Looks good to me, I was just wondering about the need for 1066MHz RAM...

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR2/DDR2+800+%28PC6400%29/Corsair+4GB+PC2-6400+C5+XMS2+%282x2GB%29+?productId=36960

:) Had this RAM running at 1066 and saves you £6 :p

I don't plan on OC'ing, don't know too much about it anyway. I guess i'll just stick with the 1066 :D

Looks very good, can't fault it really :D

That is a Phenom 1, they are slower clock for clock than phenom II's and run hotter. Go for a PHII variation, for 70 ish you can get a Phenom II 505 or whatever and it will be miles faster for 1 less core.

+1:thumbsup:

(ignore my comment about the RAM :))

Bear in mind I did have to RMA that PSU you bought, and bought a 600W ProXStream instead, as it was squeeling :p

Can't get it from Aria tho... :(

Gonna stick with the X3

Maybe in a few years if I need to I'll upgrade the CPU to something newer :P Should hopefully work in an AM2+ board :)

I just thought, your not planning to game on that CPU are you?

busman3000

Err... yeah. World of warcraft, maybe some others aswell like strategy games, maybe some racing games. So yeah. But I plan on doing some video encoding and image editing too :S

The x3 parts are not quite so powerful, and have less overclocking headroom.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=90&p2=24

Even the X2 7850 will beat it.

Hmm. I'll look around. Any cpu's you'd recommend?

http://forums.aria.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10939
Asked a question similarly before. X3 won it.

I could get this though... What do you think?

I would get...

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/AMD+Phenom+II+X3+720+Black+Edition+2.8GHz%2C+Socke t+AM3%2C+Retail+?productId=35330

Awesome CPU, much higher stock clock (as your not gonna OC). The third core would be a huge improvement over dual core suggestions, how ever if the funds really aren't there then, kick that ye old Phenom I into touch and buy as you said Athlon II or Phenom II x2 550 (just bought one of these)

I think im gonna get the athlon II x2 250. Its an AM3 cpu so, would I need to update the bios before it would work? How would I do this if I dont have any other cpu's that are compatible with the board.

Phenom II 550 have higher default clock speeds, and are more powerful clock for clock, but again its upto you. I bought the 550 over the athlon II :)

You would either need a AM2+ CPU or send off the BIOS chip, I very much doubt the BIOS is that far outta date, they're very good at updating :)

Its an extra tenner, and its not tooooooo much stronger so I don't want to go over my 400 quid mark. Original budget was 350 lolol :) hehe
The mobo is an Asus, I hope they already updated the bios, but if they haven't and I tried to boot it with an Am3 cpu in what would happen?

Hmm, I would imagine it wouldn't post, otherwise people would have said to me, you'll need a AM2+ CPU, this a guess :)

At newegg it is shipped with bios version 1009, and I need version 0804 to work with Am3 cpu's. Hope aria has a new stock. I have a sempron, maybe that would work.

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+AM2%2B+%28AMD%29/Asus+M3N78-VM+NV+GF+8200+Socket+AM2%2B+Motherboard+?productId =34977

http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=161&l3=0&l4=0&model=2268&modelmenu=1

nevermind, my sempron is socket 754, wont work :(

Will

Stop worrying, it will work :) it supports AM3, saying that it doesn't actually say that on Arias website.

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+AM2%2B+%28AMD%29/Asrock+motherboard+A770DE+AMD+AM3+DDR2+ATX%2F+AM3+ Ready+?productId=36082

You don't fancy that board? That defiantly should support you CPU :)

busman3000
06-07-09, 22:04
Maybe its just me then.
I checked the asus website and they don't list the Mobo as am3 compatible though..

I think I'll get the one you showed me then. I was thinking about getting one with onboard VGA, but the cpu working is most important to me.

Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate all the help.

I would go with the cheaper board, as that according also to aria supports AM3 CPUs!

Yeah. But its just so important that the CPU will work with it, I'm gonna get it. Both of my current computers are socket 754 :o

You'll be very impressed with the Athlon II, AMD have worked a treat on these new 45nm CPUs :) remember...

WE WANT BENCHIES :D

I'll do it all once I get it up and running. I been interested in computers since I was real small, but this is the first rig I've actually put together myself (props to all you guys on these forums for your help, and google :D ). I'd have liked to do a build earlier on, but my dad mainly used to pick then.

Btw I'm gonna be using the windows 7 RC ^_^

Will

I used Windows 7 RC aswell, remember to pre-order it :) it'll be ALOT cheaper!

This Phenom II X3 system was my first build aswell :)
