View Full Version : Your gaming style?
I've just completed Red Faction Guerrilla on Casual difficulty, shortly after a mate signed in to LIVE to play COD:MW2 and has already started to unlock achievements on Veteran difficulty. Obviously he just jumps straight into the game on the highest difficulty.
I'm not sure what sort of gamer I am. I would say that I used to be a hardcore gamer because I used to spend a lot of hours gaming, but the definition of a hardcore gamer is debatable. Someone else says I wasn't so much a hardcore gamer because I liked games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario World and Banjo Kazooie, which aren't of a hardcore genre.
So first of all, what's your definition of a hardcore and casual gamer and do you think you're hardcore or casual?
Personally, I think I'm a bit of both. Except for games like Left 4 Dead which require it, I generally don't play many games online anymore, because I don't have the patience to learn the game enough to avoid getting kicked from a server for not playing in the way that the game leader thinks is correct.
For example, in Left 4 Dead, I have been kicked in the past for progressing too quickly. Working on the basis that hanging around causes the game engine to send a horde of zombies after you, I like to keep moving, while everyone else is standing around attracting zombies.
So I've been playing online less and less because when you're new to a game, nobody wants to let you learn the right way to play online, so I just stick to the story mode. But now I don't really have the patience anymore to play on an annoyingly difficult difficulty, so I'll play on casual or normal most of the time, complete the story, then move on to the next game. I'm not sure if that'd be considered casual or hardcore, because I still put in a lot of hours gaming, and typically prefer action games and FPSes.
So that's basically my gaming style: jump into a game which provides a good enough challenge without being annoying, playing through to the end and then moving on to the next game. I don't often go back to a game afterwards except for when I just fancy playing it sometime.
What's yours?
I usually play a new game on Normal/Above Normal unless it is something in a genre I know I am good at, like FPS, then I will generally go for Hard/Harder mode straight away because I know Normal will be too easy.
I’m a bit like you where I play game to the end then don’t go back to it unless I really fancy playing it.
Like at the mo I’m replaying MGS4 (PS3) which is a top game :)
As for online gaming I don’t really do it anymore apart from the odd few hours on Mario Kart and Fifa stuff like that.
I use to play Counter Strike Source but not since I got rid of my gaming PC.
There was a low time in my online gaming when I tried WOW (sorry) for a few weeks but then snapped out of that.
As for the Donkey Kong, Super Mario World bit there just classic’s that have to be played.
I don’t know how many times I go back and play Streets Of Rage 1, 2 and 3 (best games ever) and I’m still playing Sensible World Of Soccer which I still say is the best football game ever made.
tbh i think that puts you in the hardcore end of thye casual pool and nift in the cas end of the hardcore pool which is about where i put myself these days.
i would say that when i was a clan player and was doing the competative gaming i was alot more hardcore than i am today but im still everybit as good :D
must admit tho unlike what you are saying about online play i used to enjoy helping people from tha casual pool learn how to keep their head above water in the hardcore pool. in the older cod and bf games more than others tho, but that was only if i was playing on my clans server, if i was trying to pwn another clans box i would be a leetist bar steward.
if you find yourself playing with fake banjos or drum kits and pretending to bowl with a remote then you are in the puddle end of the lame gamers pool :D
I was talking about the old Mario and DK games, back when DK had good adventures and not these crappy bongo music games.
Casual Hardcore, I like it!

I play The Sims3 :)
Just gotta luuuurve that game! I have fun making babies and cleaning the kitchen, which is pretty damn hardcore if you ask moi!
Mmmm, hardcore gamer, but not in the "become the best online and complete everything on hard", more I like to complete A LOT of games. I'm a completionist, I don't care about collectibles or gamerscore, I care about the next game.
Of course, this completionist streak hit a giant brick wall when I played WoW for a while, lol. OOPS!
Whenever i play online FPS games, i like to move slow and keep moving. Never camping cos it really ****es me off when people camp. If you kill someone, move away from that spot because 9 times out of ten the person you killed will go there to try and find you :P

Haven't played online games in a while, but the last one i did, CS: Source, i like to run around a lot with the pump action shotgun.
There was no point playing it safe with the shotgun. Best just to go after the other side :)

Shotgun bunnyhopping 4tw! When I get frustrated in any game I always break out the shotgun to get up close and personal. Suddenly switching to charging at the enemy like a loon sometimes catches them off guard.
i used to love it when people did that, or run at you with their knife out after you have stabbed them :D
easy headshots :D
im still trying to get all the stars on spec ops in mw2 in solo mode.
I love to run and gun, but when i'm in a more tired mood i'll snipe. I'm lethal at both. :P
I need to be in the mood for camping. I'm much more run and gun as you say, in BF2142 I recently unlocked an assault rifle, cloak generator, and remote detonate explosives. It is unbelievably satisfying to sneak up on enemy armour, plant explosives then explode them.
It really annoys me on games like COD:MW2 where your playing a game most such as domination...all fairly familiar with the game play right? Anyway it's dead annoying when people just play it, likes its a normal TDM or FFA trying to get high K: D when it's like ok we're loosing here...sacrifice yourself if it means we win. I play to win really, I loose a fair bit on team games as I also seem have a ****e team that just play game modes such as domination like a TDM. I win about 90% of FFA games unless I'm up against some 10th prestige lv 70 guy :p
I don't play the game alot as I get bored fairly easily...bought it on the day of release and my game time (online) is 1 day 6hours :)
I play hardcore games, but I can handle games running slow (due to poor hardware) and don't play for hours and hours as it's just a waste of time ultimately as you don't actually accomplish ANYTHING :p
Will just stalks me on MW2 :p

I've never got a 25 kill streak  not even unlocked the nuke yet.

Re Red Faction - what did you think and how many G did completing on Casual get you?
I love the Red Faction games, the first most and just picked this up to add to the pile of "must play" games :)

Jesus man, how do you even do that? i'm proud if I manage, like, five. :/

My best is 14 I think.
I swear though every single time I get a predator missile somebody is always there to kill me...and I always get put onto the loosing team. I think I've won 20 games and lost 122 games....wtf. I was told it's because people leave if their loosing and so you get put in to replace them....:thumbsdn:
Another thing that really annoys me, is people who place Domination and just play to get a good K : D...play FFA if you want to get a better K: D.:redface::mad:

It's realy good fun, but I personally prefer the first one. The first one allowed you to destroy everything unless a certain object was explicitly set to be indestructible. In RFG, it's the other way round. The ground isn't destructible and your in an outdoor world, where only vehicles and buildings can be destroyed.
It has a few graphical and physical hiccups with the GeoMod II engine but is still pretty good fun.
You don't get gamerscore relative to difficulty setting. You just get the gamerscore for liberating each sector. Completing the tutorial and liberating all sectors adds up to a total of 260 G.

Which one, the original UT?
Completely forgot about BioShock 2 coming out in February. I never bother pre-ordering though usually.
I think I'll wait for the price to come down and then get the collector's edition. I've suddenly became very addicted to game merchandise. Even though I don't actually have any except for the Gears of War art book and making-of DVD.

No 3 Although i do have the original too. I bought the pack off Steam ages ago when it was Cheap :clap
