If I bought this card for a media centre pc, this card has a dedicated HDMI port. So I could simply use a HDMI to HDMI cable, would the GFX card handle the sound, or would I need to connect an internal cable to take the sound from the mobo to the GFX card?

Isn't there a cable which you connect fron graphics to M/B or sound card for sound through HDMI.

The HDMI cable will handle the sound fine. upto 5.1 i believe.

only AMD cards have their own sound chips so a cable to the sound card will be needed

The graphics card should have come with a SPDIF pass-thru cable. It should look like one of these:

One end goes into the graphics card, the other to the SPDIF out header on your motherboard (assuming you have one).

Ahhhh cool so it really is that simple then.

But an ATI card would have the magic on the card and override your onboard / seperate soundcard?

Next question whats all this HDTV port some cards have? it looks like an S-video?

An ATI card has a sound built into the card, but it wouldn't take over any existing cards you have in the system. You would need to tell windows that you want to use the ATI sound system as your primary soundcard.

And the HDTV port does look like an S-video port, where you would plug component cables coming from your TV. It looks alot like: http://www.compupack.com/photo/hdtv.jpg

It's a 7-pin mini DIN. It'll accept a standard 4-pin S-Video connection as well as component video (YPbPr) usually supplied as an accessory cable with the graphics card which will usually do up to 1080i. None of them carry sound.
