Well I'm stuck with these two processors at the moment. Which one would be better for gaming and which for video encoding/image editing and which would be better overall for both?

Thanks. Oh and they can both use DDR2 right? :)
I think I'd go for the tri core. Imo, you wouldnt notice a HUGE difference between 2.4 and 2.8Ghz in games if the game isnt multi core aware, or only uses 2 cores. However, you will notice a good increase in performance in encoding/editing etc if the programs can use all cores with the tri core cpu.
And, just on a side note - I think it was Wonderlust who linked to an article that showed that games were getting the best FPS on a tri core, over dual or even quad cores. I'd take it with a little pinch of salt, as I dont think it would neccesarily apply to every game under the sun, but it definitely shows that the tri cores perform well in games too :)
But wait for some other opinions too :)
Yeah i would get the Triple core aswell.
2.4ghz is good enough for games and you have the extra core for your encoding.
Both are the black edition so you can change the multiplier and get some more .ghz.
Adding to it the Phenom II Dualcores are also worth a look.

I've read about an AMD overdrive tool, I suppose that makes it easier to overclock?
Im going to the X3, thanks for your help guys. If I'm lucky the fourth core might be disabled :D Then I gotta figure out how to unlock it lol.
X3 would be my choice too :) :thumbsup:
triple core gets my vote. But in games I don't think you'll see much difference, it will be the GPU which matters most here.
All 3 of my cores are used in all my games (well the newish games) anyway. So tri-cores get my vote for gaming :thumbsup:
You cannot unlock the 4th core on the x3 8750 BE. It is a phenom not a phenom II.
Its very rare to be able to unlock the 4th core on a PII X3 aswell, I've seen it done about 5 times excluding Toms hardware :p

No worries, I'll be happy with three cores.
Neither in my opinion. If you can stretch to around £70 and are willing to shop elsewhere, get the Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition. It's been out since early June, performs similar to the E8400, is priced considerably less and actually people have been having a reasonable amount of luck at unlocking them to quad cores. Why Aria don't stock these wonders, I don't know!
Just ordered one :thumbsup::lol:
