I've used Windows, Mac OS, KDE, XFCE and Gnome. They're all good, all pretty nice to use, all easy to learn the GUI, but the Linux-based onces work better if you learn how to use the Terminal, which I haven't yet. Still trying though - I didn't learn Windows in a day.

I'm happy to use any OS under the sun really, as long as it runs my hardware and software. And if it doesn't, there's usually a free alternative available on the web.

Currently, my primary OS is Windows Vista, but only because I installed Windows 7 RC on a separate hard drive to avoid any problems, and said hard drive is only 120GB, so I can't exactly install much on it. The drive running Vista is 640GB. Despite what people say, I've never had any problems with Vista really. It's a bit hit and miss - you either don't get any problems at all, or you get the whole kerfuffle. The only problem I've had with it i that it won't run one of my favourite games of all time: Red Faction. That's it.

But like I said, even if I have to use an emulator, I don't care what OS I use as long as I can run my hardware and software with it.

Currently though, I'd vote Windows 7, just because it's more familiar and because it runs all my hardware and software. Except Red Faction. Not even in Windows XP Mode. Although I've probably made progress, because RF no longer complains about me having too much RAM to run the game. It just start after I click "Play" in the splash screen.

Any reason why I would want Professional over Home?

Vista for me.

For me there was never anything wrong with it, apart from the driver support for 64bit.

I just like the look of XP Mode, which is included in Professional but not Home Premium. But I've already adapted to Vista so don't really need it anymore. All my software apart from Red FAction already works. Depends if you want XP Mode or not really. The other extras in Pro don't seem worth it. Oh, and Pro supports more RAM.

I have to admit a lot of people are Raving about Windows 7 (i.e. this is what Vista SHOULD have been like in the 1st place).

I want to reinstall W7 RC. I also want to try installing XP again, because I want to play Red Faction again! The lastt ime I installed XP though, it failed. The installer triggered a blue screen. I think it's related to the fact I'm using a 64-bit CPU, but not sure.

Can't put either on at the moment though, because:

windows XP,
until i've had final release W7 on pc for a few months, xp still wins for not taking you round the block for doig simple things.

I mean Vista control panel how many uneeded clicks!

Col
02-09-09, 16:55
I personally thought the Vista control panel was better than XP's one. In XP I had to set it back to Classic View, but in Vista I have it in Category view.

alexnifty
02-09-09, 17:04
I really don't like category view and in W7 I really don't like the list view because it sorts them alphabetically crossways. Whereas my mind looks vertically.

Still peeve's me that they changed add/remove programs. I can never remember what it is called and spend ages every time looking for it!

coiler
02-09-09, 17:06
xp control panel just worked, it was intuitive, and logical.

if W7 is an exact copy of VIsta control panel I will not be impressed.

It's not the same, but it is still a step down from XP. I probably haven't looked closely enough at it's settings to get it how I like.

W7 is still an XP beater in my opinion though. Especially if 64-bit and SSD (trim command support) is where you're headed.

mrlars
02-09-09, 17:55
Windows 7 is by far the best of that lot. The difference between Vista and Windows 7 is like the difference between Windows 2000 and XP, XP had all the little issues of Windows 2000 ironed out.

Col
02-09-09, 18:23
Alright, this topic has got me beat. Windows 7 will be ordered as soon as I have the funds to complete the following order:
- Windows 7 (not sure what edition yet)
- AMD AM3 955 3.2GHz CPU
- A new hard drive to replace the two that I'll be getting rid of

I also need to work out what I'm going to do here. The new hard drive will definitely be SATA II, but all my SATA ports are taken. Might have to go back to my old IDE DVD drives.

Had it at 3.8 using the 8x multiplier. I prefer to try and keep a lower multi and up the FSB instead. Bandwidths and all that... :p

Running it at the maximum overclock seems unneccesary at the moment anyway, my computer struggles with no games so why up the leccy bill for no reason?

I have to agree, it took me a while to get used to the new task bar. It has slowly grown on me, and after a few weeks I'm finally starting to get used to it.

The most useless feature I have found so far is Aero Shake, has anyone actually found a use for it?

I used it once, thought "that's nice" and never used it again.

Used the side by side windows thing where you drag it to the edge of the screen once or twice.

I don't like how the windows expand when they touch the side of the screen. If I want it stretched, I'll stretch it, thank you very much. It's annoying when you want a window on teh edge of the screen to stay the same size as it is.

It also took me a while to get used to the new taskbar in 7, but once I did, I still went back to Classic view, with labels and small icons.

I've also not found Aero Shake useful. Or HomeGroup. Or Devices and Printers. Now I understand Devices and Printers though. It took me a while. I thought it was a replacement for Device Manager but only showed a small selection of hardware. It actually only shows devies which are externally connected.

mrlars
04-09-09, 12:37
I can see how the expanding windows located next to screen edges could get annoying, but I'd still say there's more positive about these changes. It just feels more intuitive, but I guess like all changes in UI, it really comes down to user preferences.

Has anyone else found the updated resource manager useful? I find it to be much more informative than it's Vista predecessor.

I find that windows live messenger does not work too well with windows 7, even though they had WLM in mind when designed. Few things

1. When you get a message on XP/Vista it used to glow, it still glows but with the light blue taskbar effect it is quite hard to see.

2. As far as I am aware it does not pop up who has come up online on Windows 7, just dings.

3. You can't close it into the notification bar as you once could, it stays on the bottom which is annoying.

Other than that windows 7 is great

User-friendly? I don't know, not had any issues with 7 upto now. Most drivers install automatically though I would double check for updated drivers on manufacturer websites. Only issue I have is there is a game I play Shot-Online which isn't compatible with the 32bit windows 7, something with GameGuard installing drivers and 7 says no-no.

Wha...? Firefox checks for updates when you launch it. If there are any available, you get a windows with an install button and a list of al lthe addons which will be updated. You just click Update and it'll update then it'll carry on as normal.

When it's an actual browser update, it'll update when you launch it, where you get a progress bar on its own in the middle of the screen for a few secs and then it goes away and you're updated.

What windows?
