I have a strange problem with this hard drive which is 18 gb, When I select to defragment the drive it just makes an almpost regular noise like it is starting to defragment but never shows any progress on the screen, it doesnt even show from 1 % onwards...yet it boots up oK when the computer is switched on, runs the programs, I even got it to do a scandisk which came back with no errors, yet it still wont perform a defragment. I even changed the program in windows to another copy just in case but it still goes on making noises but not doing anything??
The machine is running at 466mhz, 128mb ram, op sys windows 98se.
Any advice would be most welcome thanks..:-)
I would try remvoing the hard drive, and try doing a disk defragment with the hard drive set as a slave.
Or
Middle of this page is a load of Defragmenting programs, try one of them.

Thanks for the info, I will try setting it to a slave and see what happens...also I'll check out the web page if I dont succeed with the former...:-)

Hi, Thanks for the advice, I set the drive in question as a slave as I have the other drive set on a card to allow me to use larger capcity hard drives, so as I can boot up from this drive and the other one is set as a slave on the machines bios I then defragmented the aforementioned drive...thanks again.... I wanted to use this drive as a boot up drive and the other one for storage as it is 40 gig...so when I think the smaller one needs defragmenting I can reset the bios to boot up from the larger drive as I have windows 98 se loaded on that one as well..:-) err a bit confusing but it does work..:-) The other reason to use the smaller dirve as a boot up drive is that it is obviously an older drive though as I said before it does work ok, well it has so far..:-) anyway thanks again and for the quick response...;-)
Complicated :P
Gald you got it sorted matey

Maybe I should explain my set up...I have one hard drive (18 gb) running from the machines own bios as a slave and another of 40gb running from its own bios on a ata/100 controller card...both drives will boot up the machine, the 18gb is set as a slave whereas the 40 gib is set as a master on the card, ( not sure if I need this card on this machine? ) anyway thats how I have it set up, now in the machines bios as you know it is possible to set what drive you want to boot the machine up, so setting it to boot from scisi it then boots from the 40 gb drive, although the other one is set as a slave it will still boot the machine up if I set the bios to boot from drive C.
Anyway I did manage to defrag the 18gb drive although when set bacvk to a boot drive it still wont defrag...so I guess now and then I will have to swap them over whilst I do a defrag on the 18gb drive. ;-) Does that make a little more sense? ;-) all good fun isnt it..:-)

[quote:2650ec327f=\"PrivatePyle@Work\"]Yeh I groan everytime i see Win 98SE at work :([/quote:2650ec327f]
Dont groan too much as I have win xp Home on my other machine and my wife has win XPpro on hers...:-) but I also have win 3.1 on my old laptop...err so old it failed the 2000 year test;-) up to a little while ago I still had my really really old XT computer runnning MsDos 3.3 , sadly the hard drive bit the dust....but it still boots up but with no hard drive.. I had win95 and then I upgraded to win 98se on my other machine...I won it from Micromart some years ago, that too went up the creek so I gutted what was worth keeping and stuffed it into this other machine. ( that was where the ATA /100 card came from as the machine wouldnt cope with larger hard drives.) Anyway whats wrong with Win98se..?? ;-) firm I used to work for used it on some of their computers as the new machines wouldnt run some of the programs they needed to use.
You shouldn't need the IDE card.
Just set one drive to master and one to slave and let them share a IDE cable.
Obvisously the one you want it to boot from you set as master.
But if it aint broke, dont fix it :D
Well mate if you wanna run a defragment on your hard drive then try using one of the programs i posted earleir in the thread.

Just to bring you up to speed on my progress..following your suggestions I managed to defrag the h/drive (18gb). I have now installed WIN XP Home on the H/drive that is running from the card, ( 40gb drive) actually I should have known that this machine may not have needed the ATA/100 card but now I guess I have the advantage...? as I can boot up and then select either win 98 or win XP.....good eh? thing is that I dont know how long this smaller drive will last so I am taking no chances...well thats my excuse also some of my stuff probably wouldnt run on Win XP...? I've still to get the audio across to run on XP so who knows that might not work either...once I can find out what make and model the audio is as it is integrated on the motherboard I can then get a driver ( hopefully ) for it to run on Win XP.. I'm also thinking of putting a DVD drive in as it already has a cd read and write drive....you have to bear in mind that I was brought up on meccano and balsa wood models..:-)
