View Full Version : The "overclock my PC" thread
So i want to do a mild OC on my PC, Hardware is an i7 920 and an Asus P6T (Not deluxe:cry) and patriot 6GB DDR3 1600
Its at 2.67ghz standard and want to take it to 3ghz which should be easy on air.
What do i need to change, I was reading that all i would need to do is change the BCLK to 150 and leave everything as auto.
The first problem is i dont get a BCLK option untill i change the Ratio to Manual.
If i do change it to 150 the memory changes to somthing like 18xx or somthing like that.
Answers on a postcard!

What motherboard and ram do you have mate? + the cooling of the cpu too :)

Ahem...;)
Cooling on a CPU is a Noctua NH-U9B with push/pull fans.

Lol.. steady now, its late :P
Right.
Go into "manual" disable speedstep and turbo.
Set memory speed to 1333.
up the baseclock to 143 and set your multi to 21. (may need a Bios update for that, 0602 I think).
That should give you 3.003ghz whitout issue and will in turn run that smidge quicker.
You should be good for speeds of up to 3.8ghz without voltage adjustment on the P6T and not too much heat.

OK, I set it to manual and disabled SS and Turbo.
Set the baseclock to 143 and multi to 21.
I couldnt see where to set the memory, It just give me options of DDR3-XXXX, But the XXXX is not standard memory numbers like 1600mhz etc.
Here is my CPUZ.

What ever the memory is set at how up it from 1144 (or what ever it is) to as close to 1600 as you can be be careful not to go over by too much. (usually 1650 is fine for 1600 tripple channel without changing timings etc).
You can then up your base clock a few more until you hit around 1600 on the memory.
Volts shouldnt need to be changed on anything really except make sure the ram is set to 1.65v (i think its 1.64v on the P6T).

No way, room gets too hot as it is when pushing it. It's like a 3kw heater in the corner of the room.
Cheers andrew, you are now worthy of your mod status:D
Will try and change the memory tomorrow.

why how high do your temps get?
Ok, small update.
Temps at the moment according to Coretemp are about 42max when playing Dirt2 for a couple of hours. Which i think is quite good!
However, GPU temp according to GPU-Z are about 50 on idle after about an hour of it being on.
Im yet to see game temp on that so will try it later.
One thing i have noticed is the PC seems to be a little slower since the OC, It might just be me but seems to take a while to boot up still.
Boot up times have basically very little to do with the cpu speed, yo want faster boot times you will need a faster hdd.
Yup, Waitng for a shipment of SSD at Aria and will be getting a 120GB OCZ vertex;)

Those temps are fine mate. The gpu temps fien too! Most hit 80c if not more. I'd be happy running a 920 up to 80c on air. No higher mind! Bu at 80c your going to be looking at 4ghz or so atleast so it's all relative.

Blistering quick drives but if you want the fastest OS drives money can buy go intel x25m! 160gb drives are about £50 mre than the vertex but worth it! Or fr the same money you can opt for 2x x25m 80gb drives in raid0. That'll give some power (check my review)
Andy
im not sure i could justify the price of an intel as it would be well over £300, And Aria dont list them:p
The speed difference between an vertex and an intel is probably not noticeable for the extra money although the extra 30GB could be handy:o
Looking at the prices its about £320 for a 160gb Intel, I wonder what Aria's price would be if they got them in:D
I could stretch to about £300:eek:
Jesus thats alot for 160gb:o

But it's worth it lol! Even more so if you raid 2 80gb drives! I'm the happiest chap alive when it comes to my computer at the moment :D
