View Full Version : MAME! yeah baby!
Anyone here into classics / Mame?
Built this arcade machine from scratch and took 4 weeks to build and set up , the backbone is based on a core 2 duo e6600 system 2gb ram, 7800gtx, 1tbh hdd (f3 from aria lol), 21" crt, logi 2.1's to handle plenty of stuff system which can handle all the emulators out there, boots straight into the front end and everything is controlled from the control panel, ive included a hidden draw for the admin panel just incase ;), has a spinner and side pinball nudge buttons for future pinball etc...
can easily handle street fighter 4 and more, spent like 3 days adding videos to a portion of the games so a when selecting a game the video preview of the game is shown (before you choose to select and play)
the mame logo on the top was made using prints on transparent ohp paper so looks a little tacky for now :p but i'll replace it later
control panel is based on a x-arcade unit modded and wired (was a good 3 days to do that)
professional tools were borrowed, so I didnt have to spend too much on it
..... so what do you think :)

Lol.. this is brilliant! there was one of these as a build log on bit-tech at one point i sem to remember. Similar specs to what you used too!
Andy
cheers, I built it a while ago but i only changed the hard drive recently from a internal / external (usb) solution to a all out big internal drive, i think mame is like 20gb worth then all the other emulators / games / vids bring it into 600gb worth lol
was a nice challenge as this was the 1st time i did something like this, but it turned out alright :)
i couldnt be bothered with a build log as i just wanted to get it done, i got some help cutting the wood, i didnt want to chop something off with the circular saw ;)
Oh man I SO want come to your house!:D
I couldn't tell you where the nearest arcade is to me. Are they alll extinct?
I have some happy memories of four player games of Gauntlet when I was 13. Great way to spend your pocket money on a Saturday afternoon.
lol yeah this mame machine asks for coins too but there is a button that you press to emulate ...erm coin insertion
i could have/ can put a coin door on to make it more authentic but im happy as it is tbh

I want one!:D
When I was about 8 years old one of my uncles had a fruit machine at home but this just rocks!
The next time I get drunk there is a real danger of me trying to build one.:D

You've just reminded me of an old Paul Merton sketch where he builds his own arcade machine.
Damn that must be about 20 years ago!!! off to youtube to search for a clip.
wow, that is a cool piece of kit :)
DT.
Brilliant build, I had MAME on my old machine but I wiped about 2 gigs of ROMS off to save space. It never got used to I got rid of it. Never went as far as a case etc, I just ran it on my normal rig.
This has got me interested again though, is MAME more stable now? I used to have 1000's of ROMS but only about 100 were really half decent/playable. Might have some backed up on DVD somewhere :D have to look them out now I have more space lol.
SO how much did this cost to build then?
that is superb  some my all time faves bubble bobble, out run, rolling thunder, flying shark, ghost n goblins, gauntlet :D
R-type, sidearms, green beret, 1942, commando.
You sir have awesome taste in games :D
Haven't used MAME for a while, but it was mainly awesome for those side scrolling beat 'em ups that never got ported to console. :)
Simpsons, AvP from Capcom, and plenty of others I can't remember the name of!

mame has developed quite good, there are only like 150-200 games that are no good/buggy and most of them are like majongh or something foregien that no one plays, all the decent games work, all the street fighter series, beat em ups like final fight, king of the fighters, mortal kombat, golden axe, killer instinct series, tekken series (glitches now and then), shoot-em ups like raiden, 1942, aero fighters, others like marble madness, mercs (remember that) :), and thousands of others... and thats just mame
...all the other emulators work too and integrated into the front end Snigger like snes, megadrive, nes, master system, neo geo, mega cd, atari 2600-7800, jaguar, st, commadore amiga, capcom chsp.. and more
far too many to be able to play never mind completing, that will take more than a lifetime lol

ive recently played streets of rage, final fight and golden axe especially in 2 player mode its awesome ;)
SO how much did this cost to build then?
the tools were taken care of
all in all about £600 - £700 i reckon (i dont think im missing anything obvious)
well worth it tbh, the amount i waste in rigs at least this is something useful ;)
only problem with this kind of project there always something else you can do to improve like add guns for virtuacop / time crisis, or a steering wheel system for daytona usa, then mame etc.. is updated every so often so you want to add more systems / emulators
it can go on lol
Aw, Streets of Rage 2 was the BEST. Utterly amazing sound track too, still one of the very best 16 bit tracks. Genesis game though rather than MAME. ;)
Gonna look out my MAME dvd & try get some running at the weekend.
That's awesome :). I have been through a few MAME phases, having dumped a load of cash into the original arcade machines 'back in the day'.
Would love to get a proper cabinet like that set up, but my handyman skills don't really stretch much further than IKEA flatpacks, except for PCs ofc.

Yeah I keep being tempted too, as like a PROPER gaming geek project. That or buying a real pinball machine. But for either I just know I wouldn't use them enough to justify all the space they take up! :( Pinball machines always need fixing too.
mame32 installed on my pc with a few classic roms :D
We posting fave games and high scores??
Can't find my dvd, hopefully shoved it a box somewhere :/
Ooh that is a thing of beauty.
I'm a real mame fan, I've got the complete set and religiously update it every month. I've even got a jamma cabinet at a mates house just begging to be 'mamed' :)

how many discs is the complete set these days?
mame complete set is over 20gb (without the chds ofcourse)

Sorry nft99, I've only just seen your question.
I've just checked and Mame 0.136 with all the the (cmpro checked!) artwork and roms is now 209GB
Of course a lot of the hard disk based games (chd files) take up most of the space.
W.
That's a really sweet setup... been running MAME for a couple of years now, but only on my desktop.
Would love a custom setup like that at some point.
cheers, i'll make a vid to show it action soon :)
Very cool, mucho respect.
Lol :thumb: I remember you posting on another forum ages ago that you were gonna try this. That looks very impressive.
yeah I know, i finished it last summer but couldnt be bothered with a build log
Always wanted my own cabs its my dream to build one of my own one day there plenty of tutorials around the web but I never get down to it...

I main with Bison, I only have it on the PC for now but not played it in the last 3 months, had it on the 360 and ps3 but got rid of them a while ago, might get it again on the consoles when Super sheds some light.
btw I did take the odd pic or 2 in the bare flesh, heres a pic of it in the early stages
I think i have a pic of it when it was all undercoat primed (painted white) somewhere

Very nice Cabinet /)zh I'm jealous compared to mine... Saying that I don't actually use mine that much at the moment. :D
Here is my cheap-o version...
What it started as:

Three weeks later:

Still needs a lot of work:

I had an old PC/monitor etc so just randomly though I'll make a Cabinet as I do love my classical gaming. Overall my setup probably cost about £100 as I managed to get the wood + plexiglass cheap. I only spent 2-3 weeks planning/making the cabinet so it's a bit naff, especially compared to /)zh's cab.
I'm hoping over Easter when I get some time that I can add a draw for the keyboard and mouse, give it a paintjob, smooth off those horrible edges and add a proper marquee (currently using a temp one). You can check out my website for a rough build log with a fair amount of pictures.

Ah great :) Glad I helped.
One of the hard drives died in mine yesterday so I'm going to have to spend some time trying to get it up and running again. Hoping I can make it look a little more professional like your own with my lame handy skills!

There was one in town on Saturday and about 70-80 ppl turned up. Shudda come :)
If I've ever got the spare cash.. I may well be asking you to build one fore me.. it looks great.

where was this at?
where was this at?
At gamerbase in town.
I managed to get to the knockouts (ie last 32) but got leathered by a Balrog player.:mad: Mind you, he had won 2 previous SF4 tournys so my knockout was easier to take. :o
Build me one now!! :chuckle:
Is it possible to buy these anywhere, you know, all the right bits and pre-built with all the MAME Roms in place with a controller that works for all games?
who me? ... if i show you the wiring you'll have a heart attack lol
Yeah and I guess you did lol man I wouldn't dare mess with it if you did the rewiring manually why buy the X-Arcade?? surely it would have been cheaper to buy the bare bones if you knew how to do the wiring?
Great cab.Every time I look at this sort of post makes me want to build a mame cab.Other half does not agree:(.
Great job! Wish I had the space for a cabinet.
I have wanted to build one for years, just don't know where I could put it!
umm wonder if my wife would let me put one of these in our house....

well i bought the x-arcade (quite cheap) 2nd hand
if i was to buy the x-arcade dual stick new it would be silly not to buy it as barebones :p
