I've found that VLC will handle most, if not all, media. However, I've also found the K-Lite codec pack and the Nemo codec pack to be very useful - basically, they should have everything you'd ever need. For those things they don't have, you can use a programme called GSpot (seriously) to find which codecs you need to play the media file.

Just one thing, back in the day I read about a few conflicts from some of the early codecs - I think they're all sorted now, but probably worth reading around about them.

Have you tested VLC and still need codecs? I assumed you wouldnt

You should be able to find the codec packs through your friendly search engine. I've tended to load up loads of codecs on my pc so that I don't have to worry when something doesn't play in the way I want it to. But VLC is awesome - it even plays Bin files.
