I'm looking to do a few mods to my PC over christmas, and I need a 3-pin to 4-pin adapter so I can plug a 3-pin case fan into my 4-pin CPU fan power splitter (for push and pull CPU fans).

I just don't get it.

How is that an adapter, seems more like an extension cable with a random 2pin molex connector coming off it :closet

That powers your 3pin fan via molex and provides an RPM monitoring cable too.

so it's not an adapter for a CPU fan cable?

Yes, but it has a monitoring cable too.

So you want a 4 pin cpu cable that goes into 2 x three pin?

YOu can get those on the bay of eeeeeee.

That looks like a 3 pin fan connector which can be powered by Molex/ OR Mobo header.

At least thats what similar connectors I have do!

Nope, that one just powers the fan off the molex :)

It powers one fan off your Molex connecter.. But some motherboards wont start up unless they detect a CPU fan.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w19/adunne_2007/C-CABLE-ADPT_f00.png

Plug number 1, into the molex connector for power.
Plug the fan into number 2.
Plug number 3 into the motherboard fan header to give the motherboard a speed reading.

:)

wouldn't it make more sense to just plug the whole thing into the mobo in the first place then?!

I'm confused! :ss

Aaron

Depends how much current your fan draws.. I've seen mobos die before when they've had a fan plugged in which drew more power than the mobo could supply :)

But yes..

I presume a 3-pin fan can plug into a 4-pin socket?

I just want to have two fans coming off my CPU fan header (for push and pull fans)

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w19/adunne_2007/C-CABLE-ADPT_f00.png

Why is this called a 3pin to 4-pin adapter? Seems stupid :(

no will you dont, it will draw too much and neither will spin @ full speed. this can also be the case if you get a v high rmp fan like a 4k delta or such, they want too much power and just wont spin up at all.

you want one for the mobo header and another from another power source, beit direct to your psu like that conector in the 1st post or via a multi fan controler.

That means I have to add more cables to my PSU which I don't want to do if I'm gonna get a sidewindow.

As marsey says, If they draw too much power either neither will spin up, or you risk blowing the power regulators for the fan headers and taking out your motherboard. Not overly common, but I've seen it happen! Infact, I worked on one a couple of weeks ago where the power section had gone, and taken out the board, and the only thing they had done just before was to plug in a more powerful case fan onto the system fan header of the motherboard..

So guys what do I need if I want to have push and pull CPU fans?

3pin-4pin power adapter
4pin fan splitter
120mm fan

2 fans and a way to plug them both in to thir own power, wethere you use those wires and plug them into a molex or a fan controller to adjust the rpm is upto you but you cant plug them both into 1 set of header pins from the mobo.

hiding the wires wont be that hard m8 just tape them up under the mobo if you have too.

Super-secret option C is to buy a fan controller.

I currently run 6 fans from my 4 dial Scythe Kaze Master 5.25" by using splitters. I worked out what current my fans draw and the fan controller easily supplies enough to do this on each outlet.

Can I have a picture? Looks pretty nice on Google :P

Where can you buy splitters from, and what are their official names as I can't find them on Google.

I'd have front and rear 120mm and x2 120mm CPU fans.

I'm guessing I'll need a fan extension cable for my rear fan.

I presume sensor cables will still need to be plugged into the various fan headers kinda making the whole thing pointless as I'll still need a 4-pin splitter on the CPU connector.

My CPU fan is plugged into MOBO, all other fans into fan controller. Only way to do it.

I use the Nexus fan controller. Turns my four x120's from silent, to 100% (audible but not annoying)

yes but what about if you want two CPU fans?

Aleksandr

3 pin fan splitter cable from one of the outputs, or failing that run a 3 pin splitter cable from the cpu fan output and let the mobo control it, assuming you aren't trying to run deltas on the cooler.

I assume you want them both pwm controlled?

if so what about one of these?

Do you mean one of these?

Akasa AK-CB002 PWM splitter - smart fan cable

takes power from a molex to power several pwm fans and sends a sens to the mobo, iirc.

You CAN also get a 4 pin pwm Y splitter cable too as some fans come with them included, or just google
Gelid PWM Wye "Y" Cable (PWM Splitter)

that should run two fans from the motherboard cpu fan header, again assuming you aren't using high current fans in which case use the molex to 4 pin adapter.

Would that take a 3-pin and a 4-pin fan? or just two 4-pins?

+1

I have my two top blowhole fans running from one dial with the use of a splitter :)

On the grounds that you can plug 3 pin fans into 4 pin headers on the motherboards then yes it "should" be able to power a 3 pin and a 4 pin, however if you are looking to put these fans on a cpu cooler i would recomend against it as they are different types of fan and no guarentee they would be controlled the same, the 3 pin fan might well run flat out due to the way PWM works as it sends the pulse width info down the 4th wire which the electronics in the fan uses to vary the speed.

If one is a chassis fan or both are chassis fans the go for it as from the pic, though it isn't very clear, it looks like it should take both types of fan. As i said before, worst case the 3 pin fan runs flat out.

But not all CPU fans are PWM. My stock AMD cooler does have 4 pins, but I very much doubt it's PWM as its like cheap rubbish 80mm jobbie.

70mm and it is PWM controlled.

That **** splitter will work with both 3pin and 4pin fans. However, they will be different fans, not the best for push pull

Here's a pic for you Will. Tricky to show it off properly.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q196/alexnifty/Computer/DSCF0232.jpg

It isn't PWM though, your only worry with not using PWM is that the fan could stall if you have the volts too low. However the fan controller has an alarm for this.

I use splitters like the one you posted except they are 3 pin. Doing this on 4 of my 6 case fans, all controlled by my fan controller :)

EDIT: I'm not using the temperature probes, so that's why the temps read 0c :p

Ok after some rough and tumble and a few plasters later. I've discovered that 3-pin 'normal' fans do work in 4-pin PWM sockets :D

This finally seems like it's coming together.

I'm going to buy:
Scythe 12cm fan clip (clips fan on to my cooler OBVIOUSLY)
120mm blue LED fan
PWM Y Splitter cable
Coolermaster Elite series sidewindow

:clap and some Artic Silver 5 compound (this stuff is the best right?)

and non of the components are not coming from Aria, because other places offer me free P&P and better price. Also Aria doesn't stock all of the above items :(

Aria can have an RMA for my graphics card instead :p as punishment :) Christmas spirit and all that ;)

What fan? Does it match your current one? If not, don't bother.

Not anymore, get some MX3.

Double negatives, ouch.

so does that double negative mean you are getting that from aria?

ac5 is good but there is better tim out there now.

Yes it's the same Akasa Blue 120mm fan as I have in the front :) and I'm fairly impressed with the MX3. Aria don't sell the stuff or the P&P makes it more expensive than other places :(
