probably the fact there is a GTS 240 1gb graphics card with an £750 system!

what on earth is a GTS 240 LOL :chairfall:

coiler

The dearest one on that page with @ £1099 with "Excellent graphics capability, " has a GTS 240 too :cop: Some even have a GTS 220. :ss

haroon

Lol, I don't think anyone has heard of those video cards, unless there is an sku that only dell knows about.

Could they be 8400's mounted on a 9800gtx PCB? :p

Well in thier defence,

i7 920 £200
X58 Mobo £130 (cheap one)
3GB RAM £50

Call it £400 with a decent board.

Vista £70
Hipro OEM PSU £50
Graphics £60
500GB HDD £35
DVD £15

So thats £630 without case, throw in a years support and someone to build it £750 ain't too shoddy really.

But this is an XPS system, which Dell are selling as a performance machine. With that GPU it just aint.

Fair enough, i am just feeling abit argumentative today.

coiler
15-10-09, 13:02
For a "graphics performance" system the first thing which needs speccing is the GFX card, then build around that. Dell fail at this.

wonderlust
15-10-09, 13:05
surely the Fail was Will looking at Dell "perfomace" PCs? ;)

coiler
15-10-09, 13:10
doesn't Will have a soft spot for dell after his Dell Hacksaw GFX card Mod?

Jiggles
15-10-09, 13:34
Well Dells are for those who cannot spec a PC to save them selves! I still have my first ever PC which was a Dell... Still going strong albeit with some hacks. :D

wonderlust
15-10-09, 13:42
Don't get me wrong I am not a Dell Hater.

Some of their monitors are very good.

I wouldn't be with out either of mine ;)

Aaron
15-10-09, 13:46
You can occasionally get some quite good deal on midrange dells which would just be used as a basic workstation, but I agree their 'premium'/gaming PCs leave a lot to be desired!

Well Dells are to save them selves!
Dell (or insert the name of most other large PC builders) new marketing tagline:

"Dell. For those who don't have a clue, BY those who don't have a clue..."

Have x2 Dell ultrasharps at work and a very nice Dell ultrasharp at home, 19" with a TN panel which seems to give the colour and viewing angle of a PVA. Very impressive.

15-10-09, 15:24
what??? dell suck?? well i never

the gts 240 is a 88/98gt to the gts250 as the 88gts/98gtx.

I would have given a proper reply, but you spelt performance wrong so neh

I've got a new Dell laptop for under £900 and it's good enough for gaming. Except for the dead pixel in the center of the screen :'(

Return it.

Will

Return it.

I don't think they'd accept it for only 1 dead pixel

PeterStoba
17-10-09, 21:51
They operate a no dead pixel scheme on their monitors, why not laptops?

Lynx
18-10-09, 10:29
Iso limits are about 5 dead pixels, and 5 stuck pixels.

alexnifty
19-10-09, 11:05
We already checked and for laptops they follow the ISO standards. Katie is happy enough despite her dead pixel.

Desktop was out of the question because it had to be portable.

coiler
19-10-09, 11:30
Send it back on 7 day distance selling act, then get another.

alexnifty
19-10-09, 11:34
I suggested that but Katie is happy enough with it, can't be bothered with the hassle. You can't notice it when playing games anyway.

Will
19-10-09, 17:40
When you notice you've got a single dead pixel you also know you are VERY BORED.

Aaron
20-10-09, 16:33
But - When you DON'T notice a single dead pixel glowing bright white on an otherwise completely black screen, you know there is something wrong with your eyes..

black background = less work for the GPU/Monitor/CPU IMHO

Aaron
20-10-09, 17:24
Potentially saves power too! having 1600x1050 pixels all switched on and displaying white surely uses more power than them all being switched off and showing nothing?

My little friend the dead pixel is black and is always noticeable on Firefox. Nifty and I hoped it was a bit of dirt on the monitor glass at first, but it's too stubborn to budge.

Yes obviously, but a desktop is not the same as a laptop, and if my auntie were a man, she would be my uncle.

Have you tried any of the fixer utilities.. They dont always work, but I've had some limited success with them.. Also, just even rubbing your finger across it hardish can sometimes work..

coiler
20-10-09, 20:54
a pixel exerciser got rid of my single green pixel on my Hyundai

Aaron
20-10-09, 21:02
Yeah, I think it depends on the reason for it sticking.. I couldnt get one unstuck on my PSP, but its worked on a TFT I had..

Will
20-10-09, 21:09
Katie are you a business woman that moves around alot...from meeting to meeting?

Wait LMAO I just had to best "vision" image at some meeting...say meeting the CEO for the BBC and they're all there with there laptops and somebody has some Dell XPS laptop with blue flashing lights :chairfall::chairfall::chairfall::clap

Sorry just found that hilarious :chairfall:

wonderlust
20-10-09, 21:16
You may laugh but my ex boss had a 17" XPS as his work laptop.

With all the fancy lights.... sooner him than me it was very very heavy

alexnifty
20-10-09, 21:22
This little black dot appears to float in front of the actual pixels. If you move your head from side to side then it moves in relation to the image so it is above the pixels.

Some odd fault with the glass or some layer above the colour layer of the pixel or something...

Doesn't wipe off and you can't feel it.

coiler
21-10-09, 11:38
I remember a user on here had a small fly stuck behind the panel, someone asked him to take a screenshot :surprised:

Aaron
21-10-09, 11:39
That was PP - it was a proper bug!

Aaron
21-10-09, 11:39
no pun intended...

alexnifty
21-10-09, 11:40
This isn't a fly, it is a proper black square which floats above a pixel which changes colour normally.

coiler
21-10-09, 11:52
That was PP - it was a proper bug!

Did he manage to "remove" it or was it a RTB job?

Aaron
21-10-09, 12:36
I dont think he managed to get it out, as it was actually sealed into the panel during manufacturing as far as I remember.. But the manufacturer wouldnt accept it back as they thought it had happened because he had opened it!

I wish :) I spend frequent evenings over at Alex's house so it's nice to have my own machine there. We played Machinarium mostly in bed last Sunday, is that really sad or romantic?

Also much easier to take to LAN parties because I can barely climb three flights of stairs without puffing, let alone carry a desktop system downstairs to my car.

Wait LMAO I just had to best "vision" image at some meeting...say meeting the CEO for the BBC and they're all there with there laptops and somebody has some Dell XPS laptop with blue flashing lightsThose people would probably have Macs! My laptop is thankfully less flashy than the XPS gaming range:
