View Full Version : e6600 Cooling prob
Re http://www.lucyslair.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1563
I have built the said pc but I seem to be having cooling issues,
I fiited scythe ninja, and cpu temp was at 50ish when idel, I have refitted double checked and its defo secured proper,
I finally give up on that cooler and fitted the stock cooler, ( i cleaned it all off nice :) )
However even with the stock cooler its at the same temp,
Could it be a mis guided temp gauge?
Editted
I havent o/c anything all stock
Thoughts,
Tbh i have given up on the pc atm before i get even more fustrated.
Advice please
They do run a tad warm, mine runs at 40c(ish) idle though that is with water cooling but i have overclocked and overvolted it a touch. It maybe that you have used too much thermal grease? Ideally you only ned to use a spot about the size of a small pea, you can spead it if you want or allow the action of mounting the cooler to spread it (this is what i do).
Reseated and repasted still at 50 :
will running 50 idle cause any problems or likely kill it?
50/c itself isnt likelt to cause problems, but if thats its temps at idle, I would be concerned about what it might hit when it is put under load. Do you know what the full load temps are? If you put the cpu under full load and the temps dont change, then you will know it is a faulty sensor.
I agree with mac that there might be too much thermal paste on there. What brand did you use? Too much thermal paste starts to act as an insulator. The idea behind thermal paste is to fill the microscopic dents and grooves that are in the heatsink and cpu to proved 100% contact. In an ideal world, the heatsink and cpu would be perfectly flat and smooth and would provide 100% contact between the 2. That would give the best heat transfer. Thermal paste is the next best thing, filling the grooves, but the layer should be as thin as you can possibly make it, whilst still covering the cpu.
Also, did you make sure you cleaned off any thermal pad that came with the cooler? :)
Edit: one other thing - you havent changed any of the voltages in the bios?
Re-edit: are the temps EXACTLY the same with both coolers? or are they just around the same figure?

Sorry for leaving it a while to get back here,
Basicly I think I have well solved it,
When I bought my pc I bought 2, One of me and one of my brother ( he paid ;)
The main reason i was concerned is that my cpu temp was almost 15c hotter than his,
Now I reseated cleaned used the stock used a ninja cooler nothing seemed to make a difference, As far as i was concerned the pc's where the same,
However
There was one minor difference, I had updated my bios to the latest version from asus,
so, to test the theory I updated his bios, bingo the same temps are now showing,
Talk about being ****ed Its dam hard getting that ninja fan on these new 775 mb.
Now after running my pc for a few weeks the temps seem to have settled quite nice, the cpu ticks over at 38ish (stock no o/c with ninja fan as described) and goes up to about 48 when given a good hammering,
Can you tell me if possible with a ninja fan what temp the cpu can work at, thinking about overclocking a little bit but want to have a good safe limit.
Regards and thanks for you thoughts so far.
I have an E6400@2.4ghz with an arctic freezer on it, in a very hot office, with 1 case fan. Its been folding at 100% per core solidly for about 3 months now, and the temps always stay around 40/c. Thats with AS5 on it.
