motherboard, which I really don't want to have to do.
As it stands:-

Im rather impressed at how tidy that is... I used to have the blue type-r 580w, gave it away mind for some odd reason...

Thats rather good value! Im thinking of building a completely scratch built case. Should be fun! Its something I looked into.. that and machined feet. Being able to move it is always a bonus :D

Can't beat jonnyguru for PSU matey.
From the pick of Arias range and your price it would have to be the OCZ ModXstream 600W.
Cable lengths here.

The 400W StealthXStream is actually better quality than the rest of the StealthXstream series. ;)

yeah 18" on the P4 12v line is too short.
Needs to be 24" :(

OK I think I have made up my mind and blown my budget a little too ;)
I quite like the Corsair HX750.
Yes it's over kill for my system, but it has a 7 year warranty! and is silver 80+ rated although from the reviews I have read it is actually a achieving nearer 90+. (the 650w is only bronze rated)
If I choose to xfire or sli in the future it will happily cope with that even with aging.
From what I have read there is very little difference internally between the 750 and the 850 although under full load it tripped out at over 900w (compared to the 850s >1000!)
All the cables are 600mm which suits my needs and I like the flat cables, should make for a mega tidy system.
Ohhhhhh come on!!!!!!!!!!
I'm looking for a car about £12,000???
Oh nevermind i just bought a freaking Ferrari.
lol.

well it's one of the few modular PSUs that comes with 600mm long cables and that warranty is certainly not to be sniffed at!
at the end of the day it can be had for about £100 so £30 over my budget is off set against not having to buy another PSU in say 4 years when a lesser model may have expired.
HI there
For that kind of system I would break it down as following:-
Arianet Stealth 750W, its cheap and it will just about cope, but I WOULD NOT recommend it.
OCZ Stealth 600W/700W, a very good power supply for the money, should handle your system quite easily and without issue.
Corsair TX/HX 650/750, absolute top notch quality PSU's with high efficiency and it would be the PSU I'd choose to put in my own PC.

That's more or less where I ended up, but the OCZ PSUs do not come with a 600mm P4 12v/EPS 12v lead, which for my OCD cable tidying is a must!
The Corsait HX650 and 750 do offer that, but the 750's efficiency tips the balance in it's favor, and as I said above it can be had for not a great deal more than the 650w version

GIMMEREP! :lol::clap
I bought my TX750 with futureproofing in mind, and as no efficiency is lost its a no brainer.
I'm very impressed with it, a plethora of long cables, quiet as a mouse, powerful as that large boat which can ship large stuff.

Lol are you sure you want rep? it might take you out of the red lmao :D
If you're going over budget then you may sewell get the hx850, it's only £15 more than the 750 :)

From what i have seen the 750w gets better efficiency ratings though.
yeah your already spending £20 more to go modular over the vanilla 750, so in effect the 850 would be £35 more.
750 modular gets my vote if you have the extra £20 and are a cable tidying hoar which I know you are :p
Neg rep me then ;)

I can't argue.
Now for the forum members free postage deal ;)

There almost exactly the same, the HX850 does win but it's like 1 or 2 % (not worth worrying about). I almost went with the 750 but the 850 was only £15 more ;)

I just read a review of a pile of PSU's, I think there was a semi modular one that came out on top......can't find the mag I read it in but it was either Custom PC or PC Format.
