iPhone 3GS 16GB here.
OT: Tystar, my jailbreak was tethered as it was on the 5.1.x baseband so I just reverted back for now anyway:)
Don't fancy re-jailbreaking everytime I reboot it:p
Cheers!

sounds like you only went so far... once it's done thats it doesnt need doing again.

On the 3GS if you jailbreak and then afterwards if your battery dies or you turn it off then you have to jailbreak it again. My friend at work had this exact problem.
I have a second hand 3G and can reboot all day and keep my jailbreak.
Not had to any of that EVER, i turn mine off sometimes and dont need to re jailbreak it...
Sounds like they've either not done it correctly or they using some strange program to do it.
Friend at work has done his exactly as i did mine which is follow the instructions with blackra1n and his is fine too.
The re-jailbreaking on 3GS is documented on the blackrain instructions so I dunno what you have done :p
only have to re jailbreak it if you restore the phone back to factory...
not done anything other than plug it in press jailbreak and turn it back on.

Plugged it in, Hit make it rain. Installed Cydia, changed root password and that was that. Was that right?:p
yeah sounds about right.
When installing apps there's a walkthrough u need to do first but thats is once it's done once never need to do it again.

Sorry for derailing your thread!:)
i still have my n95, had 2 "upgrades" since that weren't exactly upgrades so i sold one and give the other to the gf.
i like the look of the palm pre but cant make my mind up if its a girly phone or not.
lol i had a look at that before getting the 3gs and decided the iphone was more my kind of phone.
palm pre looks good and all that but looks like it'll take a bit of getting used too.
im not sure, the 3gs is the phone the iphone always should of been but i didnt really like the one i had but that was an older one....i might just keep selling my upgrades as this still does more than i need uless i find somthing a do really like.
get a 3gs, unlock it for free with o2 officially, if you dont like it get it on the bay easy £400 made.

Guess you were lucky and got one of the earlier 3GS which can have an untethered jailbreak.
only had it just over a month
Using a Nokis 2330 Classic on o2 simplicity tariff at the moment until I had decided on a new phone.
Did have the N95 on o2 (sold)

PM Me that too!
I now have a 3Gs 32GB unlocked and jailbroken.
Why need to change the root password, And what walkthrough?
For the root password download MobileTerminal from Cydia.
Type in:
iPhoneName: ~ Mobile$
At that prompt, type: passwd
You’ll be prompted for the ‘old’ (current) password for the mobile user. Enter this as the old password: alpine
You’ll then be prompted to enter the new password – so just type in your desired new password. Use good password principles if possible (long and stong). You will not see characters appearing on the screen as you type – that’s normal, not a concern.
You’ll then be prompted to re-enter the new password. Do that.
You should then be returned to the Mobile$ prompt that you started on when opening the MobileTerminal app. There’s no success message to say the password was changed – but if you’re returned to the prompt and do not get an error, the change was successful. And you’re done with change for the mobile account.
The second primary admin account for the iPhone is called root – so now you need to change that as well.
Type this to switch to the root user: login root
You’ll be prompted for the root user’s current password. Enter this: alpine
Type this to start the password change routine again: passwd
Enter the old password for root (it is ‘alpine’, same as for the mobile user) and enter your desired new password twice, just as you did for the mobile account
The walkthrough is to download an app called appsync (3.1).
But why do i need to do that?
Appsync i understand, But i dont have any cracked apps that ive downloaded.
Unless someone wants to PM me some good ones;)

;)
PM'ed.
Download "Winterboard" (customise iPhone) as in the theme, background, font, colours ect.
"Backgrounder" allows your iPhone to multitask.
SBSettings is an app which shows things like IP address, running processes and is a must. The app wont appear but slide your finger along the top of the iphone (very very top) to bring it down. Themes are also available. It's the one thats just "SBSettings" not "SBSettings Theme" ect.
If your unsure there's definately guides on must have apps as well as how to download them from Cydia ect.
Cheers!:)
p.s: Might want to foward that bit about appulo.us to tystar please as I think he should know after the amount of information he gave me! (He probably knows it though):P
Ah Man, I downloaded SBSettings and it put my phone into recovery mode! Now have to recover it with itunes.
Not trying any of that stuff, I prefer a working phone with proper apps:(

Just been reading about this because i thought it was a problem.
I have a 3GS and only turned it off since the jailbreak and its gone into recovery!
Blackra1n is a tethered JB for the 3Gs so it will always happen.
Tystar, Just must have an older bootrom.
Bit of a shame, When does the unthered JB come out?:o

I'm not too sure there will be tbh. I would wait for the new firmware and hope there's a untethered jailbreak for that one!:)
TBH i dont think i will bother jailbreaking when i move to o2. I cant see enough of a upside to have to connect it to my PC all the time if i turn it off.
If im out and it crashes then im stuffed and will just be carrying a brick about!

Same specs as mine...
once Blakra1n has been installed.. install cydia
then follow instructions below....
HOW TO INSTALL CRACKED APPS:
____________________________
* You will firstly have to Jailbreak your iphone, which installs Cydia.
Google DEV TEAM to find the official torrents
* Then to install cracked apps you will need to:
* Go into Cydia on Iphone/Ipod touch
* Go to manage, then sources
* Add:
(Http://) cydia.hackulo.us/
* Next search for appsync (Mipatch will not work with 3.0) and install onto iphone
* Next add the app to itunes
* Sync your iphone to itunes and add the application
JOB DONE
That is exactly what I have done... no re jailbreaking it everytime i turn it off..
To install apps all i do then is drap the ipa files into itunes and sync and away i go.
So you can understand why i say it usually easy and simple.

There's a box which is due to be thrown out in the hallway. Full of apparent "junk" that Kevin wants rid of. It's full of cables mostly. But one thing I found in it was this:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/pics/6670_main.jpg
So I nabbed it. I charged it up on my dad's phone charger because it takes the same one, and it all fully works. The downside is that there's a whopping great crack across the screen, but the crack seems to have no effect on the display except for the fact that you can see it. :)
Might see how much it'll cost to get it repaired, but I'm not too fussed. At least it doesn't look like a toy, like my current Nokia 5200:

Its an express clip on facia bud that costs about £20 for a nokia one and around £5 off of your local market. You can even get them from **** for next to nothing too!
Andy
I used to have one similar to that. Is the crack across the screen or the plastic cover? if its just the plastic cover, then it was one of those phones that you could change the colours of by swapping out the covers (express-on or something?). Should be able to get a new one for about a quid :)
The WiFi issue on the iPhone is a known problem with some of them. Seems random. Your just unlucky if it happens to you.

It's all across the screen.
Currently I have a Pulse, still on T-mobile but I'm considering whether its worth unlocking.
T-mobile do a pretty decent unlimited internet+texts with a £10 top-up and there's plenty of boosters available too.
Doesn't have such a good battery though.
LG Viewty, Sammy Tocco and Nokia 5800.
lol, almost the same as mine, got an LG Viewty, Samsung Tocco Lite and a Samsung d900i all on the go atm, I literally get up in the morning and choose whichever phone i feel like, (tocco lite for college, pathetic vibrate=quiet in lessons, touch screen=no clicky buttons under the desk :D)
Got an HTC. But since I've seen Gibbo's Iphone; and I want one of those! tied to my contract at Orange for another 11 months though :(
Samsung Omnia i900 but replacing that with the HTC HD2 in march :D

I'm a Sony Ericsson guy. I had an old W810i which I LOVED until I got really drunk and dropped it into a body of water :/
I now have a nice W880i but my mobile phone history includes an old nokia brick that I inherited from my grandmother and...
A SAGEM! which I loved because it was so quirky and disfunctional.

Hmm much easier to sync with the iphone and once you get a iphone you never want another phone....
may be get a unlocked iphone and just put your sim in. although you may wanna upgrade your data tariff if you don't have unlimited data..

I agree the hardware needs sorting but you couldn't ask for more in a phone :p
I'm thinking we start a Iphone section so we can discuss apps and issues etc...
oh and one thing i think would be really usefull is a Aria Forum app...
something that say shows todays posts so you can keep upto date whilst on the move and as so many people on here appear to have them i think it'd have a fair few downloads. :)

Honestly I'm still finding my way around. There are a few niggling things like the way it switches to the mediaplayer if you plug in earphones, but its quite fast and barring the camera excellent for the money.

I wouldnt touch an iphone if I was paid tbh mate, hate em with a passion.
Mate has one and even after playing with it all day I still didnt seem to 'connect' with it at all.
Anyway WinMo > all(except maybe android) :P
Bry.
Android is way better than winmo but i just cant touch anything else after the Iphone...
Trust me i have tried too.
I think when played with properly, you just do stuff by instinct with the iphone and not have to worry about it not doing something coz it just does... helps if it is jailbroken though so you can install almost anything u like :D

WinMo 6.5 is just the same mate, its quite a bit more intuative the 6.0 and having played with the HD2 it seems even better given the faster SnapDragon CPU under the hood :)

I used to hate iphones. I mean absolutely hate. Then I played around with it and was amazed:eek:
The Iphone will probably be my next phone - all things being well.
I'm currently using a SE C510 and it serves it's purpose no more, no less.
Thats the thing, from most phones you always feel like you want more. With the iphone you dont. except maybe a better camera, but for mobile use its fine.

The next gen should fix that. Although, do you have backgrounder (Jailbroken app)? It basically let's you multi-task, another almost certain feature on the next gen.
Nope may have to look for that. Cheers

It's in Cydia if that helps, so only jailbroken iPhones can do it.
Ive used iPhones a lot, and I'm still going to choose a winmo phone as my next one.. I really like my Touch Diamond, even with WinMo6 on it - I've used 6.5 and I prefer it over the iPhone OS. However, I havent used android yet...
Touch diamond is a joke.... i had that b4 i got my iphone back and it was garbage....
Android is defo the next best to the iphone.

The only real thing anaroid is lacking is in the app stores. iTunes has 90k apps not including the jailbroken ones:)
But ofcourse as updates are released Anaroid will improve.
The thing making anaroid so popular is so many phones use it. I mean a £120 T-Mobile pulse runs it where as iPhone O/S is endorsed by only the iPhone. Which ofcourse has a hefty price tag.
Touch diamond is a joke.... i had that b4 i got my iphone back and it was garbage....
Much like the original iPhone... However, I really like it. I wouldnt choose an iPhone over it :)
the touch screen was not the best for me and i it kept locking up on me... had it for 2 weeks it was that bad.
Really? I agree the ipod touch screen is probably more sensitive at stock, but you can change the sensitivity on mine.. And mine has only ever locked up on me a couple of times in 18months.. Which is pretty impressive considering I emptied all my sms folders the other day, and it deleted over 40000 (yes, four zeros!) from it!
must have just had a dodgy 1..
I think the screens the reason i keep going back to the iphone though.
Yeah.. I think I'd give the iPhone another go when it comes to upgrading again, but it'd have to be massively better than the winmo/android equivalent for me to get it. They're a bit big for my liking too..
I've had my HTC HD2 for a couple of months. It's very impressive bit of kit. I thought I wouldn't like a win mo phone, but HTC have done a great job in polishing that particular **** :-)
W.
Iphone 3GS 32GB. With the Griffin Clarifi case. Been invaluable since it's been dropped many many times. The macro lens is alright, but it doesn't slide smoothly at all, but I never use it anyway.
I used handbrake to encode the Dungeons and Dragons animated series for my Pulse and it looks better than watching on tv.
Bit sad a grown man watching 80's cartoons though, so I have to do it surreptitiously.;)
I have a SEW910i, mainly because it works well with my TomTom.
crap phone tbh though, build quality is pap & it keeps shutting off unexpectedly.
Nokia 7600 & Nokia 6260. Using the 7600 because... I like it! :D

Currently Using a hero, only thing that could be better would be the battery life when running Copilot.
HTC Desire now, best phone I've ever had by a long long way.
Google nav is really good, even selling my TomTom Go530 because I don't need it now.
Android 2.2 should be released tomorrow.....then it's a waiting game on how long HTC take to update the phone software.
HTC HD2 best phone ever, with a custom rom ;)
Does everything i need inc streaming live UK TV.
i got a desire today too, very happy with it sofar but i have still to see what it can really do.

My Boss walked past me at work the last day & said "HTC Desire eh, I'm getting one soon too". I was pretty shocked as he seemed stuck on his iPhone.
I like mine, Wish I could get Froyo sooner (aka NOW!!!) for the new features but hey nothing is perfect eh :)
Cue Tystar Saying iPhone is ;)
Nah far from it... which is why i'm waiting for the new OS upgrade.
Froyo is our OS update, a few decent features that tbh I would have thought should have been standard anyway.....like installing apps to SD card, that really annoys me.

I've had an HTC Tytn II for the last two years, my first mobile phone - I wanted it to be like having a mobile PC - it's performed admirably. I've done some quite tricksy things with it (Like convincing the BBC iPlayer it's an Omnia for example) and recently got a replacement extended batt with custom cover.
It's so thick and heavy you could beat whales to death with it.
I'll be getting a Desire and most definitely not an iphone if it kapputs on me any time soon.

I've probably had more than 15 over the years... my first was an analogue brick with a seperate battery pack which I had to clip to my belt.
I didn't find my Nokia slow... it's screen isn't quite as quick as the iPhone, but it's fine for me and far more robust both physically and system-wise than the iPhone. The camera is good, with that great Carl Zeiss lens, it's memory holds 50+ audiobooks and it plays back through my car stereo. I've never had to reboot it and it does everything I want.
My larger clients who have iPhones have had loads of problems, with cracking screens, o/s lockups and short battery life.

TBH bar the Battery Life which is quite common on most smart phones, No issues with anything else on mine.
not really apples vs apples tho that ty, 5800 was nokias reply to the 1st iphone really and i think it stacks up well against it, apple took 3 goes to get the iphone as good as it is today and im sure the n8 will do as well vs the 3gs when they finally get it out.
bat life is an area where nokia exel imo, they dont ask too much of the symbian os and dont bloat it so they can get away with using less powerful and power hungry hardware. i must admit that im charging the desire much more than the n95 and tbh i dont think i use it any more than i was.
anyway the desire rocks :D my screen protectors and case turned up this morning, best £3.90 i have spent on it xD

currently got a nokia E71 on three. it is a cracking phone, well built, and good features, but deffo getting off symbian and onto android next as the desire just blows it out of the water... :weeee

I know i wasnt really trying to compare as they just dont... The Desire is really the only phone that stacks up with the IPhone and as i've not tried one i cant comment.
I've read ALOT about the Desire and am quite tempted to try one but am afraid i'd like it more than my iphone :(

do it. do it. I love the iPhone UI but hate just about everything else about the iPhone (though I am going to do some games for it) but the desire is just all the iPhone pro's with most of the con's removed. ok, there aren't as many apps in the store, but that just means there's less crud to sift through. also no daft random throw-a-six approval process
I actually prefer the Iphone OS over Android.
I had the original Android phone G1 when it came out, I know it's moved on alot since then but just not sure. Also the Iphone has more accessories than the others too. eg. speaker docks etc.

HTC's sense adds a layer over the top, hiding android foundation a little (in the same way they manage to make windows mobile 6.x bearable) and like you wasn't impressed with early android, but seriously, give the desire a spin :)
Some love sense, some also pref stock android. I see a load of folk using launchers to get back to stock android. Think I might try it myself at some point, mainly because when froyo "hacked" I want to give it a go rather than wait for HTC. At least I will be kinda used to how it works then lol.
Gwan Tystar, come over to the dark side ;)
I tried getting my brother to get the desire but he's going with the IPhone.
i thought if he dont like it and it's ok i could have swapped with him but never mind.
Sticking with the Iphone
I have to agree, the Desire is the only mobile which might tempt me away from Nokia. I'd be a bit concerned about the battery life, though, although the car charger will go a long way to allaying that. Out of stock at Orange, at the moment.
I got mine from Orange, if I had the choice over I would get an orange contract from some other place.....Mobiles.co.uk or something.
The main reason being the god awful branding, I don't mind the little logo on the back, I don't even mind the splash screen as it boots up (it's never off anyway) what I really do mind is the fact they filled it's limited memory up with their rubbish apps, game demos & other stuff you CAN'T unistall.
I'm thinking about goldcarding mine & going to a stock HTC ROM, why oh why did Orange do this :(

They install crap on the Desire? My Hero has no Orange apps at all. :D
I have the little logo on the back and the Orange startup splash screen (not an issue as I never turn it off really) and that's it. :D

Nokia N97 + Sim Only Contract (Unlimited Text + 200 mins on Virgin £10/month)
then i have a blackberry curve 8900 which is on works servers so i can get my email when im travelling. Think its unlimited texts and calls + internet, i have no idea but i like to rack the bill up on that one when i go abroad, or so i've been told many times :), i dont get to see the bill.
i then have about 6 different sims for use when im travelling depending on where im going for local rates. I also have an iTouch 3rd Gen 32GB but wish i now got a iPhone. I also love the UI, but have never used a android so i dont really know what is better
Using a Nokia E71 now, best phone I've ever had.
Tempted by the Desire but it's still a tad pricey and I'll miss my qwerty keyboard and amazing battery life.

amazing battery life in an e71???
if i'm LUCKY i'll get 3 days... that's no interneting, no GPSing(the real battery drain) and hardly any calls.
my previous phone got about a week on a charge (ok not a feature phone, a 6310i but still...)
apparently the desire is pretty poor out of the box, but once all the garbage is turned off it's comparable to the e71 (well my e71 as in 2-3 days)
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/htc-desire-679515/review?artc_pg=9
I get about a week on my E71, and I've read in the worst cases some people are getting less than a day on their Desires. Extreme example perhaps, 2-3 days isn't so bad.
GPS does kill the E71 battery though, you're right about that. I also turn off 3G on mine when I'm not in Bristol (3G is good here) as it drains the battery trying to get the network all the time.
That reassures me a bit about getting a newer smartphone, though I don't see how the Desire can realistically get even half the time my E71 manages now, but I guess it's a lot more powerful in other ways.

yeah, if i leave a GPS app running accidentally, the phone will be flat inside a day
Ditto......in fact guess what I did today lol.
I've got an iPhone 3GS. I picked it because the battery life was better than other phones I liked, the screen is big enough to make a decent web browser, and because I have a Macbook Pro so it seemed to make sense to stick with one brand.
I like it, but I'm considering getting another mobile phone next year. I travel a lot, so it makes sense to pick up something that's good for mobile broadband usage and has a powerful browser on its own. A tactile keyboard would certainly be a plus.
Does anyone have any ideas? Android phones would be preferred since I don't like Blackberrys that much.
HTC Hero running Villain Rom 10 (Android 2.1)

Still have a 6230i. Plan on keeping it till it breaks.
Nokia N95 8Gb not the best phone in the world but does the job.
I have a very cheap lg mobile phone. Something that I dont mind getting knocked about or scratched.
A Samsung J700i. It has to be one of the most un breakable phones i've ever had.
:D
Iphone 3G 8Gb - basic but awesome!
HTC hero, love it. Always changing the rom on it though which leads to some mad problems

iPhone 3GS 16GB in black and with vodafone.
Not jailbroken but I think I will jailbreak it soon. I have had to get it sent off for repair (insurance claim) and get it replaced by apple in the space of 3 months so not really a good start haha! ;)

I love orange insurance, not used it in about 2 years, but when my last phone broke(my own fault) I phoned them at 16:30 one day and had a new handset at 07:20 the next morning. £15 quid charge though if its your fault its broken :(
