After finalizing everything and making sure they all work together, this is what I've got now. Much better and a better value for money than the last one.

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/6444/newrig.png

Comes in at £399.67 inc. VAT.
CPU is £83.27 btw.

Forums won't let me edit for some weird reason so I'll post here.

4850's tend to be hot GPU's, idling from 40-60 and reach 80-100 under load. I hope nothing bad happens, anyone know where I can get aftermarket coolers from?

Who are you and what have you done with coiler?!

EDIT: I am actually tempted to buy a couple of those just to see what all the fuss is about (even though I don't really need to).

I read somewhere that they dont put strong fans on 4850's cause they were made to run under that heat. Although if i get a vortex neo they will run fine at acceptable temps. The 4770 is ok but 4850 is better, I figured that after alot of researching. A big downside is 4770 is 128bit.

what do you think of that, better than a 4850?

El Wayneo
08-07-09, 17:36
About the same, they both win in some, lose in some really.

Palit GTS250 has much better cooler, you want one that vents the air out of the case.

I would get a 4850 then spend £16 on a Vortexx Neo.

Yeah I think I'll do that. Where would I get one from? :) I take it that it wouldn't be hard to change it right.

by the time yove spent £16 on the Neo you may as well buy a GTX 260 @ £99ex!!! runs VERY cool and blows away a 4850 :thumbsup::thumbsup::lol:

Depends on the games to how much better each card is, try tomshardware.com for the gpu charts, gives you the lowdown.

Gainward 4850 is good card and cheap, look on fleabay for a Vortexx Neo,

Both of those still don't add up to £90, let alone another £25.

Well if one of these gets in stock I'll get that, otherwise I'll go ahead and buy the gainward and get a vortexx neo.

I just found some other site, where I'm going to buy most of the stuff now. Its pretty popular and saved me 50 quid on basically the same stuff. An arctic power 500w psu is good right? Arctic is a good brand, what I always thought.

Still gonna buy the HDD and GFX card from here, nobody can beat a 4850 for 70 quid.

Price went from 402 > 353, with free shipping :)))
:chairfall:

El Wayneo
09-07-09, 18:05
I would still get a branded PSU, arctic power aren't well known for their awesome PSUs.

If you have saved £50 on the build then don't be tempted to skimp on the PSU as well, get a good one.

busman3000

K, decided to go for an
Antec Basiq Power 500W PSU - 20+4pin 2x SATA 1x PCI-E 5x Molex

That's better, roughly the same price as this. Which one would be better?
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/500w+%2B/OCZ+500W+StealthXstream+Power+Supply+PSU+?productI d=29090

total £369.25 now. Might even go up another 15 quid for an XFX 4850 cause they have better coolers than the rest.

El Wayneo
09-07-09, 20:15
Yeah the antecs are good.

If you're budget was £400 and you've got what you need for £350 then spend the rest on little upgrades.

Don't forget thermal paste and some case fans aswell.

busman3000

Is nail polish/varnish remover good to remove the stock paste?

Advise me of the best paste to use please <3

Btw my budget was 350, but I went abit over it, glad to be back to where I was. It's around 370 now. :S

El Wayneo
09-07-09, 23:45
Personally i use OCZ freeze paste, did my own tests and it beats arctic silver 5 by 2 degrees.

But articlean is best for removal, i wouldn't bother with nail polish remover.

alexnifty
10-07-09, 00:23
If your not going to use arcticlean then use Isopropyl Alcohol (available in spray cans, just search for Servisol IPA 170). However I have used both and arcticlean dissolves thermal paste away much more easily than alcohol does. Alcohol is best for general cleaning.

Nail polish remover might have nasty stuff in it like perfumes, colours or something, that could damage your cpu - I wouldn't use it.

What the +12v rail on the Antec?

(just had a look at the antec, if its the same price I would go for the OCZ. better reviews, more SATA, more enthusiast, the Antec is flat out mid budget range)

+1 on the OCZ freeze extreme paste, cures instantly and is deffo better than arctic silver. +1 on the isopropyl alcohol, use it for so many things.

Is this ok for cleaning?

El Wayneo

Yeah its pretty much the same stuff as articlean, just dip the end of a cotton bud into it, then just go round in circles until its gone, will probably take 3 or 4 goes.

Everyone has their own opinion and their own way of applying thermal compound, from covering the cpu in it to just drawing little lines.

I used to draw lines, but from reading lots of CPU reviews all these guys just put a small pea sized amount in the middle of the CPU, if its good enough for these guys then its good enough for me.

Plus I don't really like the idea of buying over the internet, alot more hassle when stuff breaks down.

busman3000

Depends on where i buy it from. The place I'm looking at don't
reimburse your reasonable return carriage costs if an item goes faulty within the years warranty, they only give a repair.
