View Full Version : ram trouble
At the moment i have a acer laptop with 768 mb of ram, with being 256 and the other being 512 mb. It came with the 256 stick and i upgraded it at a later date, ever since i upgrade the ram my laptop with just crash and restart it self when i do some think with uses a lot of momery, so i have taken the 512 mb stick of ram out and it now works fine. Can anyone tell me why this is happening, I am a noob at a lot of this stuff so any help would be helpful to me. Cheers ben
Hi Ben,
Sometimes you can get lucky with unmatched memory, but in your case i guess not. It is normally better to use matched pairs of memory modules (sticks). Have you tried just the 512MB on it's own to see if that is ok?
It is important to ensure that the memory is compatible with your laptop. I would check what memory you already have by visiting the Acer website and looking at the spec for your particular laptop. If the 256MB memory module is PC2700 SO-DIMM and you stick a 512MB PC3200 SO-DIMM in your laptop, it may not be compatible, hence the crashing.
If the 512MB works fine on it's own, then i would use that and sell the 256MB in your local rag (you should get £20-£25 for it). With the money you get for that, you could always use it towards buying another 512MB!
If you get confused or stuck, post here your laptop model and the specification of the 512MB stick that you added, someone here will be able to assist you i am sure.
Regards,
Colin.
