Hi All,

Iam back with more stupid questions!

For those of you who helped me with the PC for my hallway and the problems i had with the CD i eventually got i finished. Thanks for the help 8)

Now iam working on another PC for my room again the standard CM-Stacker 810 case because theres so much room for bits and bobs. This time i have purchased an Asus Striker Extreme Skt 775 nForce 680i SLi Motherboard Quad core ready. So this time iam looking for a quad core cpu something with rediculiously extreme power. The reason being i suffer from bad luck syndrome, everything i oc blows up. So as a rule i dont do it anymore. What cpu can you guys recommend? ta

Regards

Jason

If it absolutely has to be quad-core then you have only one choice (quite literally, for now :) ):

There'll be more quad-core CPUs released in the coming months but there's just the one for now. I fully expect people here to recommend dual-core though, after all we're only now getting to the stage where dual-core support is becoming common in applications, it'll be a while before quad-core comes into its own.

You have no reason to get Quad core yet, virtually no programs are baised to run it yet, and also, the Extreme C2D is faster in most tests than the QX because it has a higher clockspeed. Also that quadcore isnt true quad core, it is just two dual sections together both cant communicate with the other. So, for now save the money and buy the more effective for now C2D. Or wait for the real Quad core CPU's.

Isnt it only 2 months before they start to flurry in intel and amd quad cores...?!

I hear, 2 months too, but For the moment you should hold back, The QX is not worth it but the ground up quad core will be.

There's always AMD's \"4x4\", such a cringeworthy name.
Anyway, the reviews are pretty poor, so i'd still say there's only one choice and that's the QX series.
I would, however, wait for the next generation which will be true quad core and not two Core 2 Duos sellotaped together!

well thanks for the reviews guys i'll take your advice and leave the quad core board in its box just now. What can you recommend in the way of dual core? this is going to be my pc and the type of work i will be doing on it will be extreme.

Whats your budget?

For pure raw power and money no issue, an X6800 Core2Duo will blast anything off the face of the earth. Its about a tenner cheaper than the QX6700 you were asking about. Only 2 cores, but they are clocked at 2.93Ghz per core and the multiplier is unlocked - makes it very easy to overclock with a good motherboard and some decent cooling!! A friend of mine had his running at over 4.1ghz stable! 5+Ghz is possible with extreme cooling..

Best bang for the buck at the moment is the E6600 imo. Slower, but much much cheaper!

Theres a Retail Quad core in production now to be released pretty soon (weeks maybe)

Its just a locked down version of the quad core one thats out now, and it will be cheaper. Q6600 i think its going to be called or Q6400 something like that.

Q6600 is the one that's released very soon; effectively 2 e6600s on one die. Trouble is it's expected to ship at £500+ to begin with so can't really be considered a budget option. That may come with the Q6400 but it's not expected until the latter half of the year.

I was just looking at the E6600 actually

I was also thinking maybe an Asus P5W64-WS Pro Socket 775 QUAD CORE READY

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?id=25188

Because its dual/quad core ready i could upgrade it in the future... when i win the lottery !

What do you think?

Iam also looking for some recommendations for a wireless surround sound system 5.1 ish

Some sort of cpu water cooling system that i could easily integrate into my cm-stacker 810 case. Possibly something that could sit where the redundant power supply should sit or or in a 5.25 bay or some sort of mega cooling method thats under £50.

Thats what im doing, quad core board, dual core processor

Gettin high quality ram too, so all i have to replace when the price drops and applications support it, is the processor.

I politely disagree. Photoshop and 3D apps blow the X6800 into the weeds. True its faster in games, minimally so, but that won't be the case much longer.

Even now, the QX6700 at a modest 3400MHz overclock is around 3-4 times faster than an overclocked X6800 in Photoshop running complex filtering. Benchies with 3D apps like Vue, Bryce and Terragen are also miles ahead, even thrashing an overclocked top-end Dual-Xeon system.
