Anyone done the geeky thing and turned a Dell Mini 9 into a Mac? Entirely legal (though don't expect any support from Apple), especially if you buy the OS disc like me. ;)

Runs great, especially if you upgrade the internal SSD to a faster RunCore! Not to tricky to do either these days, thought it's best to stick wtih Leopard. Snow Leopard is a bit buggy still though, sound and sleep doesn't work.

Care to make a guide on how you managed it? I made this very same topic yesturday and have failed so far..,

I'm not sure how to do it, but it's more than worth it to test the "It just works" theory!

There were a few guides on youtube the last time I checked.

Andy mate, take a look here, http://www.hackint0sh.org/.

Best palce to go is here (http://osx.mechdrew.com/) with discussion here (http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/general-mac-os-x-discussion/).

Use NetBookInstaller for Snow Leopard, DellEFI for Leopard.

I installed it straight onto a RunCore SSD (http://www.memoryc.co.uk/products/manufacturers/RunCore.html) plugged in via USB, by far the easiest way to do it, but you need a Mac to do that.

Doing it from a PC isn't too much harder though, you just need a USB stick or USB CD drive.

My Hackint0ch is running on an old P4 prescot in an Intel MB, everything works including the on-board graphics, sound & ethernet. sound can be a problem especially with added pci cards ie Creative etc.

the best way to do hackintosh is use generic Intel mobo, intel core 2 duo, same spec ati/nvidia that apple list..... thats basicly what pystar where doing ;) that way it basicly installs and runs just like real mac

Played around with this a couple of years ago. Took me ages to find the right combo of components so it would work properly.

Whats the point? Just a way to get a cheap mac or?

So you can pick your own hardware, instead of being given what apple say you can have. And it would probably be cheaper anyway :)

some times if you get it right its like half the cost of a real mac ;)

the most part is people just do it for a laugh to try,. ... the thing people have against apple is they force u to use only the parts they say are good enough which then adds £x amount extra to there cost when you could just buy something from like aria thats £xx cheaper and put it in your self. but nooooo Apple then start it voids warrenty if you do it your self.

and then consider this for £800 you can only get a Core 2 Duo 2.X ghz mac laptop 13" and i m taking delivery for a Dell 15 " Core i7 for only £700 .... dual core vs quad core with hyper threading :P

So, best way is to make sure you have an Intel CPU / Mobo. What about Graphics?

I tried it with an AMD setup but kept having problems. It installed on my netbook no problem! Intel!

With graphics stick to Nvidia for this. 9400GT Would be just fine.

Great. Would the newer Intel stuff be ok too?

I'm not the best person to ask on Mac stuff:o

But i5 should be ok, but tbh stick to core 2 duo.

I know Apple deffo use 9400GT's, hence the reccomendation;)

Koolpc

Yea, seen them myself. So, Core 2 Duo!

Yeah, Apple's used them for yonks!

Good CPU's too.

well according to what i ve seen on the net Apple not looking to update lines to core i3/i5 if intel insist on putting there GFX onto the cpu ..... so unless intel take the gpu out the cpu no i3/i5 for apple users ... as apple still want to use ati/nvidia gfx cards

which is a pointless arguement as there designed to turn off intel gfx when u use extra addon card .

Andrew Moore

This is what annoys me about apple... You can still use ati/nvidia graphics so what's the problem with it? God it annoys me!!

Even thought i wished apple would allow osx to be used on any pc, i would still stick with windows because i still play alot of games on my pc :)

Yea, but nice to have both on an affordable PC!

Which one of your MANY netbooks ;)

I put OSX on my MSI Wind and it's a fully working system (sleep etc) but the system is a tad underpowered.

The reason for doing it for me is mainly for fun.. I have a desktop with W7, Linux, OSX, and two Amiga OS-clones (Amithlon and Icaros).

Just cos I can really... :D

I'm tempted to try this, but a) I don't fully get how to do it and b) I don't have an OSX disc...I also have no DL discs...

Koolpc

Put it on an Advent Notebook. Used a Distro to do it. Can't get it to work on main PC.

A year or 2 ago I put OSX on my Dell XPS laptop.
The wireless didn't work and the graphics drivers wouldn't install, but apart from that... :-)

I might have another ago now I:
a. have a spare laptop hard disk to play with and
b. think Snow Leopard will be more forgiving of my hardware.

Just buy a mac instead :p

Although I can see why you would do it, Apple really need to bring out a netbook.

An apple netbook would probably cost the same as a mid-range laptop though.

Its the prices that make people use the Apple software on an ordinary pc.

i tried so hard to get it working with no problems but i just ended giving up after spending days on end trying to do it.

i was almost there but it used to randomly crash my pc every now and then and i couldn't get sound drivers to work.

Koolpc
28-01-10, 21:03
What system was that on?

randomowner
28-01-10, 21:10
dell dimension c521
amd 64 athlon x2 5000+ processor with rest of standard dell mobo etc

i might be trying it again when i build my new system if i have any time and feel like it

Koolpc

i was so dedicated to getting it done at first but wasn't really getting far with it

Generally its a piece of pee to get a system up but its the tweaking that becomes a pain like making sleep work or resume from sleep or getting all sound outputs to work. Booting into OSX is easy.

I normally get bored and go back to Winblows

Sleep works fine for me. Just go Leopard rather than Snow Leopard, which isn't quite so well supported yet by the DellEFI stuff.
