Dear all,

it turns out i was a bit too hasty with my upgrade last year. basically due to financial constraints i decided to upgrade but not go the route of PCI-E and kept my AGP board.

I am now faced with having to overhaul my mboard, g card etc etc. what i was wondering though is, would it be possible to port most of my stuff over? i have a 939 gigabyte board with a AMD 64 3600+ (i think thats the chip). Are the new dual core AMDs based on the 939 socket or should i really be looking at the new AM2 socket?

I am a touch confused as none of my usual mboard manufacturers websites seem to have an obvious flagship model that makes my decision as to which board and socket nice and easy. your help on this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

tim

cheers for the speedy reply and clear advice. i was worried that that would have to be the case.

looks like i am going to have to take the plunge. i assume the new am2 core will require some new form of more expensive ram just to top things off? anyone got any suggestions for decent am2 boards? i hav been a loyal gigabyte man in the past and havent had any problems but perhaps the new year/socket should bring a change in my allegiance?

thanks again. had heard that intel had finally remembered how to make good processors but must say i just assumed it would force me to remortgage my house to be able to afford one! will have to go and have a cheeky scan of the intel offerings now. i think \"snowballing\" might be an apt description of my current predicament!

still thanks again

i must admit i have been playing a lot of games recently but during busier times i tend to use it for web design and a small amount of programming. i already have a large case (CM stacker) and a 550w psu plus HDD and CD drives so isuppose if anyone did have a spec for a decent(ish) system i would be most appreciative. being ever so slightly frugal i dont mind having to stick more ram in later to keep costs down or indeed getting an entrance level cpu with the option to upgrade later. I await your thoughts with glee/anticipation!

I have a dual core X2 in 939 flavor and my mobo has agp and pci-e 8) as well as an upgrade slot for the AM2/ddr2 flavors
