View Full Version : Latest bot attack
This has got to be the single worst bot attack i have ever witnessed, and i am pwerless to do anything about it, currently it has almost filled a page of the forum all by itsself.
More mods / admins needed imho as this type of stuff it is posting is way out of order.
Just incase it gets cleaned up before you all get a taste of what i did here's a wee screenie i took. I wont post the content of the bots (i assume its a bot) posts suffice to say its VERY racist and VERY ofeensive.

I deleted them directly from the database - let's hope I didn't corrupt anything
I've added the Visual Confirmation to the registration process but I can't seem to get it to work (showing broken image). I've disabled it for now and will have one of the php guys look at it next week.
I've increased the min time between posts to 2mins as well as a temporary measure until it's up and running.

yeah some of the comments have been comedy.. Its almost worth just editing the original post but keeping the thread! hehe!

although, I get the impression that the threads arent actually deleted, but moved to a restricted area of the forum. Theres been a couple of times when ive been replying to one, hit submit and then been told that I'm only allowed to post in that area if I have 'Special access powers' or something. So I think they do still exist. somewhere.

Is anyone deleting these errant signups? Looking in reverse order on the memberlist reveals member after member with porn links, pharmacy links, etc as their website. Some spam bots don't spam, they merely register so that the googlebots come by and pick up the links for a higher overall page-ranking.

[quote:7f199c1a68=\"PrivatePyle@Work\"]Calling all forum gurus..!
Just wondering if it is worth pursuing e-mail verification of new accounts in an effort to at least stem the amount of spam bots on the forums? Will this process actually cut many of them out? I know we've had the conversations before, but now that a few of us are modding it might make progress a little easier to facilitate.[/quote:7f199c1a68]
I don't think it'd do any harm, most sites use e-mail verification these days.
How many spam bot attacks it'll cut out though, I don't know.
[quote:a1a2c08c7b=\"ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ\"]Aria already uses email validation?
My forum does...and I get more then aria...so wont cut any i doubt [/quote:a1a2c08c7b]
You use Invision Board too, which is better.
Because phpBB is free, and Invision Board costs $149.99 :P
I'm using Invision 2.2.2 and I don't get any spam bots through the net.
