My brother who's been complaining about a crap network connection for years has finally accepted that homeplug > wireless.

hmmm, homeplug greater than wireless?
great if you want a proper network with ya neighbours
Wireless is probably a little more secure, for now at least (http://books.google.com/books?id=mSMsqoqufMoC&pg=PA120&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q=&f=false)

Mum wouldn't let him have a 10m ethernet cable trailing up the stairs.

The neighbours are all using wireless. I don't think a lot of them have heard of homeplug. There's a lot of controversy about the security of homeplug anyway. Many people say anyone on the national grid can access your network, others say only if they're on the same mains ring.

Is homehub traffic not encrypted? If it is encrypted then surely it is as secure as wireless.

I belive its the same substation , so probably yours and a few other roads

I followed the Tech ages ago ( 10-12 years ago ? ), for Power companies becoming ISPs, they did some trials at schools, but found that it was a bit of a security/privacy nightmare. apparently streetlamps became transmitors !!

Why wouldn't encryption work? Surely they must have thought of that. It wouldn't be any worse than WiFi.

You can set up encryption, but the software to do so only works on XP. Also the two plugs that he bought don't seem to work with mine, so we have two homeplug branches on our network now: one for me and one for him, running separately. There are two adaptors by the router now.

I have 20 metres of UTP cable around the side of my house, from the NTL box on front of house and in through the back bedroom wall :D
