View Full Version : Changing Memory in Vista?
I want to upgrade my 4x1GB memory to 4x2GB will I need to uninstall Vista? In the past I have always needed to uninstall my system 95, 98, Win2000, XP when upgrading my Memory will Vista be ok or will I need to uninstall that too?
Regards...
changing ram or cpu shouldnt effect the os, mobos on the other hand can be pita but for ram you should be laughing.
8x2GB?
Never had to reinstall any os here when upgrading memory?
What board has 8 RAM slots? Your ASUS M3N72- T can only handle 8GB of RAM

Can I ask why you require 8GB of RAM?:)
Well thought 8GB of 1066 ram would be better or is that not the case? 4GB of 6400 is slower so I would like faster games and a faster OS or is it not like tha days of old when you upgrade to more ram you get better performance?

have you used Vista? In a dev machine, with VS, test environments and sql server running, Vista eats all the ram. I've 8Gb in my machine, best purchase I ever made, the previous instal of 4Gb ran so slowly it was unreal.
Should also note, I'm XP-64 base OS, and develop for Vista in a virtual machine that runs like a pig unless I allocate it 'real' ram to the tune of at least 2.5Gb.
I always use Crucial to check what I can install, and then go find hunting for the best timings/price.

8GB or RAM wouldn't ever be used! 4GB is still pushing it!. In terms of speed in games, 4GB is more than enough for gaming. The speed difference between 1066MHZ and 800MHZ is not noticable in day to day tasks or gaming. It's only beneficial in benchmarks and overclocking.
With the price of RAM being so hight atm, I would save that cash and put it towards a more worthwhile upgrade!
EDIT:

I was confirming he wasn't running virtual machines, that's why I asked!:)

I've used vista. I asked the question to see if he was doing any of the things you had listed. I know virtualising a fair bit uses quite a bit of RAM.
Vista itself uses superfetch, so the RAM usage in Task Manager isn't really a good indicator tbh.
how much or our pc do we really require?
wants my man wants is all that matters.
not 100% but wont the amd mem controller down clock 1066 when there is 8gb installed or is that just the older ones?

np, we all get to the point eventually
in terms of OS and games, the increases that will come from elsewhere will be a lot more noticeable. The biggest bottleneck in most systems is the hard drive. What HD are you running and on what motherboard? (motherboard question is so we can assertain if a sata2 pci card would be best to get the most of a new hd)
tbh, a re-install of the OS (or even a win7 upgrade) will probably give you a better increase in performance than a new part, depending on your complete system specs.

Indeed, a fresh install or even a defrag works wonders!:)

I don't see any problems with VISTA tbh... interms of using things it does get a bit slow here and there just thought 8GB would speed these things up. And thought another 4GB would speed up games what is going on these days? Memory in the old days of say Starcraft you buy more the better the gaming now it's all CPU and GPU...

All my machines run vista lol, I love it!
Your HDD is limiting you by far. That's what may make it feel "sluggish".
Get a SSD or a Samsung F3 HDD.
